Sellfng His Services Prof. John O. Hall, Democrat' or Republican, if either party saw fit to hire him, has' been kicked out of his snap since Senator New read the overture-which the professor made to the Republican national committee. The Democrats had outbid the Republicans, and Hall, secure in what he believed, to be a nice financial berth, must have had a rude awakening when the Democrats ousted him. Hall presents an interesting case of a person selling his political affiliations to the party that can bid the most. He is an example of the practice which the senate campaign expense investigating committee is trying to break up. Hall is a Scandinavian and was head of the Democratic bureau which sought votes among Americans of this origin. In his letter to the Republican leaders, Hall said he did not believe in the Democratic cause, xbut evidently , the price

they Were willing to pay for his services out

weighed the consideration. Politics is far from being a parlor same

Both sides will go far to enlist men for their cause. It does not reflect very highly to the

credit of either, of them when they engage in

devious methods to influence the political sentiment of portions of bur population. If the investigation under way now at Chicago does nothing more than to check an abuse of campaign finances, it will have accomplished wonders. The legitimate collection and expenditure of money for campaign purposes cannot be assailed by the reformer. The country at large is not seriously disturbed by charges that the election will be brought and that corrupt use of

the money is planned. But now and then exam

ples of a questionable expenditure are raised, the

Hall incident illustrating the point. Gopd citizen

ship will be furthered if both parties eliminate

methods of this kind.

So far, the Republicans have been on the car

pet. The Democrats are getting their turn now:

"There need be no fear that the" Democrats

will not be called on for the fullest information

in regard to their financial operations," says the

Indianapolis News.

"No one but a hopeless innocent will believe that they are characterized by any special sen

sitiveness in regard to money for campaign purposes. Indeed, a letter has recently been pub

lished, purporting to come from the national

committee, in which was outlined a very comprehensive-organization for money-raising purposes. It does not seem to have been very effective as yet, but that is not the fault of the men who devised the plan. The people can, we think, be sure that the senate committee will go to the bottom of the matter. In the first place, the situation has developed to such an extent as to make it necessary for it to do this. In the second place, the men who compose the committee have given every indication of an honest

desire to get at the truth. For the present, it might "be well for the parties to the controversy to be a little more chary in the use of the word liar."

Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams

GLIMPSES AND TOUCHES Years are merely means of measuring. They do not always truly express youth for youth often grasps upon age before it has hardly awakened. And so may age but express a full and flowered youth. But Just to touch life here and there just to get a glimpse every once in a while of the beauties anr glories of the only life we really know about, this is to take upon one's self a specie of tragedy. What a thing to writfc across one's life: "He lived he did he saw!" To know happiness we must touch It feel it for a long time. To get the meaning of our stay among the wonders of the everyday we must get more than a glimpse or a glance. Ulysses at the close of his great career, proudly exclaimed: "I am a part of all that I have met." That is success. We must constantly take upon new views, new perspectives, new attitudes. We must know as we go. But we must not lose our cast through neglect and blindness. We must keep on learning and absorbing all the time digging deeper if we do not strike real "pay ore" at first. If we were satisfied merely to get glimpses and momentarily pleasures out of those whom we love, we would grow lonelier and lonelier and soon become sour and deserted. Let us work with great heart. Let us aspire for the high things. Let us love deeply and with warm sincerity. Let us not pass by the big prizes because they cost .long effort and maybe great sacrifice. Let us get MORE than the glimpses and touches!

the lady hinted to his honor' that one of these days she might bring the matter Into court. The other day, however, encountering the judge on the street, she buttonholed him, saying: "Judge, I i am so sorry I said all those things about my husband. He can go to the club all he wants to and I will never say a word." "Why the change of heart ?", asked White, curiously. "Well, the other night a burglar broke into the house and my husband laid him out with a poker. I had heard that he was a poker expert, and now I understand. The dear boy has been spending his nights preparing for just such an emergency." A little girl who had been exceedingly naughty had been punished. The incident was then dropped. An hour later the mother, feeling that it was her duty to improve the moral lesson of the occasion, said: "Now, Doris, what are you most ashamed of?" The answer was unexpected, and bore no relation to the late offense "Squeaky boots in church," said Doris and she had the sympathy of everybody present.

FEELS LIKE NEW WOMAN SINCE

TAKING TRUTONA Fort Wayne Resident Declares Perfect Tonic Relieved Her From Trouble

FORT WAYNE, Ind., Sept, 3 "I feel exactly like a new woman, and even my neighbors have noticed a change in my disposition, since I've taken Trutona," Mrs. Stella Robinson, a well-known Fort Wayne woman, who lives at 215 Superior street, happily told the Trutona representative who called upon her a few days ago. "I was suffering from nervousness and indigestion," she continued, "and

all the medicines I tried eeemed unable to reach my trouble. I was so constipated, my bowels .would go tor as long as four days without an action, and' at times a lump seemed to form In my stomach, just like lead. I just had to force, down every bite of my food, and if I ate a big meal, I would become bloated, and suffer terribly.

I-was so nervous that anyone walking

across the floor caused me to jump.

Naturally, I couldn't sleep well at

night."

"Trutona seemed to give me relief, after the first few doses and now my bowels are getting more regular every day. I'm not the least bit nervous any -more either. And sleep well, I sleep as sound aa a child now. I eat like a pig, too; it seems that I can't

get enough to eat, and I'm hungry all the time."

"But the best of all, I can eat any

thing I care for now, and I don't have to suffer any of the former bad aftereffects It's just as I said, I simply feel like a new woman since I've taken the Perfect Tonic, and I can't say enough for this wonderful medicine." Trutona is sold in Richmond at Quigley's Drug Stores. Advertisement.
