WASHINGTON Movie directors are great believer? In atmosphere. Some of them insist that emotional scenes cannot be filmed with justice without the aid of music. Director Frank Borzage, who handled "Humoresque," coming to the Washington Theatre next Sunday, is of this type. -"Some of the scenes of "Humoresque" "are laid fn New York's Jewish quarter , 6ft" the East Side. Borzage accordingly "brought a Hebrew cantor and his . choir to the studio. Tfi director prepared - to rhoot" the episode in the i picture -where the musician-hero Is told that." he , will never .be able to play Again, v "Give us some sad music," ordered Boraage of the cantor. . The Hebrew choir struck into the wefrd strains of "Kol Nidre." Ncfw "Kol NMdre" is a famous Hebrew melody the most emotional ever written, some musicians say -and its , beauty and heart-rending appeal are ' well known to anyone who has attended a synagogue. The players in "Humoresque" became conscious in its effects immediately. Vera Gordon, playing the old mother, wept real tears.

Gaston Glass, the hero seemed suddenly to have lost his best friend. Even the electrician looked woe-begone and the cameraman forgot to turn the crank. "Stop it!' shouted Borzage to the musicians and even his voice was a little quavery. "I want pathos but 1 can't afford to turn this place into a morgue." So the choir played "Eli Ell", a Ghetto Jazz tune, Instead and immediately restored the smiles to everyone's cheeks, MURRETTE The first carload of Circassian walnut to be received from Russia since the war, was used in the production of "The Forbidden Woman" in which Clara Kimball Young is starred. Following the collapse of Russia, a small supply of this very valuable finishing wood was rapidy exhausted in this country and replacement could not be made for any amount of money. Recently a cargo was secured from one of the districts of Russia where some semblance of order has been restored by the white guards and from this cargo the Garson Studios secured the first carload to he used for motion picture purposes. In "The Forbidden Woman," one delightful feature will be found in the sets which will very probably be the most beautiful and costly ever given to the motion picture public. One of these sets shows the living room in the home of the American, Malcolm Kent. It is a wonderful room, half library and half living room, decorated with trophies of big game hunting and trophies of his many athletic successes. One end of this great apartment is occupied by a practical cobble stone fireplace, while the entire room including every foot of. the wall space nnd ceilings is paneled with Circassian walnut. The technical department estimated the value of the wood alone used in this set at nearly three thousand dollars. ."The Forbidden Woman" opens Sunday MURRAY While the veteran actor, Edwin Booth Tilton, was making a scene with Miss Eileen Tercy in "Her Honor the Mayor," in which this beautiful new Fox star is to appear at the Murray Theatre, Monday, a tiny spark of fire fell from one of the carbon lights and alighted squarely on the top of his head. A twinge of pain crossed his face. But it was a twinge that fitted the scene, because he was begging

Miss Percy, as mayor, to let him see j

his young son, whom he had not seen for years. Tilton gave no other token of the

pain he felt on his scalp until the scene was finished and Director Paul Cazeneuve began to compliment him on the excellent facial expression he had assumed. MURRETTE

Several of the scenes in Taylor

Holmes' first independent production,

"Nothing but the Truth," now showing at the Murrette theater, portray the interior of a magnificent Long Island country home and have been carried out in the most luxurious man

ner. The play Is a current release by i Metro Pictures corporation , and is based on William . Collier's famous Broadway laughing success. One of the principal scenes is in the hall of the house. The set was planned by Director David Kirkland in collaboration with a representive of one of the leading interior decorators in New York city and represents the last word in elegance and luxury. MURRAY Soe Nam knew what the Chinese characters drawn with purple ink really meant. They meant something quite

I different, however, to the men who re

ceived letters from the gang of blackmailing assassins, signed with the "Purple Cipher."

"The Purple Cipher." an enthralling mystery story by Will F. Jenkins, has been visualized by Vitagraph and ' is now showing at the Murray Theatre. Many tense scenes give Earle Williams, who appears in the stellar role of Leonard Staunton, excellent opportunities to do his best work. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE. A bare stage depicting the entire "back stage" where a theatrical rehearsal is in progress is the setting for the headline act opening Monday matinee at The Murray for the first half. The offering is "I Want My Rent" and consists of three cemedians and two girls, and the fun which arises from the many complex situations is (Continued on Page Twelve) .
