HISTORIC MARNE MILLS BURN: BUILT IN ELEVENTH CENTURY (The London Mail.) One of the most historic landmarks , connected with the glorious- part taken by the British army In first battle of the Marne in 1914, and one of France's finest artistic jewels, was destroyed the other day when fire rased to -the water's edge the mills over the River Marne at Meaux, where they had etooJ since the 11th century. The mills, five in number, wero built on piles over the River Marne and were visited yearly by thousands of tourists. Four of them had passed unscathed through the turmoil of th great war. When Sir Johii French's "contemptibles" retired across the Marne In September, 1914, they spared the historic mills, blowing up only the first arch of the bridge on wnicn they were built, and with the turn of the tide of victory, Von Kluck's troops never got near enough to destroy them. The fire was discovered in the early morning hours by a watchman, who noticed e parks rising from one of the mills. He at once gave the alarm and soon the whole town of Meaux was gathered in the streets watching great columns of sparks rising skyward from the wooden structures packed with blazing grain, while the firemen strove vainly to fight the flames. In a few hours all that remained of these gems of "French medieval architecture was a few blackened stumps sticking out of the waters of the Marne, and a heap of debris in the center of the river.
