SEVERAL VETERANS READY FOR BASKET PRACTICE AJ HIGH

Basketball practice at the high pchool will begin next week, when those men who are not out tor football will begin to get in shape for the court season that will be opened with a game against Knightstown on December 17. Prospects for a fairly fast team to represent the Red and White are good, although the outfit will be rather light. Last year's team was light and handicapped by injuries to players, the squad was composed of mostly green material. The schedule arranged for the coming year seems to be one of the best ever arranged by the local school. Special interest is attracted to thQ game with Wingate high school here cn Feb. 18. Wingate has always been r.oted for the exceptionally fast net trams turned out. Last year the s chool was outlawed from the Indiana Athletic association but had a recordbreaking season. They won the TrlFtate Invitational tournament at Cincinnati and battled Crawfordsville In the finals of a national tournament in Chicago. This year they have been reinstated and will have their usual fast team. Several Veterans. This winter several men who have been on the squad before will turn out and make the team have a veteran appearance. Among the men who are expected to fight for regular berths on the fiv are Loehr, Reid, Ilarkins, Graft'is, Mittox, Rost, Brehm, Brown, Green, Loiimsn, Gaylor, Livingstone, Hyde, Davis, Sanford and Lovin. The schedule as announced by Mr. Cline Friday is as follows: Dec. 17 Knightstown at Richmond. Doc. 23 Shelbyeille at Shelbyville. Jan. 7 Muncie at Muncie. Jan. 14 Connersville at Connersville. . RICH ARDS-C ALLAH AN GO SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 8 DAYTON. O, Oct. 3D. "Hlocklc" Richard?, the Jack Dempsey of the light-weights, local favorite, is training laithfully for his 12-ronml bout with Krankie Callahan of Columbus, Tom Jones' championship aspirant, scheduled for the night ot Nov. 8, 1920. The Miami A. C. have arranged to Ftage 1 his show in the Lakeside Park dancing hall, which can hold a crowd of f.,000, but according to the advance sale of tickets, will ie packed to capacity. It will be recalled that about six weeks ago, Callahan succeeded in gaining a referee's decision over lilockie in the ninth round of a hotly contested bout in Columbus, the referee claiming Blockie fouled the Columbus rcrappcr and 1here now exists much feeling between these two comers and their scrap to settle this grudge should be worth going miles to see. Much Callahan money is making its appearance, but is being gobbled up by local fans on even money bets. The "Blockie Richards-Frankie Callahan" bout will top an all star card in which Young Webb and Tommy Carter will battle 10 rounds for the city welterweight championship and Keefe Maley ( and Young Rodway will battle six rounds for the city middle-weight championship.

H E LLO - JC -XOU ACT UKE "YOU DON'T KNOW ME.: QUAKER BASKET MEN HOLD FIRST MEETING PROSPECTS ARE GOOD Quaker basket tossers had their first meeting of the year Friday after noon in the association room of Dundy hall. About 25 men turned out for the preliminary lining up and from a glance over the candidates, prospects for a fairly fast quintet. First practice will be held Monday afternoon in the gymnasium. Captain Fonzo Lawler will have charge of them until the close of the football season when they will be taken in charge by Coach Mowe. The opening game, of the Quaker schedule will be with Kalamazoo at the coliseum on Dec. 12. This is the same college that the Quakers meet in football next Saturday. The Michigan school is rated as high in basket circles as in football, being among the leader of the Wolverine state. Games with Wabash, Butler, Rose Poly and Franklin have been arranged tentatively. Notre Dame has promised the Quakers a place on their schedule and Coach Mowe is not closing up his other dates until the Catholic school is heard from. Efforts are being made to land Indiana and Purdue. If these are arranged the local college schedule will probably be the hardest ever undertaken. Wealth of Material. A wealth of veteran material is on jhand for the Quaker mentor. Cyril Pitts, floor guard, was the only man (lost by graduation last year. Lavvler and Hall, regular forwards, and Goar, substitute, are back in school, as is Carey, center and Johnson, back guard. Several men who are out for football look good for the basket court also. Beck, who has been making a name for himself in the backfield of the Quaker football team, will make a strong fight for the floor guard position. Russell Hadley, a sophomore who looked sure of a place last year but was put out for the season by an injury before the first same, will be very likely to land a regular place on the squad. Several freshmen have turned up who have good high school reputations. Chew, of Spiceland, Girton, of Camden, O., and Wenban, of Cleveland, all will scrap for positions. Games Wanted NEW MADISON CHALLENGES ALL. New Madison's basketball team ha-, issued a challenge to any independent team in this vicinity. Special mention is made of Richmond Y. M. C. A., Fountain City, Hagerstown, Winchester, Economy, Centerville and Connersville. Teams wishing dates write E. L. Thomas, New Madison, Ohio. Special space on the sport page of the Palladium will be given to publish notices of "games wanted" by basketball teams. Managers will know where to look for games if they have an open date. Challenges also will come under this heading. Managers desiring to have their notices published, phone or send them to the sport editor before 11 a. m. of the day to be published. Crushing Maroons Meet Warriors From Ohio State (By Associated Press.) CHICAGO, Oct. 30. For the first football contest between Oho State and Chicago University, the weather man presented ideal football weather today. Approximately 2,000 Columbus students accompanied their team here. Before the game Ohio was a strong favorite, but neither foam was in perfect condition. Haniseh and Williams, the rival fullbacks, were both out of condition, and neither expected to take part. The Maroons have worked all week to perfect a defense to stop the end runs and off tackle drives of Pete Stinecomb, fleet Buckeye runner, and to Harry Workman, the brilliant sophomore quarter back, who has been throwing forward passes from thirty to fifty yards all season. The Maroons had a little advantage in weight, for from tackle to tackle, Stagg's line averaged 207 pounds. Sundav mornine in uniformSand prepared for a scrimmage squad will be taken before the workout is started. Plans are to have the game played at Reid field beginning immediately after the parade. The members of the team who were injured in the Anderson and previous games will virtually all be in condition for the closing game of the season. The Greenwood post team of Indianapolis, is a strong eleven and has succeeded in rolling up some big scores. They will come prepared to put up a scrap against, the local eleven, surpassing anything tney have done this year. Several workonts will be held during the next 10 days by the local post team and as a result they hope to put a team on the field that will present a stone-wall defense, and a ripping offense strong enough to bring victory. i Indiana to Meet Rival At Indianapolis Saturday INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 30.
