WORLD LEAGUE SEEN AS ONLY SOLUTION BY DR. A. D. REES

The general world situation was summed up by Dr. Arthur D. Rees, of the University of Pennsylvania, In his last lecture Friday afternoon. The talk was attended by a large crowd, which has been increasing each day for his lectures. Dr. Rees Is the possessor of a remarkable fund of facts in reference o political and economical conditions

11 over the world, both past and present, and his talks were interesting ind enlightening. The great struggle in the world now is for oil, said the speaker. The secret movements of troops in Mesapotamia can be accounted for In that Mesapotamia, spell3 oil. Oil is needed by the world and, come arrangements should be made whereby the matter can be settled amicably. If Armenia had had some commercial attractions, she would not have suffered as she has. As it is, the Americans in Armenia are known only for their charity, schools, and Christianity. "The Armenians prefer an Ameri

can mandate," he said, "and if it were:

to be given to us the thing for us to do would be to go into -the country and develop some sort of commercial enterprise. We must prevent another Poland in the East and see that Armenia gets a boundary line on the Mediterranean Sea." Says Britain is Satisfied

In particular reference to Great!

Britain and the league of nations, Dr. Hees said: "The foreign policy of Great Brittain represents the struggle between the east and the west. The external and interior policies of Great Britain are not alike. "The interior policy has always been progressive and dfmocratic. But because of the power of the cabinet to make sreretarial treaties without considering parliament the foreign policies have not yet been democratized to the extent that the home policy has." History of the aggressions of England in the East and events leading up to the occupation of Constantinople. Mesapotamia and her policy in

regard to the Turk wore all summed j up by Dr. Rees. In reference to Lloyd ; George, he said: j Says Premier Is Bully. I "Lloyd George wants to boss, to ! 'reign supremo. Ho has more power; than any man in the world today and lie wants to keep supreme command in i order to operate. He is in command ; of the supreme council, and he bosses ; Millerand. . "If the league of nations is to func-, tion properly the supreme council! must be abolished. The council does not want the league. The league is no good now, but it is an instrument ! that can be used. But I believe rhat all international matters, large and small, should be in fhe control of the' league. The struggle between the ! East and the West can be settled by :

the league of nations. America Must Enter. America should enter the league. It will not destroy patriotism. We can

make the covenant amount to some- j thing. If we uphold our national sov- j ereignty as we always have "it will be i the league way. j "Mr. Wilson did not refuse sugges-1 tions of other Americans in the mat- j ter of the covenant. He made changes i at the advice of Mr. Root, Mr. Lodge,' Mr. Borah, Mr. Reed and others. We must enter the league and see that all problems are settled in the league and that the mandates are carried out." 1 In conclusion, Dr. Roes said that if ! America knew the truth about the Eu-l

ropean situation she would change her attitude toward the league. The great step toward international harmony could- be attained through the league because all wars have been precipi

tated as the last one was, by money, and have been economical and all economical questions would be settled by the league. One of the finest adjuncts of the league is already completed, said Dr. Rees, and that is the world court which Mr. Root has helped to organize.

"PRINCE CHAP" READ BY MISS M. PENICK

"The Pince Chap," a play in three acts, was read at the Richmond Chautauqua Friday evening, by Miss Margaret J. Penick. dramatic reader, who appeared here one year ago. The play is an interesting one in which it was possible for Miss Penick to display her versatility. Her voice was pleasing and the performance was an entertaining one. The Bohemian orchestra gave its fourth and last concert Friday eve

ning. The popularity of this organization and the ability of its personnel can be judged by the fact that despite the threatening storm at the time of the performance, the crowd remained in the big tent instead of trying to get home in order to avoid the storm.

M'COMB WILL SPEAK ON IRISH SQUABBLE Much interest is being manifested in the lecture to be given Sunday evening by the platform manager, Dr. C. Jeffares McComb, who will talk on the "Sinn Fein." Dr. McComb is a good sport. He is one of the best platform managers that the Richmond Chautauqua has ever had. He knows just what to do and when to do it and how long to do it. He has a funny supply of jokes and when he gets them off with his Irish accent the audience roars. In the mornings of next week Dr.

McComb will give a series of lectures on the Bible.

"PUSSYFOOT", SUNDAY I AFTERNOON SPEAKER "Pussyfoo't" Jonnson Is the Chautauqua hadliner for Sunday after-) noon. The Welsh Glee club singers,1 a double male quartet, will appear in ' the prelude Sunday afternoon and in I concert Sunday at 8 p. m. j
