WESTERN RAILROAD SALE MARKS CLOSE OF TUMULTOUS CASE

(By Associated Press) DENVER, Colo., Nov. 12 Sale of the -Denver and Rio Grande railroad to the highest bidder by" order of the United States circuit court of appeals marks the close of a tumultous chapter in the history of the road founded by General William J. Palmer in 1871. "Millions of dollars a year in wages were paid annually in the prosperous period of the road's history and other millions were-' used in" numerous efforts of various'. financial interests to

Jay Gould interests caused the retirement of General Palmer from the road in 18S3, it was the object of financial campaigns of rival interests until the receivership caused by default qf the road in payment of Western Pacific railroad bonds in 1918, bond payments having been guaranteed by the Denver & Rio Grande. Many Suits The bond Issue was for $50,000,000 and when the Equitable Trust company of Ntew York brought suit and obtained Judgment in 1918, this had been reduced to a little more than $36,000,000 the amount of the judgment. On January 28. of that year Edward L. Brown, president of the road, and Alexander R. Baldwin, vice-president of the Western Pacific, were named receivers by Judge Walter Lt Sanborn, of the United States circuit court of appeals. - A month later Brown was named sole receiver to comply with regulations of the United States railroad administration during the war. He was delegated agent of the administration. Hearings were held before a United States master in chancery and on September 25, 1920, an order was signed by Judge Sanborn for the sale of the road, over fhe protest of a stockholders' committee who asked postponement for a month. The road was advertised for eale for 30 days and Novt mber 20 set as the date of sale. The road was built originally as part of Palmer's dream of a line running from Denver to El Paso. Development of the mining enterprises in the western part of the state resulted in a change in the direction of the road's development and extension of branch lines westward into the mining communities became a part of the contest between the road and the Union Pacific for control of the Rocky mountain territory, the latter road already having an advantage in the northern Rocky mountin region. Among the prominent railroad men connected with the road in various capacities were George Gould. Benjamin F. Bush and H. U. Mudge.

Colorado Farming Area Increases 1 43 Per Cent DENVER. Col.. Nov. 12. Cultivated area in Colorado has increased 143.5 per rent in the past decade, according lo statistics compiled by the sta'e immigration department. County assessors' reports show approximately 2,000,000 acres were under

irrigation in the state this year, out of a total cultivated area of approximately 5,600.000 acres. United States Leads In Chilean Commerce (By Associated Press?) SANTIAGO, Nov. 12 The United States continued far in the lead of other nations in commerce with Chile in 1919, supplying nearly half of Chiles total imports of $146,483,331. This is shown by the anual report of the superintendent of customs. Imports from North America amounted to $70,026,914 against $74,259,940, for 1918. Great Britain was second with $28,423,274. Total Chilean exports during 1919, decreased more than 50 per cent as compared with 1918. This was due chiefly, it is said, to the reduced sales of nitrate, the predominant product
