The Diary of an Engaged Girl By Phyl Phillips

THE SEQUEL. But that isn't the half of it. Nay not by a jug full. The climax came in the evening and thusly: Mother and I dined at our hotel and then we went out for a little walk in the Borghese Gardens. It was a heavenly moonlight night and there was a lilt in my heart and a streak of golden Joy somewhere in my throat, just for the sheer Joy of living, of being young and happy and in Rome on such a night. Mother was most loquacious, and bent on telling me how romantic my daddy had been as a young man, while she, well, she had always kept her head, it would seem from her accounts. She sort of condescended to lean her loveliness near to his ardent heart. I should have known that without her telling me, for no woman can be such an absorbed and excellent housekeeper and executive quantity who has deep sentiments," or is romantic. No, the twp do not mix at all. And little Lindsey is her daddy's daughter. It's frightful to think of all he missed if mother was so unresponsive and all that. Still dad always looks as if he, too, had seen the land beyond the moon. Maybe he is like me and has also philandered in his time? Who knows? We sat for an hour under the cypress trees and the scene of the night crept and seeped into every bit of me in a maddening way. Once I thought ihat I saw a shadowy form flit by through the trees. My thought flew to Ettore. Once back at the hotel I sat dutifully with mother for a few minutes and then went up to my own room. It was such a gorgeous night that my room was flooded with moonlight and I decided against turning on the light and sat down in a big arm chair to stretch myself and dream. An them now shall I tell it I heard a heavenly sweet tenor voice somewhere in the street and just below my window raised in. The voice was singing a Neapolitan love song "Ttose Rosse" one pregnant with love and sentiment and passion. I started up in joy at the beauty of the serenade and wondered who on earth of all the lovers of the earth could be down there singing to his love. And then T knew, for I stole to the window softly, so as not to break the spell, and drawing my silk wrap round me a bit tighter, I leaned out of the window. Clear, by the light of the moon. I saw my' Ettore. His love song I knew was meant for me! He stopped ns soon as he had finished the second verse and raised his

arms to me. supplicatingly. There I

whs only one thing to do, and I did it. I blew him a dozen kisses. Then, with a motion cf his arm and hand, he mo

tioned for me to come down and follow him. Did I hesitate? Not for long, for I knew that mother must be settled by this time and that I was being offered the key to the Garden of Paradise. And that's all there was to it, except that I ran down and out and into my adorer's arms, so to speak, and then palpitating at my own daring, I let him lead me back into the Borghese Gardens to a secluded spot. We 6at down amd listened to the thumping of our own wild hearts before we could even say each others names. That's Italian love and, oh, there is really so much more to it and everything, but I feel quite dazed at my own self for ever thinking of any other man or country. (To be continued.)

Heart Problems J

i Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have been married a little over a year. We are still very much in love. My husband never leaves me nights and is truly wonderful to me in every other way. That alone should make me happy, fut it doesn't, for it is all spoiled by one

little thing. He always looks at girls too long, one's that pass him on the streeL I have noticed it a lot when we are out together. You have Ao idea how badly it makes me feel. I don't stare at good-looking men, and don't see why he should at girls. I'll display a little conceit now and say that it Isn't because I am unattractive and don't keep myself in a "good-to-look-at" condition. I wonder how I must take it to feel better abou' it? What could remedv it JEALOUS WIFE. The day may come when you will look back on this period of your His as a happy one without anything to mar or jar. The fact that your husband looks at girls "too long" is too trifling to be noticed. Don't hunt for trouble,, because if you do, you will find it Appreciate him for his good points and make up your mind he wouldn't be human if he did everything just right. Doubtless you annoy him in various ways, but he cares too much for you to notice them. Dear Mrs. Thompson: We are two girl chums who are always together We have one girl friend who is jealous of us every time we have anything

The girl acta the way she does because she is young and does not know how to govern her feelings. Do not notice her moods in the least, and do not blame her for the queer things she does. In a year you will notice a change because she will have passed through the awkward stage between girlhood and young womanhood.

A CLEANSING AGENT

The troubles of the girl who has blackheads are manifold. If she washes her face with hot water and soap the skla is apt to come out drawn and shiny with every black pore showing. If she uses a cleansing cream it seems only to Increase the oil in a skin already too full of it So whether she tries to dry her skin or to nourish it, the result is sure to look bad. As it is impossible to get rid of blackheads quickly, the best counsel that can be given is that of patience. But the quickest way to get rid of the obnoxious little blackheads is to use both a drying agent and an oil. The best drying agent is a Special Cleansing Powder. The formula has been given before. . It is made by combining: Wheat or cornstarch, 2 ounces . Powdered borax, l ounce Almond meal, l ounce This is used with soap, or preferably instead of soap. First wash the skin, holding cloths wrung from hot water over the face until the pores are open then dip the moist fingertips into this powder and rub it thoroughly into the pores. Moisten the fingers, take some more powder and repeat, as the skin absorbs this very readily. Rinse with hot water. You will find that the dry powder has absorbed the top of each blackhead so It shows much less plainly As the powder is drying, rub a little cold cream into the face, and wipe off whatever remains on the surface of the skin. If possible, finish by rubbing

with ice, which is one oi me ok&i. astringents known. A. M. If the hair does not tangle by being allowed to hang loosely over the night, that way is much better than braiding, as the scalp has a chance to ventilate. If you must resort to braiding it over night, do it in about tour brais and keep them very loose. This can be done by dividing the head into four parts, somewhat of a square, so that two braids are at the top of the head and two at the lower part, then throw all of them over the pillow, so the air can get at the scalp while you sleep. If you sleep without a pillow, as so many people do now, so much the better for your hair. You may wear any shade in pink, also yellow, especially the shades that run toward burnt orange. All the dark colors you can use in serviceable clothing. , DISCONSOLATE I have answered both of your former letters; as there was no request to halve them mailed to you, the letters went into the column. You should consult a good doctor about your nerves; you must be in need of a thorough building up. You can help yourself also with your will. Try this method, when you feel these spells coming: Ward them off by taking very slowly a deep breath, hold it as long as comfortable, then allow it to escape as softly as if it were velvet. Repeat this a number of times, focusing your mind on this exercise and forget all about the trembling. The fact that you are worse when you are with people, or if they are looking at you, shows that you unconsciously let go
