EDNA PV KENT FORCE? THE OUT Even though the summer, officially. Is drawing to a close, one shouldn't give up the out-of-doors habits that make the summer a time of re-building. I think every woman understands that to be beautiful she must be healthy unless, indeed, she was endowed at birth with perfection of form and feature. Some of my readers are fortunate enough to live in a climate that permits out-of-door life most of the year. But many who live where the winters are severely cold, feel that healthy out-door exercises must cease, when the thermometer drops. And in that they are wrong, for nothing is better for the health than to be in the keen, clear, cutting air of a cold winter's day. It purifies the blood and sends it racing, it makes the eyea bright and, of course, it brings marvelous complexions. But today's chat is only to serve as a reminder that there are many forms of out-door sport still to be enjoyed. Tennis will give you a quick, accurate eye and a graceful, agile body. Swimming will develop your chest and shoulders and bust and arms, and is one of the best exercises for toning up the whole system. Walking will make you stronger and will give you more rewards than that of health, if you walk in pretty country places. Indeed, anything that will get you into the open, using your muscles, will add to your good looks providing always, that you do not exert yourself to the point where you are exhausted. Motoring, horseback riding, driving, golf even the mild game of croquet will add to your looks and your stock of good health. The first point is pure, fresh air; the second, exercises of the body. Grey Eyes. The average weight and height of a girl at 14 years of age would be about 110 pounds for five feet as her height. Individual cases vary, of course, as a girl at that age may be growing tall and will be apparently underweight, while she is perfectly healthy. Judgment should govern the decision in such a case. The foods that are fattening are those made up of starch, oils or sugar. Among the starchy food will be found all white bread, potatoes, corn, rice, beets and beans. Fatty meats, such as pork, produce carbon, which stores up fat, unless plenty of other foods are taken to counteract this. Pie crust, cakes and ice cream are also fattening. Freckles can be bleached off, but the tendency to them will remain. You should use the lemon juice every day, if" you feel they disfigure you. The acid should be allowed to dry into the skin for about ten minutes. Heart Problems Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am engaged to a young man of 23, and we love each other dearly. I go out home with him almost every Sunday and we Take his parents to church. I love his parents, but his mother does not seem to have much love for me. I don't know why, as I never did anything to her that she would dislike. Please tell me how to gain her friendship? Would you break the en gagement on her account? I am not a very talkative girl and am not beau 1 tiful, but I love this young man and . feel that I must have him. i SWEETY, j Imagine how you would feel if you j thought you were losing a dearly loved son. The mother is wrong in holding" j a feeling of loss, if she does; instead j she should try to feel that she will j gain by keeping her son and having j a new daughter, too. j Be yourself and hold tight to your feeling of love for the mother. Do ! not try too hard to make her care for j vou: simply trust that sometime she will love you because you are the right wife for her son. You have ab solutely no cause for giving him up. BRAZIL Thomas Mayes and John Brown, both of Indianapolis, have been placed under arrest here, on charge of transporting "white mule" whisky. Three flve-gallon jugs of the liquor were found in a machine belonging to the men. They are now held under bond of $2,000 each. and (S l nil Thi is turning an old saying face about, but modern methods of reducing fat have made this revision possible. An increase of 150 per cent in the cost of materials for decoration has resulted in a decision to abandon the usual automobile parade given in connection with the fall festival here. A committee that has been investigating" the matter reports that the cost of decorating cars would be far greater than the largest prize the managemejnt of the fall festival could offer far the best decorated car. Merchants have subscribed $3,500 to pay expenses for the festival this year.

The Growing Child A series ot articles prepared especially tor The Palladium, by the United States Public Health Service, "Washington, D. C VACCINATION. Very few people today have seen a case of smallpox, because, as a result of vaccination, civilized lands have almost no smallpox, within their borders. Before vaccination was discovered and practiced, however, one-tenth of all deaths were caused by smallpox. In Russia, in those days, out of every seven children born, one died of smallpox. In the eighteenth century (before vacinnation was practiced) sixty million people died of smallpox. In 1707, there was an epidemic of smallpox in Iceland, and out of a population of fifty thousand people, eighteen thousand died of the disease. Just think, nearly half the" entire population carried off in a year by a disease which today can be entirely prevented. Yet. in spite of all this, cranks go about crying out against vaccination. In Prussia, before the Franco-Prussian war (1870) there were ninety deaths a year from smallpox, to every one hundred thousand of the population. Twenty years later, after the amount of smallpox afflicting the soldiers led the government to adopt a compulsory vaccination law, the deaths from smallpox per one hundred thousand of population fell from ninety to two. At the same time (1884) Austria had not yet learned its lesson, did not have compulsory vaccination, and had fifty-two deaths a year from smallpox per one hundred thousand of population, whereas Prussia had only two deaths. Do such figures mean nothing to you? If you are eane, and will listen tc reason, heed the advice here given. Vaccination is a very slight and painless operation, and is an effective protection against smallpox. Early Vaccination. All infants should be vaccinated by the time they are six months old, and should be again vaccinated before they bpgin school. All people should be revaccinated every six or seven years. The re-vaccination is necessary because vaccination is known to protect against smallpox only .six or seven years. It Is foolish to wait, for an epidemic to break out before having yourself revaccinated. You may be caught in the first lot that suffer and not have time to take advantage of the protection of re-vaccinaon. In the presence of an epidemic or a threatened epidemic every person should be vaccinated, no matter how young or how old, and no matter how recently he was vaccinated. It is not necessary to wait for any particular month to be vaccinated. Many people think May is the best time, but this is not at all true; any other month will

do just as well. The belief may be t return, and double penalty levied undnp to th fart that Edward .Tenner. I der the Volstead Act.

who introduced the practice of vacci nation to the world, did his first vaccination May 14th, 1796. Remember the name of this great benefactor of mankind. It deserves to be honored. When a vaiccination is performed, .the slight-wound must be kept clean and dry until complete healing which may take from ten to fourteen day. Don't wear a vaccination shield. Failure to keep the sore clean and dry is what causes the badly inflamed parts, which the cranks falsely blame on the vaccination itself. Noted Irish Priest Urges Murder Boycott DUNDALK, Ireland, Oct. 4. Father Nicholas Lawless, a noted Louth priest, told the promoters of a meeting recently held in Dundalk in aid of expelled Belfast workers that they were "beginning at the wrong end." "The way to save our people in the north is to end at once the crimes that are disgracing Catholic Ireland, both north and 60uth," he adds. "It is those crimes that enraged and no wonder the workers of Belfast who have said they will let Catholic workers return to work when the shooting of men of the Royal Irish Constabulary and others stops. It Is all very well to denounce "reprisals," but who will say that reprisals are as wicked as the crimes that provoke them? "Instead of boycotting Belfast, let us all Join in boycotting murderers
