Expedite Settlement of the Milton Bank Failure
The public good will be served by & prompt
settlement of the bona fide claims against the
Farmers' Banking company of Milton. Hun
dreds of depositors in and about Milton had their
savings in" the institution when it failed. They
have use for their money antj are entitled tp re
ceive it as quickly aa possible.
Long litigation between the stockholders an
alleged bondsmen to decide financial responsibil
ity will involve a long period in which the depositors must wait for their money. It has been pointed out, and correctly so, that the fixing of
the responsibility is a question that interests
only the stockholders and the alleged bond3meOt Depositors should not be made to wait for their money until this question has been settled. The claim of $100,000 which the receiver ha3 filed in circuit court against the alleged bondsmen will take its regular course, and may involve strong appeals that will consume many months of time. In the meantime the depositors will be compelled to wait for tjpek mcney.
Without entering into the legal phases f the situation, it is apparent that the persons most directly interested in the settlement of the at? fairs of the institution are the depositors. Their rights should be paramount to all other consicU erations and every effort should be made to expedite payment of just claims. Fire Prevention Day Fire prevention should never cease. ? America's Joss from preventable fjres is the largest in the world. Carelessness exacts a toll in property and lives that is staggering. Insurance cpmpanies and state fire marshals, wage a relentless campaign against avoidable causes of fire. Many fires, they.asrt, can be traced direct-, ly to throwing away matches that still have a spark in them. Carelessly thrown near combust-; ible matter, near a lace curtain, paper, rubbish, or on a rug, they of terj ca,use fires that destroy homes, business houses, factories and warehouse. Another prolific cause of fires is the lighted cigarette or cigar stub. Fire smoulders long in tobacco, and if combustible matter is lying about sets it ablaze. Electric irons left with the current turned on often cause disastrous fires. 1 The observance of Get. 9 as fire prevention day began in 1911 and has become a national event. Governors of states and mayors designate the day by proclamation and ask co-operation o citizjens in removing combustible material from
tneir nomes ana premises. .Business men arg
urged to inspect their stores to prevent an acUjulatiaii cf material that may cause fire.
