; What the Creel Committee Cost

The total expenditures of the United States committee on public information during the war,

under direction of George Creel, cost the country $8,245249, which was reduced to anet cost of

$4,954,200 by receipts from motion picture films.

Nothing will be gained by calling up the mis

understanding' that arose under the Creel at

tempt to regulate government publicity during

the war. Everyone remembers the quarrels and

bickering.

But this fact is well established. The failure

of the' Creel committee is conclusive proof that the American people will not tolerate an attempt to censor its sources of information. Hereafter the government will consider long and hard any suggestion for the creation of a bureau intended to supervise the distribution of news among the American people. , "It may have cost the American people -a large sum of money, to discover that the press does not need supervision in times of national stress and that it is fully- able to discover the news and give it to its readers, but the money was well spent if it precludes any future effort of the government to regulate news distribution. At no time during its existence did the Creel bureau function with any degree of satisfaction. The principle upon which it was founded did not appeal to the American consciousness, and the methods it used to carry out its mission repelled rather than attracted. Like a number of other incidents of the war,

it is one that was exceedingly expensive and pro

ductive of no results. " ;

" Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams

f I came across a very expressive sentence the other da7 In my reading. Here it Is: "The man who cannot for- , give any mortal thing is a green hand in life- , .:

The. population in . "green hands" Is i all too great in the world! t Most of us are . crude blunderers "anyway. We lack breadth and sound-

: iiess. vv e travel aruuuu an enure .block when -we could have taken a cross cut. We look thru little holes into the landscape of the world and so see only a small part. : We are green hands, : We feel our way too carefully. We are too prudent too wise. Mrs. Grundy gets our "goat" too often and 'the great God's plans go undone. : The heart of us keeps pumping life into every corner of our nature, but our "educated" instincts get pushed to

the side while some strange procession 'lias to pass by in the name of convention or good form. I stopped at a roadside where a sign read "Maple Sugar for Sale." Now I am very fond of Maple Sugar! So I stopped and bought some. And such Sugar! So pure that it melted in my mouth. But this is what I want to bring out It was HONESTLY made it was ALL Maple Sugar made by people who - hadn't learned how to adulterate and profit dishonestly. The hands that made it were not "green." The man with an honest purpose is ;not green at his job. ; The man who places human character higher than human achievement doesn't work with a green brain. He

is the soul of proficient living. Try not to be a green hand life. -

He was continually interrupted, however, by an old man, who repeatedly exclaimed: "Ah! but what about our oats?",. The agent turned to the speaker and replied: "I heard you, my friend, and I am almost compelled to answer for peace and quiet. Yotfr behavior and remarks make it hard to realize you have only two legs." He had no more interruptions from the Intruder.

Answers to Questions

BIANCA

Few more romantic histories attach

to any name than that of the exquisite version of Blanche. Bianca signifies

white"; It comes, of course, from the

French blanc representing the absence

of color, or opposite of black.

The first historical character who

bore the name from which Bianca was

directly evolved was Bianca of Navarre, the Queen of Sancho IV of

Castille, from whom it was bestowed

upon her granddaughter, the child of Eleanor Plaotagenet, whom her uncle. King John, employed as the lure by which Phlllippe Auguste was detached from the support of Arthur of Brittany. The treaty stated that Phlllippe should wed one of the daughters of Alfonso of Castille; the choice was left to the

ambassadors and they, disliking the sound of the name of the elder sister. Urraca, chose Bianca as the bride of Philippe. Bianca, of Blanche of Castille, as she Is recorded In history, was the first and best of the many Queenregents of France. Her name became very popular in that country and spread quickly into Italy as Bianca. Though England adopted Blanche, also iBanca soon acquired vogue and is now regarded as English rather than Italian. The ruby Is Bianca's talismanio gem. It is believed to bring its wearer courage, wealth, and good health. Monday is Bianca's lucky day and 2 her lucky number.

Bryan in Washington;

Is Salking in Tent ; WASHINGTON, Sept. 6. William Jennings Bryan, former secretary of state and three times the Democratic nominee for president, came to Washington Sunday." He is staying at a hotel here for a few days, he saya, and for once is dodging the light of publicity as much as he can. 1 Bryan appears to be more determined than ever to repeat his actions of the 1904 campaign, when Judge Alton B. Parker made an unsuccessful attempt-to beat .Theodore Roosevelt for the presidency. Then Bryan, who had had a taste of being a presidential candidate, and whose high hopes never lagged, passed almost the entire cam

paign sulking, emerging only to make a few lukewarm speeches that did

Judge Parker more harm than good.

Bryan greeted reporters Sunday night with the statement that he had nothing to say about national politics. All efforts to induce him to change

his mind failed, Indicating that he has

not recovered from his disappointment

at the action of the San Francisco convention in nominating Governor

James M. Cox. From Bryan's attitude today, it Is

assumed that he Intends to sulk in

his tent throughout the eampaiQi and

let Governor Cox rise or fall, certainly

without aid. and probably without hindrance.

The real purpose of Bryan's visit

here. It is believed. Is to confer with officials of the Anti-Saloon league in connection with the International congress against alcoholism to be con

ducted here this month.

Dinner Stories

The agent, while he went to the cot tape to collect his employer's rent, left his horse at the gate in the charge of a friend, who. happened that day to be accompanying him on his rounds. The latter became engrossed in conversation with a small boy of the family. "Are you sure," he a6ked at length, "that you are only nine years old? I really think there must be some mistake." The boy was positive. To make doubly sure, however, he called out to his mother, and asked for confirmation: of his statement. The mother's, reply left no further room for doubt For a moment there was silence, then he asked: "Say.-mi&ter,-what made you think me more thannlne years old?" "I didn't," was the reply. "What

ana muscle was sore and stiff." said

Mr. Herman Hollaway, of East 28th Street, Anderson, Ind. "My bowels were daily constipated and my liver quite sluggish which often gave me a dizzy feeling and headaches. I had to be careful about my eating or I'd suffer afterwards from gas In my stomach and griping pains. I was so nervous I couldn't sleep sound. "Ive finished the third bottle of Dreco and it's the first time in a year I've been free from pain. My arms, shoulders, knees and ankles are no longer swollen or painful and my back is supple so I can bend over at will. My bowels act regular, liver has been cleansed so that I never get dizzy. I sleep sound and my stomach Is free from gas and nausea. Dreco has done a lot for me and I don't hesitate to speak a good word for it." All druggists now sell Dreco and it is being especially introduced in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite's seven drug stores. Advertisement.
