INDIANAPOLIS FULL OF JOBLESS WORKERS; 130,000 IS ESTIMATE T (By Associated Prs INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 1. Thirty thousand skilled and unskilled workers re outof employment In Indianapolis, with corn husking the. only opportunity for work, according to Fred Kleinsmith, director of the staU? employment service, operating labor agencies in Evansvllle. Fort Wayne. Hammond, Lafayette. Muurie and Terre Haute, labor leaders connec ted with the Indianapolis -Central Iabor Union and the Indiana State Federation of lAbor, however.' estimate the unemployed in this rity to number 20.000. Neither the slate employment service or the labor organizations has any figures showing the. relative labor market and chances of employment, except that Mr. Klelnsmith says ho can only refer job-seekers to the farmer for corn husking. Ho also says the Indianapolis situation is typical of the slate, but lho labor leaders believe that the condition here Is worse than In other Indiana cities. .The state employment service works In 1 ro-operat ion with the cities, agencies : being . established where the municipality share equally with the state the expenses of conducting the office. "Mayor .Tewett, of Indianapolis," said Mr. Kletusmith. "declined last March to recommend city expenditures for an agency, pointing out. that there were 250 opportunities of employment for each applicant for work. That was true then, but now there Is no opportunity and unlimited help awaiting a job." Lay Off Thousands. Indianapolis factories, almost without exception, have laid off thousands of workers during the last; month, according to Mr. Kleinsmith, who explains that most of them are only maintaining the nucleus of an operating force. The automobilo factories, he says, have made the largest cuts, but there also have been reductions in "the railroad shop and in the meat packing establishments. Lack of orders is said by manufacturers to have brought on the 'idleness, but they decline to estimate the unemployment or to state specific reductions. Labor leaders, however, regard the reduction of working forces as an effort to reduce wages. i Building activities throughout the
state, Including Indianapolis, continue gqod. with practically no skilled workers in the building trades being .idle. Their work, however, is said to be largely the finishing up of projects already under way, which will be completed before the new year and unless other lines of industry pick up there then will be further additions to the army of unemployed. ABOLISH HIGH FRATERNITIES ST. LOUIS, Mo., Nov. 1. The board of education here has launched a fight against fraternities and sororities in the high schools, and has issued an
ultimatum to the pupils declaring
membership will be cause for immediate suspension. "Secret organizations in the high schools are undemocratic
and undesirable and injurious to the free and wholesome life of the schools," the board declares.
