TEACHERS OF "WAYNE TO URGE RESOLUTIONS BEFORE ASSOCIATION At Teacher's Institute here Saturday the county . and city teachers met in
joint meetiag in the afternoon to discuss the resolutions .which will' be brought before the state association in Indianpolis next week. The most important of these resolutions are against contract breaking by teachers and its encouragement by school officials in offering positions at a late date to contracted teachers; tho passage of an adequate, state-wide teachers' retirement law; the passage of laws insuring permanent tenure of teachers during efficient service; provision for the selection of. the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and his staff on a non-partisan and merit basis; passage of a law placing upon the state as a whole a larger share of the financial burden conected with the pubMc school system; encouragement of the Smith-Towner bill, now pending in National Congress, which provides for Federal participation in the support of public education so that educational opportunities may be further equalized; state supervision of private as well as public schools. One of the resolutions suggests that a minimum of four years of carefully planned preparation beyond graduation from high school be required of grade teachers and in any locality, rural or urban. This would be impossible at present because of the shortage of teachers and too, the minimum at present is not even two years in all places. State Meeting Next Week. Health authorities have agreed that the control of tuberculosis demands primarily care of the health of children. More and more they have found that it Is in childhood that the seeds of tuberculosis are planted. Prior to the year 18S2, no one knew what caused tuberculosis. In that year, however. Dr. Koch, the famous German scientist, discovered a very minute germ which he named the tubercle bacillus, and which he demonstrated was the cause of many different forms of disease In various parts of the body.
Study of the tubercle bacillus showed that it grows best in dark, moist places, and that bright sunshine easily kills the germ. Experience has also shown that while no medicine which one can buy will cure tuberculosis, yet the disease may often be entirely arrested if the patient lives in fresh air, eats good food and gets sufficient rest. How to Keep Strong. There is one simple rule to follow, which will make it very unlikely that tuberculosis will lay hold on your child. In fact, by following this rule
children win be protected against many other diseases. This rule is: KEEP STRONG. If you keep your body strong nad well it will fight off the germs of disease so that they cannot harm you. And here are some smaller rules to make you keep strong: 1. .Always breath fresh air. Never sleep, study, work or play in a room without a window open. 2. --Eat nourishing food and drink plenty of pure water. Avoid food that is hard to digest, like heavy pastries. Never eat or drink anything that weakens the body. 3. Make cure that everything you put into your mouth is clean. Wash your hands always before eating and bathe your whole body often. Clean your teeth every day. Do not 6moke. 4. Exercise every day in the open air. Keep your shoulders straight. Take many deep breaths every day. If you wish to be a crusader against this ogre and wish to keep your city healthful, you must try to keep well yourself. Fresn Air Cure. Not long ago the teacher in one of our city schools noticed that a delicate child of ten years was. coughing a great deal and growing pale and thin. The school doctor examined the child and found that she had tuberculosis. After a visit from the school nurse, the parents consented to let the little one go to a sanatorium in the country. Here she had the right kind of food, and plenty of fresh air night and day.
At night she slept in a cozy bed out on the porch. She stayed there six months and then returned home rosycheeked, plump, happy and strong. The fresh air did it all. Now that she Is back in the city, she attends an open air school. In this school, even in the celdest weather in winter the windows are . kept wide open. This gives every child plenty eCfresh air and you can see by their fine red cheeks and their erect and sturdy bodies that it does them lots of good. There are now over'flve hundred open air schools in the United States. Some of them are for children who have tuberculosis; others are for children who are run down in health and likely to get tuberculosis. The open air schools help them to grow strong so that tuberculosis can't get a hold on them. Such schools are a blessing and we should have many more of them. All of us need a great deal of fresh air to keep us strong. Questions relating: to Child Health and 1o elated problems will be wered by experts of the United States Public Health Servlee. MOST people know that the musical enjoyment which they get out of a phonograph depends upon one thing. That thing is the phonograph's realism. This picture shows the best way to test a phonograph's realism. Miss Betsy Lane Shepherd, the famous soprano, is standing beside the New Edison, and singing in direct comparison with the New Edison's Re-Creation of her voice. 185 audiences, aggregating more than 100,000 people, have actually heard this comparison. None could distinguish between her living voice and its Re-Creation. This is one of the phenomenal records of realism. The New Edison holds all other records of realism, too, because no other phonograph attempts this comparison-test or could sustain it.
