A SWEETHEART AT THIRTY Thm Story of a Woman' Transformation BY MARION RUBINCAM
TIMID ADVENTURES Chapter 27 My eyes saw only the confusion of buildings and people, but Violet's held the reflection of Bud"s figure as it disappeared through a subway entrance. "He said to take the Third Avenue Elevated, towhere was it?" I asked Vi. She looked at the slip of paper in Iter hand. It had the address of the place we were to go to first a rooming house far up in the Bronx, We did not know then whether that was even part of the city or not. Miss Manx had written to the Y. W. C. A. for it, snd this place they had assured us was the cheapest pood place on their list and that it had been investigated and v.as quite all right for us. "Can I help you?" We both turned at the voice. A kindly middle-aged woman stood before us, looking &t us rmilingly; I thought' it was a friendly smile, and I still think it was, though thpre must have been amusement with W too. "How do we get there?" I held out the paper to her. And she gave us long directions urtil we felt sure how we were to go. The ride was, of course, an amazing thing. But then, we were already becoming used to amazements. We had reen massed houses, millions of them apparently, and miles of roofs from the window of the train. The ride on the elevated railroad was only a continuation of this. Eventually we found the place, a four-story house set in the center of a Mock, some little distance from the elevated station. At each corner stood a tall apartment, house, and from almost every window protruded either a mattress or a woman's head. The streets were full of people. That was the hardest thing to get used to the eternal swarms of people, nil of them strange. Where we came from, vre knew every soul for miles about. Not only that, we knew all our neighbors horses we even recognized the- characteristic hoof-beats of certain teams as they drove by! "There goes the doctor," or.e of us would say, as a certain heavy plodding hoof-heat was heard. Or, "There goes Mr. Murray," when a smart little taptnpping came to our ears, and we knew Murray's brown pony was driving the laniily in town again. But here Certainly Violet and I were lost souls in a big city! We rang the bell and finally we were admitted by a middle-asted woman with an eternally tired expression of face. "Yes, I'm Mrs. Tupper," she told us, taking the slip of paper we held out. ' So the Y. W. sent you here! Well, they didn't let me know. They usually no. But 1 guefs its all right. 1 re a loom anyway. It's not much, but it's large enough for you both." She talked in oueer, short sentences, with pauses between each sentence as though the effort to let out the few words almost exhausted her. "We don't mind what sort of room, if it's clean," I ventured. It seemed the proper thing to say Esther had cautioned me on this point. Mrs. Tupper turned a tired eye on me. I felt she would have been resentful of this remark, had she not been so near exhaustion. "All my rooms are clean. The Y. W. usually sends me more folks. This room was $t.f0. But it's $3 now. For two people. The rent's goin' up. So I l.ave to raise my prices." She went ahead of us up the stairs Preently, she opened a door and we found ourselves in a large room, with n high ceiling, and a double bed of v. hite enamel. There was one window, tall and thin, that opened towards the back, and gave us a narrow view of some yards. There was a hihlv varnished oak bureau, a wash stand, with a towel tacked against the wall lehind it, a small square table with lfes that seemed to meet in a point Miller's AntiattptSe Oil. directly under the table's top And there were two chairs. "It's a nice room," Mrs. Tupper defended it against our silence. "I just pui in my best curtains. They was ray best. But after I rented the parlor I brought one pair of them here. The ladies in the parlor had their own." "But if a if a young gentleman comes to see to see us, where shall I bring him?" Violet asked, looking in alarm from the lace curtains to the lady. "You can bring him here, I suppose," Mrs. Tupper answered. "I got to rent out my parlor. I got to make all my rooms pay. ' I rent only to nice people. Nice people are nice anywhere. That's what I say. So you can bring your gentleman friend to your room. Besides, your mother's with you. I never rent except to nice people. The rent's in advance." I paid her and she left. Violet waited till she was safely out. then she collapsed on the bed, her handkerchief to her mouth, almost convulsed with laughter. I turned from my contemplation of the dreary room to this girl who was always-like something alight, I smiled a little too. "Oh, Aunt Enid, isn't it a dreadful place! But isn't she funny?" The girl gasped. "Nice people are nice anywhere!" she mimicked. "Oh dear! Well, I'm glad she thinks we're nice." She got up, her cheeks still pink from her laughing. We stood and looked carefully at our new room, taking in all its details. Here we were, at last! And now, what adventures would we have, timid souls that we were? Tomorrow More Timid Adventures. Heart Problems J v. Zj Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have been keeping company with a gentleman for .ten years. We think a great deal of each other. We are both over thirty years old. I do everything in my power to make him happy, and never tire of doing favors for him and never