TheDiary of an Engaged Girl
By Phyllis Phillips .
T am still shocked to think that my 71 lover is an honest o goodness count. And just to think of the way I laughed at him on the train and hew mother called him down, and. then out! Dear, oh, dear, we are certainly careless about titles, we Americans! I feel like giggling at the thought of it all. And he no doubt used to bowing and scraping wherever he goes. Well, one thing in the favor of our raw method is that It is at least original. I wonder how Ettore felt when mother told him to depart? I have decided to continue to Ignore his high and mighty state and treat him just as I would Any of the boys at home. If he loves, me as he says he does, then nothing that I can say or do can possibly put him off. My lover writes also that if only I can understand the heart of an Italian I will know that it is filled with mad love and ardour, when It roally loves a woman. He does write the grandest love letter ever. I have just written my reply. I told Ettore if he could manage to see me some time this evening, or get near me by hook or crook, I'd be able to let him know whether I should have a chance to slip out and away with him to
morrow. Now -of course the poor boy will have no (fttance in the world of getting anywhere within eye or earshot of me, so: our fate is on the knees of the gods and, fortunately for the young and romantic, they are more often kind than otherwise. - I wonder If I am handling Ettore rightly. I wonder if I can handle myself properly in a case like this? I shouldn't wonder if it came very hard to he all that a lady should be at all times. However, that firm little head of mine will always see me through, 1 think. And, anyhow, it's high time that I had a chance to steer myself through my own situations, sans mother. I
feel capable of understanding and of
conducting myself properly under all
circumstances and alone. Imagine anyone in this age and era having to
sigh for such a thing as Freedom! Freedom! Freedom that is every human being's birthright. Away with mothers and trouble hunters and everything disagreeable that would balk the young. In an hour we are to drive through
the Borghese Gardens and then go to
the Piazza Colonna (where fashion
meets) for an ice and coffee. I shall
put on a black dress it'll show up my hair and skin so well, and then let mother watch out, for I am on the eve of upsetting all her discipline and doing as I choose for onc on this trip. She can do nothing but call in the fire department, for dad and the rest of them are far away. And even the fire department, here in Italy, I feel sure would be on the side of the beautiful blond heroine, no matter what she had done nor what her irate mother had to say! Now for the work of adorning my person. 'Ware, oh Romans! (To be continued.)

Aeoliai
At Radical Reductions
ATURDAY Morning at Weisbrod's there will be offered
for Special Sale two popular models of the olianVocalion. These two instruments at their regular prices have had a large sale. Musically, and in appearance, they have offered unequaled values; and at Special Prices they present a most unusual opportunity to secure a phonograph of the highest excellence at a modest price and on terms so reasonable that almost anyone can afford to own one. The reason, and the only reason, for this reduction is that in bringing out the 1 92 1 models a slight change in the case designs was made in these styles.
