People of Balkans Make No Attempt To Escape Disease (By Associated Press) SOFIA, Bulgaria, Oct. 13 Disease in the Balkans Is looked upon by the people as a result of fate. The peasantry has been educated in superstitions rather than in the laws of

sanitation. They are opposed to the killing of mosquitoes, rats, flies and vermin, believing that they are a part of life. They know nothing about the carriers of disease. The importance of protecting their food supplies from winged insects has not been impressed upon them. Little or no attempt is made to drain mosquito pools or marshes, so that the Balkan states claim the distinction of having some of the worst malarial Eections on earth. The peasant has litttle faith in medical science. "How can a bug give us typhus?" they ask. "Every living thing harbors insects. Why net. man? If the good God sends us disease and misfortune, we believe that he knows best." Houses Unsanitary. In most districts In the Balkans the houses of the rural population are small and poorly constructed. Many of them are built of mud and straw and have no provision for sanitation or

The selection of a good material is an essential part of a building's construction or repair. A roofing is supposed to protect the interior of a building and

the material contained in it. Cheap roofing will crack, or rot and consequently Icak. The leak may damage the contents of your building, and the cost to you may be many times the value of even the highest-priced roofing. As a responsible distributor, with a reputation to maintain, we recommend

We know from knowledge and experience with roofing materials, that Ilu-ber-oid is made of the highest grade felt, and the best saturating compound and the best coating compound. It costs a trifle more, but it lasts some buildings covered 20 years ago are still in good condition. Ru-ber-oid will not crack, rot, run rust or warp, and will not leak. Sparks "fall dead" on Ru-ber-oid because of its fire-resisting qualities. We can tell you some interesting things about roofing. Come in and talk over your problem.

ventilation. The only air admitted to the homes is obtained through accidental imperfections in construction. A few of the houses have two stories, the lower floor being occupied by the horses and cattle, the upper by the family. In such houses as these families live crowded together under the most unhygienic conditions. Years pass without a doctor entering the huts. Disease goes untreated. In the country districts dentistry is virtually unknown. Bath tubs are rare in the Balkans, even in the larger cities. The people in that part of Europe rarely wash. "You must be very unclean people in the United States," said a well-to-do store-keeper of Sofia, to an American, "if you find it necessary to bathe every day."

Sinn Fein Punishment Takes Unusual Form BELFAST, Ireland, Oct. 13. The Sinn Fein police resort to old or unusual methods of punishing minor offenders. They marched a prisoner to a telephone pole at the national bank recently and fastened him to the

pole with a rope. A board affixed to his breast bore the inscription: "I am a thief. I stole eggs and this is my Just punishment." Crowds gathered round and inspected the prisoner who vainly tried to effect his release. Ultimately his sister hearing of her brother's plight came on the scene and liberated him. It is reported that she also has been placed under arrest. An engine driver of a munition train was similarly served in Dublin, lit) was tied to a lamp-post opposite the railway station in Amiens street with the word "scab" on a card suspended

round his neck. A large crowd gazed ! on him for half an hour when the police released him after filing through a padlock and handcuffs. MHWs AntLeUo OH, Kaowai m
