li Heart Problems C i
!Dear Mrs. Thompson: Last year at high school I met a young man who
took me to several school parties. During the summer he was out of town and I did not hear from him. Now I have received a post card from him. He says he is away at college,, gives his address and says, "Please write." What do you think, should I do as he says or wait until he writes to me first? ROSE MARY GREEN. He has written to "you first. It is true that his card cannot take the Tlace of a letter, but it will be all right for you to respond with a little letter to him. Do not make your first letter too long and newsy since he really cheated you. Pear Mrs. Thompson: I wish you would kindly put the following few lines in your column for "A Heart Hungry Mother," as she showed me a very great kindness by her letter of advice. Now I know there is some one else who understands my circumstances. "A Heart Hungry Mother," will you please send Mrs. Thompson your name and address? She has mine and will Bend me yours. FLOSSIE. Your appreciation is most gratifying. I am sure "A Heart Hungry Mother" will feel repaid for her effort to help you.

BE1NQ PRE-NUPTIAL ADVICE, PRO AND CON. Therefore, my Son, I adjure thee, to consider well before thou chooseth woman for Beauty, which unto itself is fleeting and its stage settings are expensive, and requireth many luxuries
1. Verily, I say unto you my Son, heed my words, for unto thy welfare I have given much consideration, and I knoweth that knowledge cometh to a man late in life and hard, like unto the cutting of a wisdom tooth; and when it shall come to pass that thou desireth to mate and set thy hand and seal to Matrimony, choose well and with deliberation, and remember that perfection is not to be had, even in goods made to order, and virtues that a woman hath in one thing she lacketh in another, therefore, my Son, it behooves thee to set thy fancy on her who hath that virtue which thou desireth most, and content thyself and seeth that thy desire changeth not with possession; for it is easier for a man to go through the eye of a Devil's darning needle than it is for him to get a divorce and pay alimony. .2. Therefore, my Son, I adjure thee, to consider well before thou chooseth a woman for Beauty, which unto itself is fleeting, and its stage settings are expensive, and requireth many luxuries, which are, seal-skin coats and diamonds; therefore, beware ye, my Son, of her who hath naught to commend her except a pretty face, for she is like unto the pain of appendicitis, which costeth thee $300 more than common belly-ache. 3. Beware also, my Son, and take not unto thyself a wife who knoweth naught of culinary art, for a cookless wife is more to be despised than a meatless dinner, yea, who can bear it? A woman who cannot touch a man's heart through the medium of his stomach, is like unto oleomargarine, which is the White Bread's burden.
4. Harken unto my words, my Son, and take not unto thyself a wife whoenjoyeth ill health; to a Hospital she is a necessity but to a Husband she is a detriment, for she capitalizes her misery, which is her only possession, and clingeth to a man worse than a lawyer to a fee, and galleth thee worse than a boil on the back of thy neck when thou art attending an aviation meeting. 5. Beware ye also, my Son, of her who seweth not the buttons on thy shirts, neither doth she sweep, yet in all her Glory she knitteth on the high-ways and in the by-ways; yea Solomon with all his wives and affinities was not busier knitting than one of these, and thou shalt be left to suffer a loneliness more solitary than a mouse gnawing at a rind of cheese. 6. And lo, my Son, knoweth thou that a double chin on a woman may be an asset, but a double disposition is a liability more to be despised than Bolshevism, for a man knoweth not with which disposition she assaileth him next, as it varieth according to that for which she worketh a man, and that which she desireth today, may fill her with weariness tomorrow; and thou shalt be harder put to keep her in good humor, than thou shalt be in the keeping of the Ten Commandments. 7. Furthermore, my Son, since custom hath ordained that Man shalt have the exclusive privilege of choosing a mate, and that Woman shalt not be the abettor to the act except by "yes-ing" and "No-ing", in after years blame her not that she accepted thee for better or worse, and then got the worst of it. Ah-Man Oh-Woman.

The Growing Child A series of articles prepared especially for The Palladium, by the United . States Public Health Service, Washington, D. C
DIPHTHERIA The slogan "Keep your child at home when he has a sore throat," used in the article on "scarlet fever," is equally applicable to diphtheria. This disease, like scarlet fever, has a short period of incubation, 1. e., it develops within a few days after the infection was contracted. If your child is not
immune he will probably show some j
signs of the disease within from one to seven days, usually from two to five days, after exposure. Unfortunately, the manner of its onset and the type of diphtheria varies, so that in mild cases it is not always possible to say that a child has diphtheria in the beginning. In these cases this cannot always be stated positively
until the secretion from the throat and i
nose has been examined for the germs of the disease. Hence, you can see the importance for the safeguarding of other susceptible persons, of keeping your child at home when he has a sore throat, nasal discharge, and enlarged glands in the neck, even though he does not seem to be really ill. He may be carrying with him virulent germs, dangerous to the community at large, and particularly so to the children. Keep Child Quiet. It is equally important for your own child's safety that he not only be kept at home when he has the above mentioned symptoms but that he also be kept quiet. The toxin, or poison of diphtheria seems to have a decided predilection for the heart and nervous system, and sometimes for the kidneys. In nearly all severe cases there is some involvement of the heart, and a post-diphtheria paralysis is not at all uncommon, the muscles of the throat being frequently affected. The use of antitoxin in diphtheria is now the recognized method of treatment. It is important for parents to understand, however, that this, to be most efficacious, must be administered before the toxin, the poison secreted by the germs, has had a chance to do much damage. They will, therefore, recognize the necessity of having a
case of diphtheria treated as early as possible. When diphtheria Is prevalent consider every sore throat a probable case of diphtheria and send for the doctor. r-,rT.prodin.0 Germs. - The "germs are contained in the secretions from the nose and throat, and are spread by coughing, sneezing and talking. The patient or "carrier" is a source of contagion until two negative, cultures have been obtained. This means that two specimens from the throat or nose have been examined at least one day apart, and have been found free from the diphtheria germs on both occasions. This usually occurs withtin two weeks. The disease is spread by the patient, infected articles (toys, etc.), and by
"carriers." A "carrier" is a person who carries the germs in his throat long after he has had the disease, or often when he has never had it at all. In the latter case, he has received the germ from some one, but, not being susceptible "to the disease it has never developed, though the germ remains in his throat. He is then an unsuspected and perfectly innocent source of contagion. Because of the danger of carriers and mild, unrecognized cases, in any instance where a case of diphtheria has developed in a family, institution or school, every person who has been exposed should have an examination of the tnroat and nose. Schick's Test. A valuable means of determining
one's immunity to diphtheria is found in what is known as the Schick test. This consists of injecting into the skin a small amunt of the diphtheria toxin. If the subject Is immune, no reaction occurs. If he Is susceptible, a small red spot appears where the injection

was made, remains from about 6lx to ten days and disappears gradually, leaving a brownish spot which may be seen for months. There are 'usually no constitutional symptoms. and no pain. By means of this test it Is possible to decide which persons are susceptible to the disease, and these can be immunized by antitoxin. The procedure is applicable to institutions where diphtheria has been repeatedly prevalent, and the object of immunization is to prevent a possible outbreak of the disease. In this case toxin-antitoxin should be used. It is well for parents to know that a child's susceptibility to diphtheria is increased by the presence ' in the throat of adenoids and enlarged tonsils.
