FIND NEW REMEDY TO ARREST PROGRESS OF TUBERCULAR GERM
(By Associated Press) WASHINGTON. Oct. 15. Refined chaulmoogra oil which experts of the SOTernment Public Health Service say has arrested the progress of leprosy
is soon to. be used by them in the flght
against tuberculosis. The experiments with tubercular patients will be conducted in Hawaii. Dr. J. T. McDonald, superintending rhysician of the leprosy investigation station at Kalihi in Honolulu, with Dr. A. L. Dean, chemist and president of the University of Hawaii, will start the fight against tuberculosis, at the same time continuing their work against leprosy. No Results Yet No concrete result of the use of the chaulmoogra oil in tuberculosis' cases
has yet been reported to the head-i quarters of the public health service! here, but from their Investigations I
with tubercular bacilli, isolated from a patient, Drs. McDonald and Dean have hopes of successful treatment of patients themselves. The bacilli of leprosy and tuberculosis, according to government scientists, have been found to have similar characteristics, and the fatty acids of . chaulmoogra oil seemingly have proved poisonous to the leprosy bacillus. This is the basis for the
scientific hope-that these acids like-1 wise will be deadly to the germ of the j "white plague." j Expect Cure . Dr. McDonald has not yet made any ! formal report of his work with the j
tubercular germs to officials here, but unofficial reports from Honolulu quote him as saying that scientists at
the University of California have discovered that the fatty acids of chaul-j
moogra oil are bactericidal to an acidfat bacillus, in which class are the leprosy and tuberculosis bacilli. The inference, according to the doctor, is that what has been done to end the dread of leprosy may possibly be repeated to relieve the world of tuberculosis. The public health service maintains a tubercular hospital in Hawaii separate from its leprosy stations, and experiments with tuberculosis are to be conducted at the former. Health officials here refrain from any prediction of results, but express hope that chaulmoogra oil will prove a specific for curing tuberculosis.
The Theatres
MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Variety is presented in the thre acts showing at the Murray theater tho last half of this week. The bill offers a mixture of sonps. dances, juggling and best of all, a bona-fid? mindreading act. With lightening speed the lady member of - the; team entitled "The Sharrocks", names articles, givps numbers on cards and pencils, and with unerring accuracy describes paclr and ever.v thing or person pointed out, while she stands blindfolded with her back to the audience. Before coming to thia feature of their act, the couple give a rapid fire comedy skit of a man and his wife, concessionists at a country fair, with a palmists' tent. More than one prominent local citizen spread a puzzled grin over his facp when the mind reader gave number.-; r,nd fpcts about articles on their person. This act is by far the best of its Vhd that lias visited Richmond for rrvMiy weeks. Three clever artists offering a ra'nia'ijre New York roof garden show, failed ill" "Roof Garden Trio." won a j-ol'd place with the audience by their ;-t!icatP dancing fteps. The feature of this act, however, is th clownish antics of one of the members, repre
senting a waiter. His feat of balancing himself upright on one finger thrust into a" bottle neck, received great applause. "Smith and Revere,' a man and woman comedy act, opens the vaudeville. This act has possibilities if developed into a higher standard of the art. Earle Williams in the "Purple Cipher," is the film offering. MURRETTE Taylor Holmes, the incomparable farceur of the screen, has won a new legion of followers on the silver sheet
by his inimitably humorous performance of Bob Bennett in "Nothing But The Truth," shown yesterday as the feature attraction at the Murrette Theatre. The picture is an adaptation of the famous novel of the same name by Frederic S. Isham, which was made into a stage play for William Collier some seasons ago. As a stage play it was one of the outstanding farce successes of the season. Taylor Holmes plays the role of Bob Bennett, a young society man who makes a wager with three friends at his club that he can go a week telling nothing but the truth to all he meets. The plot of the play is so full of amusing complications and surprises that it is all one constant gale of merriment from the first act to the last. MURRAY. In California it is a difficult proposition to find a cat that will run from a dog. After experimenting with a score of felines. Director Chester Bennett discovered that if he was to secure a .let black, lean, unhappy cat that would be afraid of a canine he must resort to newspaper advertising. It was very essential that he should have the animal for a very important scene in ' The Purple Cipher,"' Earle Wililame's picture, which is at the Murray theater.. Bennett says that classified advertising is one of the best paying investments he ever made, for in response to his requests for cats came all shapes, ages and varieties. Some were brought by street urchins, others came in limousines, accompanied by liveried footman. Every one near the Hollywood studio seemed anxious to get his or her cat into the movies. It required great diplomacy on the part of Director Bennett, to select a cat without offending the multitude that had assembled with cats of various hues and temperaments. A number of attendants were engaged to prevent the Vitagraph studio from becoming a battlefield of feline enemies.
