WASHINGTON Another one of those country boy types which Charles Ray knows so well how to portray is furnished him in his new picture, '.'Alarm Clock Andy," which Is showing today and tomorrow at the Washington theater. Andy is a bashful, stuttering motor truck salesman straight from the "sticks." He has a hard time trying to get along, even when Jie patterns after Blinker, the firm's crack salesman. But he meets and falls in love with the boss's daughter and follows her on his vacation to a summer resort. Here chance puts Andy in the way of a big buyer of trucks and suddenly coming to life, he puts over a bit of deception and sells a big bill of goods that puts him on, the way to fortune and happiness w'lth the girl. Charles Ray gives his usual natural, sympathetic performance in the role
of Andy. Tom Guise, Millicent Fisher
and George Webb are also excellent in
character bits. Thomas H. Ince pro
duced the picture and it is a Paramount Artcraft directed by Jerome Storm. MURRAY

REALTY TAX BURDEN LIGHTER, PERSONALS HEAVIER, IN 1921 The portion of the tax duplicate of Indiana made up by real estate is being reduced and the portion composed of personal property assessments Is being Increased by the 1919 tax law. Under the operation of the new law the total tax duplicate has been increased from approximately $2,000, 000,000 prior to 1919 to about $6,000,000,000 -for 1920, but the burden on real estate has been reduced. Official tabulations, announced by Commissioner S. .N. Cragun of the state tax board, show that the percentage of the duplicate made up by real estate Is lower than under the old law. Real estate is assessed every fouc years. . Since, 1907 the proportion of duplicate made up by real estate steadily Increased until after the 1919 law became effective. In 1919 there was a decrease in the percentage of real estate, which has been made more evident by readjustments this year when some real estate has been reassessed. The following , table shows the percentage proportion of the tax duplicate made up by real estate and per-

Opponents' Statements. Opponents of the law nave charged that under the new tax legislation that the burden of taxation carried by real estate has been heavily Increased. It has been alleged that a large proportion of the enormous Increase made In the tax duplicate through the assessments at true cash value has been the result of the boosting of real estate valuations in a discriminatory manner. These charges, it is said, have Jed some farmers of the stato to believe that the burdens of taxation are falling more heavily en them than op other classes. Tabulations made by the state board
of tax commissioners show that about two-thirds of the counties of the state have made increases in the valuations of personal property of last year, Including the 1919 horizontal increases. These counties show an Increase of approximately 8175,000,000 In personal property valuations. All counties In making 1920 personal property valuations showed an ' increase over last year, but not as much as the horizontal increases put on In about onethird of the counties.
