MUST GIVE AGE ON REGISTRATION, RULE

OF ELECTION BODY

.Women and men of Wayne County and Indiana who registered last Saturday as being "21 years -old, plus," Instead of giving their specific ages, will be Ineligible to vote in November unless they correct their statement on the next registration day, Oct. 4. This was the decision of the state election commissioners, one a Republican and- one a Democrat, who -met yesterday In Indianapolis and prepared an interpretation of the age feature of the registration law on request from several counties where many women and some men, ticklish about their

age, went to recora as uems plus." - The opinion ' is given, by W. W. Spencer. Democrat, and William H. Thompson, Republican, who, with the Governor as the ex-officio member, comprise the state board of election commissioners. Maurice E. Tennant, as a member of the state board's legal committee, also concurs in the opinion. Identification Phase Considered. It Is the holding of the commissioners that the law requires each voter to give his or her exact age. They contend that the purpose of the requirement Ib to establish identification of the voter as well as to ascertain that the voter is of legal age. They assert that the giving of the wrong age might permit fraudulent voting. Should a man or woman of 50 years, for example, register as "21, plus," it might be possible, suggest the commissioners for some young voter to go to the polls and vote in the name of an older person who had given his or her name incorrectly. "We beg to state that it is our opinion that a proper compliance with the registration law of Indiana," reads the opinion of the commissioners, "requires that an- applicant for registration shall state in writing his or her age on the last pYeceding anniversary of his or her birthday. It is not considered as sufficient to state that the applicant was 21 years

or over on a certain date prior to the I date of registration. See Sect. 10 of j of the registration law of Indiana." . J Question Passed In Johnson. It is reported that In Johnson, county the Republican and Democratic county chairmen agreed not to raise the ago question, and to permit women, if they choose, to conceal their true age. The question arises as to whether the registration was improper in the precincts where the registration boards accepted the registration of persons wba were known to be given an incorrect abe. The state election commissioners answer this by saying that such a registration probably would stand, unless on election day, some one should challenge the right to vote of a man or woman who had not complied strictly with the age requirement and thus registered improperly. "It is risky for those who did not give their correct age to let their record stand, because their right to vote

might be challenged on election day. My advice is for those who gave the wrong age to avail themselves of the opportunity on Oct. 4 to correct their statement and-thus avoid a chance of being challenged," said Mr. Spencer.

Oxford Colored Boy Forges Check ; Caught, Confesses, Goes Free OXFORD, O., Sept. 10. John Warren, 17, colored, a dishwasher in a local restaurant, last evening forged the name of his employers Willis Brothers to a check for $J5, which he cashed at a meat market The fraud was discovered soon afterward, anLlhe village police started on the hunt for Warren. He was found hiding at the C. I. and W. railroad station, waiting for a train to Chicago. He acknowledged his guilt, returned the money and was permitted to go free. Squabble Over Child. v An Interesting legal fight is on here for the possession of little Birdie Saunders, 7-yearold daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Saunders. For several years the daughters, are -said to have absolutely refused to permit the little

girl to depart from their home. Yesterday, upon the advice of lawyers, Saunders, accompanied by. Village Marshal Sheard, went to the

home of his mother and took the child away. In the meantime action for the possession of the child has been started in the juvenile court, Hamilton. Mrs. Saunders, to fortify herself, has taken the child across the line ino Indiana. May Raise Tax Levy. The voters of Oxford township will be called upon at the November election to vote for an increased tax levy of three mills for school purposes. The present levy of three mills Is too small. The increased expenses arise from the centralization school system. Last month the voters of the township defeated the increased levy. ' Unless it

carries at the coming election, the township board of education will be compelled to borrow money with which to pay tuitions and transport children from country districts to the village schools.
