, 'MURRAY In tbe Alice Joyce special production. "The Prey." the popular Vitagraph star appears first as a charming young woman without a care In the world, happy in the companionship of her father and the devotion of her lover. With startling suddenness she is made to realize that one of the two must be unworthy of her faith. Horror takes the place of serene happiness as her dominant emotion. This gives way to scorn, to grief, to anxiety and dread, to loathing of a man circumstances have compelled her to marry, and, at last, to Joy and delight in life once more. The role gives Alice Joyce exceptional opportunities for the display of her talents and her charm in many moods. "The Prey" will be shown at the Murray theatre the last halt. RICHMOND James Oliver Curwood is perhaps the best known writer in the world of wild animal and North country stories. Three pictures made from his recent novels should take the country by storm after the adaptations have been seen on the screen. They are "The Courage of Marge O'Doone," "Back to God's Country" and "The River's End." "The Courage of Marge O'Doone," produced by Vitagraph as a big special feature with an all star cast, will be seen at the Richmond theater on Sunday. It is a red-blooded story of the great Canadian Northwest, a land where heroism and danger are part of the daily routine. Pauline Starke plays the title role and Niles Welch is the hero. WASHINGTON Robert Warwick's role is the star of "Thou Art the Man," t' new photoplay, is said to be one that appeals to all classes of movie-goers. The picture is comins to the Washington Theatre for two days commencing Friday. The ex-flghter is a soldier of fortune in the South African diamond country. Innocently involved in a diamond-smuggling business, he leaves his crooked employers, only to meet a pretty girl and discover that her Mother is involved in the Bame disToputable game. Later, a packet of stolen diamonds are discovered on him, and to protect the girl he serves a jail sentence. Her mind is polsonea in his absence by her brother and others. Coming upon him after his release and when he is rehabilitating himself as the manager of a plantation, she denounces him. The truth, however, comes out, and she is glaa to beg his forgiveness and admit reborn love for him. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Without doubt one of the best bills that has been shown at the Murray
Theater for a number of weeks is now playing for tbe last half. It is difficult for tbe critical observer to choose which of the two of the acts should be the head-liner. The third act of the bill, although probably not equal to either of the other two, is one for which no apology need be made. "The Mast Kiddles," an act of several youngsters apparently between the ages of three and eight, made the biggest hit of the bill. Their singing, dancing and winsome ways drew exclamations of praise and admiration

from the audience. With as much skill as might be expected from those much their senior, the young tots gave their act " without visible effort or worry, and in return they received the hearty approval accorded professionals. Especially winning was the overall-clad three-year-old. - His brief appearance in song and "shimmy" set the house rocking with laughter.
Singing of merit was offered by Frish, Rector and TooUn, three young men constituting "A Triple Alliance of Hilarious Harmony." The voices . of the three blended well, and won an encore from their hearers. No better singing has been presented on the local vaudeville stage recently. Barrel jumping, Juggling and performing dogs were the features of the
first act given by "Hazeltine's Comedy Circus. Of the three, the barrel jumping by one of the artists, was the' most deserving of mention. When, with a handkerchief bound across his eyes,
the jumper leaps safely from barrel to barrel, the audience was highly approAlice Joyce in "The Prey." is the moving picture attraction. ...

For a long time, remarks the Nek York Times, "high prices seemed like the weather, atout which, as Mark Twain said, everybody talked but nothing was done." Then the buying public,' reacting at last from the wave of extravagance that has swept the country in war time, began a few months ago to rebel against the ever-diminishing purchasing power of the dollar. The result of this action is seen in the dramatic price cuttings in the wholesale market last month, which affected wheat, corn, oats, wool, cotton, automobiles, textiles, clothing, foodstuffs, metal, leather, and many other commodities. The wholesale prices of these commodities have declined on the average about 20 below the high prices of February, according to R. E. Edmundson, of the New York News Record, a commercial daily, who predicts that these cuts are "certain to be reflected in a reduced cost of living removing the usual excuses for striking to get higher wages." Dispatches from various cities report that the procession of falling prices in the retail trade has already begun. The leading article in THE LITERARY DIGEST this week, October 9th, will be read with great satisfaction by the public. It gives a comprehensive review, drawn from all sources of information, of the conditions of trade in the United States, including the prospects for the country's getting back on a lower price level without affecting the hours or wages of labor.
