HOOSEVELT SPEAKER IN CHICAGO: STATE CAMPAIGN BEGINS CHICAGO, Aug. 12. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic candidate for vice president, opened his campaign here last night with the first address hfifts delivered filncrt h accented (hfi nomination last Monday. ; Before a crowd of 3,000 at the Auditorium theatre, he urged Republicans ' and independents to join the Democrats in support of the platform adopted at the San Francisco convention and of the ticket nominated there. He told Republicans their party had been split by a quarrel among the leaders and that the faction represent ed by Harding, was the "old guard," which Theodore Roosevelt had oppos ed , Addressing himself particularly to those who are ' not Democrats, Mr. -Roosevelt said: , "The day is past when it 4s either popular or useful to damn everybody and everything connected with the opposition." McCulloch,' Democratic gubernatorial nominee, addressed the members of the Jackson club and a larg3 delegation of voters. He spoke on the stand of the Democrats on the League of , Nations and bitterly attacked the present Republican state administration. Prof. Albert Stump, of Indianapolis, also delivered a talk. A new roundup of slackers was launched here Thursday when United States deputy marshals and agents of the Federal bureau of investigation started combing Chicago for 212 men alleged either to have failed to register for the draft or to answer summonses of their local boards. The list of the 212 alleged delinquents and slackers was received from Washington Tuesday by District Attorney Clyne. WEEGHMAN SOLVENT, IS COURT DECISION CHICAGO, 111., Aug. 12. Charles Weeghman & Co., owner of a chain of restaurants, is solvent. There is no need for a receiver. This was the decision of Judge Kickham Scanlan after hearing a receivership petition filed by attorneys representing two creditors. Case & Martin and the Security Flour company. They claimed the action was necessary to insure payment of debts totaling near $7,000. Weeghman's attorneys explained that all creditors except these two were wiiling to give him a chance to show his solvency and that the bills in question were only 30 days old. Judge Scanlan immediately threw the case out of court. MISS CLARK RETURNS TO SERVICE BUREAU Miss S. Ethel Clark, formerly secretary of the Social Service Bureau, but lately a member of the state board of charities, has again accepted the position of secretary of the local Social Service Bureau. She will assume her old position on Sept. 1. Since Miss Clark's resignation nearly a year ago. Miss Gladys Hartman has been in charge of the work.
