The Diary of an Engaged Girl By Phyllis PhflHps
ri Here Is the note: ii "Dear adored one I tremble to believe that not again we can meet for I have eeen your mother and she does not seem to love Ettore at all. I must see you m'amie, so be kind and grac- - Ions as love itself and write to your maddest and humblest adorer at once. I live only to please you, to hear your voice in my ears, and feel once more the breath of your sweet Hps upon my cheek." There was more than this, but after all it's a letter and must not be quoted, but I know that I am really entangled, which is a frightening what though a glorious thought. I have read and re-read his letter until I know it by heart. Can't blame me either for I have never received one like it In my whole life before. This is life, real life. This is what I have dreamed about ever since I was a wee kiddie. And, oh, I feel so wildly excited and sort of dizzily happy. I feel as though the very earth were different, somehow, as though I had a new pair of eyes that see only beauty and sunshine and love. And as though my feet and limbs were made of vapor, so light do they feel. I can't imagine what has come over me at all. Mother, of course, sat and lectured me for a full half hour. I was disappointed to think that she could do so, on this, our very first day in Rome. She certainly is not following the old adage "When you're in Rome, do as the Romans," for these languorous people don't seem to peck at each other at all. Of course they have hot tempers, but they don't "nag". I let mother run on to her heart's content, bless her, for I had a view of the white roofs and tall cypress trees just beyond the old city wall and far into the Bourghese Gardens. The sky seemed to quicken the whole city with its vivid blue and, anyhow, so much sunlight as there is here puts sunshine into one's heart I give
mother one more day to succumb to It. Then there was another reason. I have discovered that when I remain perfectly 6ilent in the face of all arguments or curtain lectures they blow over so much more quickly. This rebuttle and playing for time is old stuff and very bad form. I have suffered too much from same not to know it. Hence -my quiet demeanor whenever scolded. , Nothing matters Just now but the thing at hand, and the strange new fire and lightness that is In my soul and body. I don't think I even heard
the first ten words of mother's leoture, for I was thinking of the caress of Ettore's arm and the fire that I had seen In two black eyes at midnight. I kissed my little mummy at last. That mollified her and she finally departed, leaving me to my peace again. Three minutes after she had left there came a discreet . knock at the doOr and a page handed me this note with the remark that the count begged me to give an immediate answer, as he would wait below until it came. My hat! I feel like the heroine in some fairy tale. (To be continued.)
Heart Problems j
Dear Mrs. Thompson: My problem looks like an easy one and doubtless it would be for those not so particular. I am a stranger in town, having only been here ten weeks, but I find it quite impossible to make the acquaintance of any of the young ladies of this city. Possibly you can help me through your column by telling me where I can go or how I can meet some of the better class of young people. A STRANGER. The problem of the "stranger in town" has not been adequately solved. It seems to me the greatest pity of this
busy age is that we are all too selfcentered to notice a stranger. The old custom of speaking to all who passed on the highway was a splendid thing. It created fellowship and' friendliness. My advice to you is to begin by making men friends. - Pick out the men around you that you would like to know,- and talk to them. When you are better acquainted with them you can say that you know no girls and would appreciate an introduction to some of the girls. It sounds well to advise you to go to church to meet young people. I realize, r however, that the churches need more young people. While some are well supplied, others are sending out a constant call since- their congregations are composed of middle-aged and gray-haired people. Dear Mrs. Thompson I have two boy friends. I love one, but the other I do not care for. Mother doesn't want me to go with both the boys. She told me to quit one or the other. I think a young girl of nineteen should go with different ones and not. stick to one fellow. My parent3 wish for me to pro with their choice. - Of course they like the other boy too, but I don't want to go with the one they picked out. . I just can't, bear him. I have told the other boy I didn't care to go with him. I ditched him and I never keep a date with him. Still he comes to the house. I get so disgusted with him. He asked me to marry him and I have only known him a few months. I just laughed at him. The other boy likes me and -1 like him. If you were in my place .what would you do? A GIRL WITH TWO LOVERS. You are too young to decide what man you are to marry. Since your parents want you to make a choice, however, choose the young man you

Japanese Language Teacher Would Revise Textbooks (By Associated Press.) . TOKIO, Oct. 28. The principal of the Japanese Language -School at Seattle, Torataro Takahata, has returned here to negotiate with the educational authorities for a revision of the Japanese textbooks used in teaching Japanese children in Japanese schools in the United States. Takahata said he had 270 pupils in his Seattle school and that all of them were at the . same time pupils in American public schools. He added: "To put it in a plain language, Japanese texlooks used for the Japanese children at home, would be, when used for Japanese children abroad, particularly' in the United States, highly calculated to sow the seeds of misapprension concerning the AmericanJapanese relations in the tender minds. "With the object, therefore, of mak-
