The Diary of an Engaged Girl By Phyllis PMIIlpa

Well, we did a powerful lot of shopping, and mother really did buy me some very fetching evening wraps, plus some wonderful furs, that made me hug her right in the shop. She is so good to me specially now. Guess it's because she knows that she is going to lose me soon, and all that. Oh, I forgot to say that I told Aunt Cecilia about meeting Cecil; and it upset her no end, much to my surprise. I finally asked her quite peevishly why she was so worried just because poor old Cecil was on the spot. And she made answer, most mysteriously, "That's Just it; he is on the spot!" Now I ask you, isn't that an extraordinary remark from a sane woman? "And you're such an impulsive child," was another of her erratic reminders, to my young self. But of course I soon realized that it was not the slightest use in the world to argue with a relative a female relative, who Is about to be married. I know when to stop, I do. Just as soon as we had finished our shopping tour, mother and I hied us to a comfy tea shop, and had several cups of liquid amber. That's just what tea is in this country, the most delicious and fragrant beverage imaginable. We lingered over this ceremony, for we were both tired, and then at five-thirty I remembered . that I was due in Kensington Gardens at six. So I made the best excuse I could to mater, and after seeing her into a taxi, breezed away. Cecil was waiting for me, under our friendly oak tree, all smiles. He looked a different man from the one I had found there in that spot just twentyfour hours earlier. Youth does recuperate quickly, without a doubt; that's why it dissipates so! His smile at the sight ofme was most cheering, I must say, for I have been so long without the warming nmile of a man that Cecil's looked pnd semed particularly grateful to me. Anyhow we are cousins'after all and have seen enough of each other to feel perfectly at home with thee find me and that's a factor in itpelf. It was another gorgeous sunset, and we were like two kids, just full of laughter and gladness. It did seem pood to be with Cecil, after all. And lie does seem to understand me pretty well. Of course he wanted to know the 1 ear-on for my down-heartedness, and in the end I told him, for after all he had not held back any confidences from me, and I felt that I should trust him. just as he had done me. ,' When I told him of having received but two scrappy notes from Jack in tjie past two weeks or more, and of not having received any letter at all on this last steamer, which brought Jeffry, and all that, he was very thoughtful and sympathetic. Told me rot to worry unnecessarily, that there vere probably a batch of letters on the way now, and that nothing was wrong or I would have had a cable. I pointed out to him that I did not think that anything was wrong with Jack's health or anything like that. Nay, much sadder were my feminine suspicions and then it came out, of course, all about Barbara being there, and all my worst thoughts about that young person. Cecil lauhed when I had finished and ar.sured me that if Jack could be attracted to that foolish creature. Barbara, more than he was to a girl like me, I was well rid of him. But such a thing was impossible! "Besides cousins are not so dangerous to each other as all that. Take you and me, for instance. You don't care a tinker's cuss

"I don't mind telling anybody that the new medicine Dreco has done me a lot of good and I'm glad that I heard about it and bought a bottle," said Mrs. Maggie Rosey of 709 South Lafountain St., Kokomo, Ind. "I've suffered an awful lot from constipation, nervousness, poor sleep, no appetite and gas in my stomach. .This gas often got so bad that it pressed against my heart, causing shortness of breath and hard breathing. .My kidneys often annoyed me and I'd have terrible backache so that I could f iik. hardlv swftn iin the hru

"I read what Dreco did for a lady here in town and got a bottle. It certainly was money well spent for my constipation is entirely relieved, no more gas forms in my stomach, nor presses against my heart. I have a good appetite, my nerves are quieted so that I sleep well, and the little catarrh that has bothered me is gone. Dreco has built me up and I'm feeling better than in years." All druggists now sell Dreco and it is being especially introduced in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite's seven drug stores. Advertisement.

for me; never have telt any sort of even a pasiag uuuu know, so you can prove the folly c your suspicions by remembering this.' I blushed scarlet all over at this re mark, and I saw Cecil's eyes widen ing in surprise. But he never indicatec in. any way that he had noticed same I was thinking of some of his kisses on the beach at Long Island in the monlight! He had evidently forgotten them, as is the way with men. Heart Problems

