AYRSHIRE CATTLE ARE LEADERS AMONG HIGH GRADE MILKING HERDS

' By WILLIAM R. SANBORN Henderson's Betty, the beautifully marked Ayrshire cow, with a record of 14,246 pounds of milk in one year, is over 7 years old, and wa3 recently sold for $4,100. She was put up at the Second National Ayrshire sale at t : Springfield, Mass., at which an offer !" Ing of 44 head ; netted the various breeders $42,490, an average of $965. The Ayrshlres are of Scottish origin. They are middle-weight milkers. The mature cow ranges around 1,000 pounds. They are a mighty fine "fam- . lly cow." At the date of the printing of the - first American Ayrshire herd register, .1868. but 79 males and 217 females were recorded. These were entered

by 129 breeders, all from New England. The bulk of the Ayrshlres are found in the east but they are increasing in'Tavor in the west, notably so in Iowa, where there are now slightly more than 60 herds. The Iowa Btate college, has a herd of Ayrshires and its experience with this dairy breed is popularizing it in that state. V Sell For Big Sums. Addlngton Princess, consigned from Hill Top farm. Wheeling, West Vir

ginia, milked 79 pounds of milk per day while on the sale grounds, and eold for $1,400. Otterkill Roseleaf, a young cow, sold for $2,550. Roseleaf Is on test and in 113 days produced over 6,500 pounds of milk. Auchenbrain Hannah, 3rd. brought $2,400; Auohenbrain Ella, $2,100, and Willowmoor Crlstina, $1,160. Jean Armour's Big Kate sold for $2,100 and Barclay's White Llllv for $2,000. High Quality Milk. While Ayrshire men do not claim the greatest quantity of milk, they do talk quality and richness. Ayrshire cattle show hlrth and breeding, and the value of pure blood strains in the milking herd. That their care and keep is more costly than that of "common" cows which are properly looked after, may be doubted. But that they produce from twice to five times the amount of milk and butterfat, is a matter of record. Average Weights of Cows. The Jersey Is the lightest of all the milking breeds; a mature cow weighing about 900 pounds. The Ayrshire will weigh 1,000 pounds: the Guernsey, 1,100 to 1,200; the Brown Swiss, 1,200 to 1,250; milking Shorthorns 1,200 to 1.350; while the HolsteinFrlesan often weighs from 1,500 to 1,600 pounds at maturity. As a food producer the Holsteln leads all the dairy breeds.

The Farm and the Farmer By William R. Sanborn

A number of Wayne and Preble elevator men held the impression up to harvest days that there was considerable corn, also quite a little old wheat, back in farmers' bins. This seems to have been true, for several are report-; Ing corn coming in now, Ben Price1 stating that as much corn as wheat had come-in at one elevator .within the week.- Two other Wayne men say they will begin moving corn shortly, but are now reserving all 6pace for small grain. Camden has been shipping out corn, mostly at $1.45 per bushel. The Buckeye line folks were paying $1.40 for corn on Thursday; also $2.35 for number 2 wheat and 58 cents for oats. There is less complaint of lack of cars at most points, but at others, elevators are still short of,, needed supply. Straughn is full to the gables and so is New Madison, while West Manchester, New Lisbon, Eaton, Kitchell, Greensfork, and some other reporting points said that since receipts

were falling off, they have had all the cars they needed Alexander Brothers, threshers "at Fountain City, report threshing three crops on Thursday, between daylight and dark, all oats. This closed Che season with one machine, and the engine was sent on to Lynn in the evening, to help out in oats up there The other Alexander separator will wind up Its labors in a very few days The machine which had just closed its circuit had threshed out 51 crops, some of them of considerable acreage. Farmers around Lynn have had more rain than those near Fountain City, Mr. Alexander says, hence the delay in finishing, up oats threshing. Earl Adamson says this is the case and that several crops remained to be threshed from Tuesday on. Oliver Lafuze Has Fine Apples. Oliver Latuze, of Union county, does not estimate the ripening crop at over one-third of such crops, that of 1917 for example. That year they sold over 2,000 bushels of apples, right out of the orchard. Mr. Lafuze said that some apple trees of certain varieties, of which he has several, are not bearing this year, but that all which are fruiting will bear flue apples. Says, too, that he lias a good crop of plums, and that
