G.O.P. OF MICHIGAN HAS FIELD OF NINE TO PICK GOVERNOR
Detroit, Mich., Aug. 31. There are nine candidates for the Republican nomination for governor in the Mich igan primaries, and a large field of Republican candidates for nomination in the 13 congressional districts. The Democrats have entered only one candidate for the governorship and lieutenant governorship and one nominee for each congressional district. Four of the would-be nominees for congress are women, three Republi cans and one Democrat. The nine candidates for Republican nomination for governor are: Alex J. Groesbeck, attorney general; Luren D Dickinson, lieutenant governor; Milo D. Campbell, choice of the farmers organizations: Horatio S. Earle, former stte highwy commissioner; Frederick C. Martindale, former secretary of state; Charles S. Mott, former mayor of Flint; Cassius L. Glasgew, a member of the state railroad commitfion; Fjank B. Leland, regent of tho University -of Michigan, and James Hamilton, of Detroit. Ha No Opposition Former Governor Woodbridge N. Ferris is the unopposed Democratic candidate. Michigan has 13 congressmen of whom one is a Democrat and 12 are Republicans; although the Republican number has been lessened by one by the death of Charles A. Nichols. Three representatives, Frank E. Doremus, Democrat; J." M. C. Smith, and Edward L. Hamilton. Republicans, are not candidates for renomination. Three other Republican representatives, Patrick H. Kelly, Louis C. Crampton and Frank D. Scott, are unopposed in the Republican primary. Fordney is Opposed. Representative Joseph W. Fordney, chairman of the house ways and means committee is opposed by Benjamin F. Reed and Emory Townsend, of Saginaw. The women candidates for nomination are: Helen C. Statler, Kalamazoo; Mrs. Aleta Wheeler and Edith Watkins Dunk, all Republicans. Maude W. Glasner, of Hastings, is an aspirant for Democratic nomination. The Farmer-Labor party and the Liberal party each have candidates for nomination in three congressional districts, while the Socialists have candidates in four of the districts. DRIVE IS REPULSED; AMERICAN DRINK FAILS IN LONDON LONDON, Aug. 31 The great American cocktail offensive, directed against London, has failed. The old-time English saloons put up a heavy whisky-and-soda barrage before which the New York storm troops, although cleverly led, beat a disorderly retreat. The American attack was conducted by unemployed Manhattan bartenders. They were confident that they would win with "liquid fire," but their propaganda system was weak, and the forces of the Scottish distilleries won an easy victory without having to call out the English beer and Irish stout reserves. In issuing an official admission of defeat, Harry Craddock, late of New York, and now of London, says: "My New York friends cannot break into this town. The Englishman prefers a long drink. He likes to sip his whisky-and-soda, not to toss it off quickly. For that reason he cannot take to cocktails. Later he may change; it's all a matter of education." Craddock has 200 cocktails on his wine list, but 90 per cent of his customers are Americans. NEFF WINS RACE TO HEAD TEXAS DEMOCRATIC TICKET DALLAS, Tex.. Tug. 31. Pat M. Neff, of Waco, led Joseph W. Bailey, former United States senator for Texas, by 77,383 votes for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, according to the final telegraphic report of the Texas election bureau. The figures were: Neff. 244,445; Bailey, 167,652. The figures represented partial and complete returns from 226 counties and and estimated 75 per cent of the total vote. Lynch Davidson, of Houston, appears to be the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, defeating W. A. Johnson, who holds that office. For associate justice of the supreme court, William Pierson, of Greenville, has a lead of about 50,000 over William E. Hawkins, now in office.
