NATION'S BUSINESS HOLDS STEADILY ON COURSE, IS BELIEF New York Journal of Commerce.
The Inquiry Into business conditions ; conducted by this newspaper and pub-
lished during the past week furnishes a fair cross section of opinion among influential factors in some of the more important branches of trade. There is a general, correspondence in the information afforded which
shows uniformity and suggests strongly that the nation is passing definitely j thru the uncertainties which have; been noted from time to time during j recent months. All this is encourag-.
ing and seems to correspond with the reports from many other sources which have lately come to hand. , As the best basis for optimism the facts respecting our agricultural and other productive output .may be cited. There is now god reason to expect crops up. to the general average of the past few years in most lines, and In some cases well above it. Prices are good, and while there is some tendency .to readjust the exorbitant values that have existed in months past this must be regarded as wholesome rather than the reverse. It would, indeed, be a regrettable thing if in time of plenty food values were advancing Instead of receding as they should. There will be a full return to the farmer and his buying power shows every indication of sustaining itself well in most parts of the country. Manufacturers Holding Pace. Coupled with this general situation in the productive basis of the nation is to be counted the fact that manufacturing, all things considered, is holding its own well. There was a good deal of talk in the spring to the effect that production in manufacturing lines had fallen off, a statement which has been shown by facts to be largely baseless. Such Ptatistics are not fuily up to date, due to the difficulty of getting conclusive returns that are more or less behind-hand at any given time. There has been some suspension in a certain number of lines, and this will show as the new figures come forward. On the other hand there has been revival in several, and it may be broadly stated that both in derived industries and in agriculture there is an encouraging state of things.
It is in building and the allies lines that there is perhaps the least satisfactory outlook. We are far behind on accommodations in housing and a like case exists abroad. This is a complex rroblem, partly due to taxation. The community will not be speedily relieved, but will only gradually re
cover from its present troubles. Measures are now, however, in process for the improvement of some of the conditions that are most troublesome end it may reasonably be expected that there will be a change for the better befor? long. From the investment standpoint and this has its direct bearing not only upon the buildins industry but upon any business which requires a large fixed capital there are seriou3 problems to be met. Lack of Capital Obstacle. It will be a good while before the lack of capital which now exists is rvercome and during this transition period there will inevitably be more or less suffering or hardship due to readjustment of prices and the alterations in demand and supply which follow upon all such changes. Sound observers are now of the opinion that this state of things will not continue in any ncute form for an unduly long time. It is, however, true ijiat there is demand fo capital in many directions, with lack of saving or real investment, and that in consequence there will have to be high rater- of return upon money. This necessarily furnishes somewhat of a handicap which nusiness will have to meet. Such forecasts are not always accurate, but there is the best of reasons for b"lievintr in the correctness of their general trend.
Sizes Up Women; Dr. Stewart Thinks She Should Stav "Put" in the Home
"Woman" was the subject of the lec-1 ture given Monday evening at the Richmond Chautauqua by George K Stuart, of Birmingham, Ala., who substituted in the place of Dr. Tindley, unable to appear. "This is distinctly a woman's age." said the snvaker. "Our civilization is due to' the standard of woman; when woman's standard is low, civilization is low; where it is high, so is civill zation, and woman's standard in Amer ica during the past century has been higher than any other in the world. "In France," he continued, "woman in a toy; in Germany she is a woman,
in England she is a lady and in America she is wife, mother and daughter. Woman is smarter than a great many men. Her intelligence is not to be questioned in so far as her casting the ballot is concerned. She has as much right to cast a ballot as she has to buy a postage stamp and mail a letter. There is no impropriety in her voting.
"To say that every woman ought to
marry is talking nonsense. God meant
that some women should not marry and I admire some of them who do
not, rather than criticize them, when
there are so many men in the world
who are not fit to marry. Has Ability In Professions.
"To question a woman's ability in medicine, pedagogy, law, etc., is not possible, because she has proved the
test in all of these things. Woman works everywhere, but where is her right place? God designed her to be the maker of the home, and when the woman leaves the home the world is fated. . I fear that the modern move ments will set her adrift and when she leaves the home she is leaving the hub for the rim. She has more movement but less power. "Man and woman were created by God and all species of life was created male and female, and the male was made the stronger. When God created the world he made the farm and the home. On the farm he put the male and in the home he placed the woman. Adam's curse was put on the farm, and Eve's curse in the home. "Although woman's mind is stronger than a man's she does not have so much of it. A woman never reasons
a thing out, but uses her instinct wth which she is endowed. Her mind was mado from minutia." Adanacs Give Prelude. The prelude to the evening's lectura was given by the Adanac quartet, their last appearance. The program was made ud of request numbers. Among
j them was the "Invictus," sung by the
baritone, Harley Sherris, who delighted his audience wit han encore "Romeo in Georgia," a southern ballad. Mr. McDonald, basso, repeated tho "Horn." The last and most beautifully sung of all the numbers given by the
Indiana Brevities
quartet In their appearance here was "Good Bye." by Tosti.
