The Diary of an Engaged Girl By Phyllis PMItla
September 4th Slept fine last night and got up feeling a hundred per cent better than I have for some time. Actually laughed before my breakfast, which I haven't done for three -whole days now. The very eight of me seemed to tickle mother all to pieces, and after my second cup of coffee she asked me if I'd go shopping with her a bit later. I have taken a secret vow to try to be nicer all round on this trip, so, of course, I said, "I'd just love to," which caused the dear lady to almost roll off her seat, I think. Lind-
sey "just loving to go shopping." It seemed like the millenium. "My little girl Is certainly in better spirits today than she has been in a long time," said mother happily, as she passed me "The Daily Express" and a piece of hot toast. "I do feel much better, mother, dear, and I am sorry that I was so
hateful and grumpy to you yesterday. I really do love you and appreciate all you are doing for me, honor bright, hope to die, cross my heart, and " Aunt Cecilia trailed in just then, and we had to stop our mutual admiration conversation and hear all the news from her and concerning her. Well, it was not long before we got the news, just about the end of her mouthful of coffee, and it Is as foretold. The marriage will take place in two weeks, and that's as soon as it can. You should have seen the laughs and blushes upon aunty's cheeks, forsooth very charming, I can assure you. And from the tragic look in her eyes at the words of "two weeks" anybody'd have thought that she was saying two years. So it will be in some quaint little Eglise in sunny France,
just as I predicted, and I am almost
envious and not a bit ashamed of it, either. Aunt Cecilia only laughed at
me when I told her how I felt, and lold me I'd be doing the same thing
before three months were over! But three months are three ages! (sometimes).
Well, we at and talked the whole
thing over, and backwards and for
wards for quit a long time, at the breakfast table, and decided on the dress for the wedding a traveling costume it is to be, of course, for they start for the Alps . immediately after the ceremony. It's to be a lovely
peachy-colored suit and hat to match
that aunty bought for herself in
Bond street, which is adorably becoming to her style of beauty. And
then 1 made her blush tremendously when I asked if she had quite finished all of her trousseau such things as
lingerie, and the like. She changed the subject as soon as she had airily said.' "Oh, yes," but it did amuse me. Whfn we had finished talking I
Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am 24 years of age. Seven years ago I left nsy old home town and came to this part of the state. When I left there I was deeply in love with a girl and I swore to be her friend as long as I lived. We have corresponded together all these years, and I find that I still love her with a stronger love than ever. Two weeks ago I got a telephone message from a neighboring town, sent by her, asking me to come there and meet her. When I met her she confided in me that it would help her cut of a dfficulty if I would marry her. She asked me to be loyal to her. I want to marry her because I love her dearly and she loves me. My folks are against it. It is not that she is a bad girl, as she is not.
Her difficulty has not resulted from any fault of hers, but it is the reason mv folks object. Please give me your point of view. Shall I go against the wishes of m folks and let love conquer? I wis i to stay loyal to her and stick to hr no matter what happens. Mv folks think I have the wrong idea. The girl is 21 years of age. LONESOME LUKE. Let love conquer if you are suro your feeling is love and not the worshiping of an ideal. You are a few years younger than I feel a man rhould be to make his choice of a life compainion, but that should not stand in the way of your happiness ( if you use judgment. How will you feel . 10 years from now? Will you be happier if you have stood by the girl in her difi'i rulty? Will you have contentment of mind if you know you have failed to help? Are you sure that she is nr. loyal to you as you are to her? I ,- believe you are the only one to work . out your own problem. Be true to yourself and if you are doing what you feel to be right, the fact that your parents object should not alter .your decision. Do not treat their . reasons lightly. Much unhappiness; , could be spared if children would heed ' the mature viewpoints of their par- ; rnts. On the other hand, parents sometimes err, and by their advice, stand in the way of great happines3 for their children.

begged mother to wait till the afternoon for our grand tour, as I was dying to go to aunty's room and have a gab-fest with her one of the real kind. She confessed that she was more madly in love with Jeffry than ever before even more than she was 12 years ago! And that he seemed to be in the same state of mind about her; hence the sudden but prompt decision to hasten the marriage. "And, oh, Lindsey, to think, just to think, that in two weeks' time I shall be a bride, and Jeffry all my own. It's too wonderful for words, and to think that we shall dream our way through some of those white-capped mountains that he knows so well, and loves. It seems like a fairy-tale." Then she showed me some of the
last of the many dainty negligees that
she has been buying here in London, and I tried to advise her how and
when to wear each one, until she was
quite purple in the face from laughing. That aunt of mine is so happy these days that she laughs at everything and nothing! Just as we were in the midst of an animated exchange of compliments, for Jeffry and Jack, mother bustled in to remind me of our engagement, and also that two hours had gone by since we left the breakfast table. MUSICAL ROCKS FOUND IN PENNSYLVANIA, TUNEFUL (Detroit News) A few miles from Pottstown, Pa., or about 45 miles from Philadelphia are to be found the only musical rocks in this country if not the whole world. They are strewn over half an ucre on the top of a hill overlookfng the
Schuylkill Valley, some lying loose, some being embedded deepfy in the ground, some weighing sevnral tons, L
" " " . . . ...wUOa ..v. f up and carried away in the, hand. They are of a uniform dark brown color, showing unmistakable traces of iron, and never collect either moss or lichens-as most rocks do neither do any wild plants or weeds grow near them, nor will any ivy grow over them. When struck with ta hammer or other metallic instrument they respond with a clear resonant note like a bell. The larger the rock struck the louder and clearer the bell note, Uie ringing of the big rocks beins heard quite plainly across the vaJIey. A musician after a little practice is able to produce the notes of the scale on them in a manner similar to the xylophone. When small rocks are carried away and struck elsewhere they refuse to ring, and this fact leads many to believe that the ground underneath the rocks is formed like a huge sounding board, while the loose masses of granite have been cunningly arranged by the hand of nature to refract sound in such a way asr to produce the ringing notes.

Boy Didn't Like Candy-
Only Ate 46 Sticks Rockland (Me.) Opinion We Insert here the most incredible
newspaper story that was ever reported from Waldoboro, but It is neverthe
less true and can be verified by several witnesses. Ralph Eugley, of Gross
Neck, a good looking, robust youth; of 18 years, stated at Aaron Nash's, store that the night previous he had eaten 40 large apples, v, . . All the men present doubted this
herculean - accomplishment whereon young Eugley passed out the following challenge, to wit, that he would eat 40 large sticks of rich chocolate candy. If he could do this 'the crowd was to pay the bill, if not, he would settle it himself. This was promptly agreed to and he was allowed an hour to do the job.
Operations were immediately begun, the young man standing by the counter, where his maneuvers could be seen, so that no slight of hand business could be put on. He did the job in 26 minutes, but said he did not have enough of them. Six more sticks were brought, which he consumed with the same relish as the first.. : He then smoked a cigar, bowed his thanks to the crowd for their hospitality and took bis leave.