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl 21, and am engaged as well as in lov with the one man of my heart, and the only one I can truly love, as I have tried many. He is a fine fellow of 23 years and well-liked by my parents. He came back from service last October and stayed at our home for two weeks. Then he left for his home in Denver, where he has a fine position We had the date set for the next June (1920) and he really seemed anxious that we should marry. He wrote every week. or oftener, saying he could hardly wait until June came, but seeing that I could hardly get ready in that time, I asked his advice on changing the date to September (1920). Since then I have received very few letters from him, but the ones I do receive are as dear as ever and he writes he Is too busy to write very often. It seems to me he could find time to write. I am sure he is writing the truth, because he is a man of unquestioned character. Do you think I should have asked his advice on changing the date as I did? He seems to. think my folks don't want me to marry him and ail I can write does not convince him that they like him. Do you think it could be our ten months' separation that has made him forget about me? I could never forget him. Please tell me what I should do. DOUBTFUL. Men and women love in a different way. Most women are faithful in writing to the man they love, while many men feel little responsibility in regard to their end of the correspondence. Yes, I believe that the 10 months' separation has made a difference. Probably it has not made the young man love you less, but in that time he- has found deep interest in his work and he no longer thinks so much about letter writing. If he still counts on a September wedding, stop worrying. You must judge from his letters. If they show a sincere love for you, you may be sure he is true, but not a faithful letter writer. If, however, he seems to be searching for a way to get out of a September wedding, you would have reason to doubt his love. I thing it was all right for you to ask his advice about changing the date of the wedding.

TYPHOON SWEEPS MANILLA. MANILLA, Sept. 3. The city was in darkness again last night following a typhoon which prostrated power and light wires, and forced suspension of street car and other traffic. Officials feared that many would be electrocuted if the current was turned on while a tangled mass of wires and fallen trees remain in the streets.

What's in a Name (Copyright)

KATRINA. Few of us are aware that Katrina, one of our most common names, is really Slovak. Though it appears as Katrine in England," and Bavaria, the Slovac is the only language in which Katrina is officially recorder. It means "pure" and comes originally from the Latin Catharina, the virgin

martyr of Alexandria whose life story is supplied by half-allegorical legend. The sweet saint of history, whose name has been immortalized in all countries, was also called . Katharina. Her wisdom, her heavenly espousale, her rejection of the suit of Maximus, the destruction of the wheels that would have torn her to pieces, and her final martyrdom by the sword have been recorded in the literature of every land. Santa Caterlna of Sienna, whose influence was one of the most powerful in the Middle Ages, acused her name to be given a prominent place in history since she Imagined that she was the prototype, of the original saintly martyr. From Catherina to Katerina was an easy step, though many of the European countries reached it by way of the more involved Katherlna, which still persists in modern times. Katrina, however, is preferable and much more popular in this country. The turquoise is Katrina's tailsmanic gem. It is believed to bring hef happiness in love and to protect her from deceitful friends or admirers. Tuesday is her lucky day and 1 her lucky number.

(Copyright. 1920. by The Wheeler ' Syndicate, Inc.) A perfect lover, who can find one? Lo, his price is above gasoline and sugar, and what maiden would not cheerfully pay a luxury tax for such an one? . Behold, there came a damsel unto me, saying: "Alas, oh Woman of Wisdom, where shall I find a Perfect Lover even one who will not tread upon my sensibilities, nor shatter my romantic ideals, nor rob me of mine illusions? "Yea, where shall I find a man so devoted that his eye will not brighten at the approach of another woman, nor his cheek glow at the flatteries of sirens and blondes and summer widows? "Where shall I find a man so subtle that he will talk love rather than golf when we are alone in the moonlight; and golf rather than love when we are in a canoe? "Where shall I find a man bo adoring that he will not try to kiss me without first telling me that he loveth me; nor seek to make me con-

feas my love before asking for it? "Where shall I find a man so magnanimous that he will consider my 'beauty sleep.' and arise from his place beside me, and depart at the striking of eleven? "Where shall I find a man so polished and so gallant that, after six months of courtship, be will treat me a politely as he would a total stranger? "Where shall I find a man so tactful that he will not praise another woman in my presence, bo considerate that he will not offer to read poetry aloud to me, and so intelligent that he will not insist upon doing all my thinking for me? "Where shall I find a man so generous that he -would share, not only his last dollar and his last crust, but even his last cigarette and his morning newspaper with me? "Where shall I find a man so tenderhearted that he would rob a bank, rather, than rob me of my vanity, end commit a capital crime rather than do aught to hurt my pride? "For, verily, verily, until I find euch an one, I shall remain a spinster!" And when I had heard her,- I took the damsel by the hand, and pointed to a high shelf, saying: "Lo, thou Simple One, there shalt thou find thy perfect lover! "There, only, shalt thou find the paragon of whom thou dreamest even between the covers of a Richard .Harding Davis novel, a Harold Bell Wright thriller, a Robert Chambers best-seller and an Elinor Glynn 'shocker'! "Yea, get thee to a motion-picture theatre 1 "For, outside of these, not even an Ouija board can discover him! "Therefore, I charge thee, go purchase thyself a bachelor flat, a latchkey and a parrot. "For, if thou wilt wed no other, thou hast committed thyself to eternal single blessedness. "And thy middle name is 'Unplucked Flower'!" Selah.
