PROHIBITION SAVED , VAST SUM, DECLARES GOVERNOR OF MAINE

V WASHINGTON, Sept. 28. Prohibi'tlon was credited with producing a caving of $2,000,000,000 for the nation 'in the last year by Governor Milikln of Maine, in addressing the closing session last night of the fifteenth in

ternational congress against alcoholJsm. ' ' ; "Prohibition," "he declared, "has made most kinds of business better, and has injured no legitimate business except that of the undertaker." "The three outstanding results of prohibition," he continued, "are the saving of about $2,000,000,000 waste in expenditure, a tremendous Increase in the efficiency of labor and a startling decrease in crime with its attendant poverty and wretchedness. Gives Boys a Chance. - "From the standpoint of practical government, however, the most Important contribution that prohibition has made to the welfare of the nation is to be found in the simple fact that a new generation will be growing up untainted by the liquor habit and un hampered by the conditions of squalor r.nd wretchedness which the liquor habit has imposed upon so many thousand innocent children in the past. "The supreme importance of prolii- . bition lies in the fact that it gives the average boy and girl in Atocrica a better chance to grow up into a wholesome, strong and clean American citizen, and because of the very existence of our form of government de . pends upon the development of that sort of citizenship in the coming generation, prohibition is entitled to rank as one of the greatest safeguards of national life." Quotes Economic Benefits. Referring again to the economic benefits of prohibition, Governor Mil . likin declared that the nation's drink bill formerly amounted to $2,000,000.000 annually, and this money, he declared, "now finds its way into the normal channels of legitimate trade." "The grocers, the clothiers, amusement proprietors and the banks," he added, "are getting the money that formerly went for drink. Hotels that fancied themselves dependent on the liquor business, are doing the best business in their history without R "Prohibition has not only eliminated an enormous waste in expenditures, but it has greatly increased the effic iency of labor. The average life of a laboring man Is longer under prohibition; he does better work while he is at it, and he works more steadily. A report from one large labor agency in an Industrial section Is typical. It is stated that out of 35,000 men employed by that agency when the coun- . try was wet, the average length of time that the man remained on the job was less than 30 days. The average more than doubled with the first year of prohibition."

WASHINGTON Sari, a beggar girl on the streets of Constantinople, enters the Aya Sophia Mosque, where women are forbidden, to cleanse her soul. She has attracted the attention of an American soldier of fortune commanding the Black Horse Troop. The mosque also is the secret trysting place of a young American and the favorite wife of Achmet Hamid, a powerful sheik. Hamld suspects his wife and waits for her at the mosque, and seeing Sari enter, disguised by a veil and followed by the American, the sheik plunges a dagger in his back. The wild ride across the desert, the battle at the city's gates and the final triumph of justice and love are told in a series of the most stirring scenes in "The Virgin of Stamboul, ' starring Priscilla Dean, to be shown at the Washington theater last times today. MURRETTE Constance Talmage has searched for sinners, she's been a love expert and a perfect woman, but for the first time in her career has she gone to the lengths of rescuing a young man from jail in a picture, "Good References,"

her latest First National vehicle, to he exhibited at the Murrette Theatre for the first time Tuesday. Being in love with a fascinating young lady is enough to keep any young men in a constant state of worry and perplexity. But being in love with a beautiful girl who bailed you out of night court and didn't tell your family about the trouble keeping the little dark secret as a whip over your head, to drive you at your leisure that is misery that beggarb description. MURRAY The fourth hour was Daisy's, the younger daughter. An artist of reputation for cold, brilliant work; a young adopted son; a something which made her flee at even a suggestion of visiting the quiet old home where the judge and his wife lived their beautiful life; a real woman-and the Hushed Hour. And the most beautiful part of the story lies in the fact that the widow, who lind. for forty-odd years, chins as

the ivy clings to the oak, shed no tear for the beloved husband who lay so quietly below, but felt herself rich beyond compare In the lot of a long life which had fallen to her, and in the serene faith and understanding of what the Hushed Hour would mean to the children, and in the beautiful words she was soon to hear over him.

MURRAY VAUDEVILLE j Three acts of worth-while entertoinment opened at the Murray theatre!

Monday. "At the Turnpike," a miniature mu

sical comedy, heads the bill. Its opening and finale are staged in true musical comedy style, and the entire offering moves along without a hitch. Miss Peggy Houlton, a versatile ingenue, heads the act. Two old cronies, typical village store hangouts, supply the comedy. "Apple Blossoms" supplies the players with a theme for their opening and closing number. Miss Houlton and her partner follow the opening with "All I Want," intermingled with a few steps. "Chili Con Carni" was well rendered by four men but "Buddy," sung by Miss Houlton and the three village hangouts, was the big hit. Harry Watson entertained the audience for just "Nine Minutes" with his antics and foolish maneuvering. There is a quiet humor about all of his lines, which puts them over. His offering extends not a second over "nine minutes," for he has himself timed by an alarm clock, which he sets before beginning his act. Stetson and Huber opened the bill with their offering, "Musical Comedy Recruits." They open with "Dark Town's Dancing School." The Spanish dance by the woman of the team was well done, as were a few eccentric steps by the man.
