WANTS TO LIVE IN WASHINGTON AGAIN
Secretary of De La Haerta Doubtful About America's Conditions to Government (By Associated Press) MEXICO CITY, Aug. 18. Proposals reported to have been made by Bainbridge Colby, United States Secretary of State, a3 to conditions upon which recognition may be extended the present Mexican government may be rejected by Mexico, it is indicated in an interview with Miguel Alessio Robles, private secretary to Provisional President De La Huerta, printed in the newspaper Excelsior. "Mexico cannot accept instructions from another government regarding Its legislation" Senor Robles is quoted as saying in reference to the report that derogation of various Carranza decrees was wanted by the United States government. "Mexico, however, never has refused guarantees to foreign countries, and has made indemnity payments when they have been Justly due." A presidential commission will leave tonight for Lower California to arrange for Esteban Cantu to hand over to Luis M. Salazar the office of Governor of that state, according to an official bulletin issued late today. Agricultural machinery and school books requested by Francisco Villa, the former bandit leader, have been ordered sent to him by the government, the bulletin says.

THOMAS TAGGART IS BACK OF CAMPAIGN
Thomas Taggart, Democratic candidate for United States senator, has written to the Earlham college endowment fund campaign headquarters expressing hope for the success of the drive. He said that he had - often
felt that educational institutions of Indiana, from the colleges down to the country school house, had been neglected. His letter follows: "I understand that you are instituting a campaign
for increasing Earlham's endowment
by $500,000, and I want to congratulate you and your associates upon
your effort to secure this endowment, because I consider it necessary that schools and colleges should be thor
oughly equipped to render the best educational service. This not only applies to buildings for education and lectures fqr the students, but also for the purpose of paying sufficient salaries to enable you to get the highest class teachers for the various de
partments that it is necessary to have and possible to obtain, . "I have often felt that the educational Institutions of Indiana had been neglected, from the colleges down to the little country school house. I feel that the highest class and very best teachers for every department should be obtained, because we must under
stand that the world is moving onward and upward, and Indiana- must keep apace with this forward stride. "I have said, and have always felt, that Indiana cannot do too much for its educational system, and I hope that the people of Richmond and Wayne county will respond promptly and generously to your endowment call. "With personal regards, I beg to remain, yours very truly. (Signed) "T. TAGGART."
ANTARES AND MARS ARE RUSHING CLOSE TOGETHER Observers of the sky have probably noticed two bright red stars in the southern evening horizon, about fifteen degrees apart. The most westerly red star is the planet Mars; the other
I is the fixed star Antares. In the next
few weeks it wil be interesting to observe the approach of Mars to Antares. Mars is moving eastward and will pass Antares on September 17. They will then be less than three degrees apart. Mars is slowly losing his brilliancy. A month ago he was 65,000,000 miles from us. Now his distance is about 115,000,000 miles.

Pass Out Whiskey at New York Revue? Want to Know (Ey Associated Press) NEW YORK, Aug. 18. James Shev lin, federal prohibition enforcement agent, today started an investigation to ascertain whether there was really a "tickle" in the little souvenir bottles passed out last night at the opening performance of "Tickle Me," at a local theatre. While singing an encore to one number entitled, "We've Got Something," the chorus girls passed down the aisles carrying baskets with tiny bottles labeled whiskey. Overcoming a wholesale timidity, a few in the audience opened their souvenirs, sniffed, tasted, smacked their lips and gave exclamations and applause that left no doubt as to their opinion ot the refreshment.