consider myself first. I am told by my family I am not a bit selfish. I have opportunities to go with other gentlemen, but refrain from doing so. as I treat him in all ways as I want bim to treat me. And, considering that he is a man, I will say he does very nicely most of the time, but there is one fault he has that hurts me deeply. Where he is employed there are several girls, and he has a car. After closing hours he very often takes one of the girls home, and after doing so several times he will tell me abou it. Then later on he will start with a new one. I feel that he should not do that. It is only natural I would be jealous. When I hear those tales I feel that I cannot refrain from watching him and when I catch him in the act, tell him j how mean I consider him and have nothing more to do with him. Since knowing this I am almost tempted to go with a man who has a very fine car, and is quite anxious to take me out. You can see by his actions he will cause me to do things that may sever our love for each other. I am very strong in my likes and dislikes and being old enough, have good sense. I am also old enough to be very jealous. Kven though we have gone together so long, he does not seem to know just what is due me and what not, and when I take him to task regarding girls whom he takes home, he acts and talk's as though I were in the wrong. He says he must be nice to NIGHT AND DAY On Face and Neck. Sleep Impossible.CuticuraHeals. "My face and neck broke out with little oimples which festered and iT-a. became larger. them all. That is true, but I think he goe3 too far and my nature will not endure it. Please tell me if I am right or wrong I stand ready to be shown when in error. DISTRESSED. You cannot be blamed for your jealousy, because it is evident that you love the man deeply. You should not show your feelings, however, and you should not even encourage unhappy thoughts. Reason it out and try to see that it is natural and a-courtesy for a man to invite another or others to ride with him when he - returns from work. It is certainly preferable in the case of "others." You have not mentioned an engage ment, jr you are not engaged, you" nave no right to object to the atten tions he pays other girls. Your onlyJ means ot convincing him that he should not go with other girls would be to go with the other man. At no time say that you object because he will think that you feel a claim on him. A man loves his independence and prefers to do as he sees fit. If some woman tries to alter his ideas he is not apt to tie himself to her in marriage. The man ought to marry you since he has gone with you so long and apparently cares for you more than anyone else. It seems to me you have waited long enough and should go with other men too, since the one you love does not seem to think seriously of marriage. STEVEDORES STRIKE; STOP LISBON TRAFFIC (By Associated Press) LISBON, Nov. 17. Traffic at this port has been almost paralyzed by a strike of the longshoremen and stevedores and by workers on the state railways. Meantime the city has beeu given an evil appearance by a strike of garbage-wagon drivers and street cleaners. Several foreign vessels were compelled to leave the harbor without discharging their cargoes of provisions, greatly needed in this poorly rationed country, because or the harbor strike. Labor troubles spread also to the crews of merchant ships and some officers joined with the men in quit ting wort on board the steamers. Pieces of machinery were removed from boats for transporting passengers and provisions across the Tagus river and the boilers of some of the smaller craft were filled with salt water so that when the government sent naval forces to operate them, the boilers would not make steam. As a result of the state railway strike Lisbon was threatened with a dearth of provisions. The streets were cluttered wih ill-smelling dirt heaps and filth, owing to the strike of the cleaners. As usual, when strikes occur here, reports were spread that they were due to a bolshevist plot emenating fmm Mni-zmn- rr:j..ii-. ,i wrui i.iuuvun. uuiimu; nie government issued a note stating that they

Curling Hair This Way Preserves Its Beauty That dull, dead appearance cf the hair no longer troubles the woman who has adopted the silmerine method of keeping her tresses in curl. The result is very different from that produced by the drying, devitalizing waving iron. The hair appears more naturally wavy and curly, and the application is really beneficial to the life and growth of the hair. Any druggist,. of course, can supply the liquid silmerine. A small quantity should be put on just before doing up the hair, using for the purpose a clean tooth brush, drawing this down the full length of the hair from root to tip. The effect is delightfully surprising, and there is no discoloration, no stickiness, greasiness, nor any other unpleasant-accompaniment. The hair is quite manageable, no matter how it is fashioned.1 Advertisement. 3 1 cup strong coffee 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons Royal Baking Powder H teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons mixed spices Cream shortening and sugar until light; add well beaten yolks of eggs; add coffee slowly; add half of flour sifted with baking powder, salt and spices; mix and add well beaten whites of eggs; add remainder of flour and mix lightly.
