The Farm and the Fanner By William R. Sanborn
John Townsend, one of the victims of the hog dope, tells of his experience in one instance, as follows: "A likely young porker walked up to the feeder, sampled the contents and hurried away to drink. He drank freely and then commenced to go round in circles, as if drunk. The next morning he lay dead beside the water trough when I went to feed. Two others died before I took the hint and quit feeding the tonic." The Cook Milling company at Middleboro say they have not been buying any wheat of late, being full from the early rush. All the wheat in the vicinity of the mill la now threshed and also most of the oats. Fine Wheat on Tobacco Ground. "My best wheat was grown on tobacco ground," said Frank Blackford, of Eldorado. "I cut 30 bushels on tobacco land and but 15 bushels on balance of the fild, both being good wheat. We have the promise of the best corn crop in years around Eldorado. Am sorry to say, however, that I have seen some of the poorest tobacco around here this summer that I have seen in years. If any should ask my views on the situation would advise men having good leaf to hold it." Oldest in Indiana. The Henry County Co-operative Jersey Bull association, the oldest organization of its kind in the state, will make its first Interchange of bulls in September. The average investment of the individual farmer at the inception of the association was about $25. This will afford eight years of fine Jersey breeding. 180 Bushels From 8 Acres. A little patch of eight acres on the Theodore Martin farm, north of Chester, yielded 180 bushels of No. 1 grain, or 22V2 bushels to the acre. Mr. Martin says that this is good seed wheat. Strange Wheat Story. In telling of his wheat experience this summer Bert Jennings related the fact that while the crop across the line fence was eaten up by the fly. ! his wheat not merely escaped but was 4 of euch fine quality that all but 70 bushels has already been sold for seed at a premium. This particular lot. of wheat was a "bearded" variety, and ran about 22 bushels to the acre. His acreage of Michigan Amery wheat, smooth, ran lower, or about 18 bushels. He used 300 pounds of fertilizer to the acre. Mr. Jennings lives on the Crester pike. When through planting, his neighbor across the line fence borrowed the drill and got busy, sowing some wheat on the same day. This wa the wheat the fly devastated. Mr. Jennings says he has no explanation to offer, but he knows his wheat was all right, very free from cockle or weed, and that it showed no trace of fly. Ask Frozen Lamb Embargo. The Colorado Stockgrowers' association have adopted a resolution of protest against further importation of frozen lamb from British colonies; also favoring an import embargo on wool, at least for a time. The resolution, asking action, was sent to President Wilson. Much of the decline in the price of lambs resulted from the importation of several cargoes of New Zealand frozen lamb, DOO.OOO pounds coming in during a single week when lamb prices were high. American packers are the buyers. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1920. J. W. Emrick, Big Type Poland Chinas, 12:30 p. m. 2 miles south-east New Madison, O., 4 miles north of Eldorado, O. Thursday, Aug. 12. 1,500 BUSHELS OF BIG, JUICY PEACHES NEXT DOOR TO CITY By WILLIAM R. SANBORN. Any man haying 1,500 bushels of peaches ripening right now has a pleasing prospect, especially so when living: within a few miles of Richmond and Eaton, neither Wayne or Preble being known as peach country. Frank Blackford, of Eldorado, tells us that he has been estimating his peach crop and Is confident that it will run close to 1,500 bushels, perhaps more. Mr. Blackford Is In love with horticulture, he is a "fruitologist" and ha devoted much time to telling farmers that a little fruit on the home place Is a mighty good thing, and 1b well worth all the care that can be given It. He has done considerable extension work for the state of Ohio and has also lectured in various other states, on his
ravonte topic. Has Several Varieties. Mr. Blackford says that peaches are doing well around Eldorado, although the crop will not be large, as trees are few. But in any event there will be many more peaches than were grown last year, this being true in his own case. His Triumph peach will be first to ripen, then will follow the Carmans, next the Champions and Solways, the latter trees being loaded this season, compared with but few last year. He will have some Elbertan, but these were thinned by high winds. As to plums, "there is an abundance this year, the Reina Claude being especially prolific." With the exception of strawberries, which suffered from drouth, berries, cherries and orchard fruits, other than apples, seems to have made, or are promising good crops, in the Eldorado and West Manchester districts of Preble. In fact, taking the county as a whole. 1920 may be designated "a fruit year" over that way. Fruit From Western Idaho. Western Idaho is likely to supply a part of the Richmond demand for fruits this season, particularly boxed apples and fresh Italian prunes, as well as dried prunes of the 6ame variety. Few of us are advised of the growth of the fruit industry in the Gem state, but It is coming right along. Peaches were winter killed but aside from these Idaho Is to have a wonderful fruit crop on 32,000 acres this year. Large shipments of cherries came east from 4.000 acres of commercial orI chards, and nearly 1,800 cars of prunes I v. in iomow as -piums, snortly, or as j primes later on. As to apples we mayexpect upward of 4,000 cars, after sup plying toe nome demand. All Idaho fruit is closely graded and is winning a reputation. That the fruit area Is thus widening is good news to the masses, to those who have found fruit too costly for (heir purses. With present methods of wide distribution we cannot grow too much fruit. Comparatively few of us get enough of It it doesn't seem to go 'round. FRESH BEEF GOING DOWN OVER .AMERICA The price of fresh beef at wholesale, throughout the entire country, has. declined materially of late; as much as 10 to 15 per cent in th east during July. Relatively speakin?. the supply of beef was larger in July than in June, compared with demand. The decline in the cheaper cuts has been greatest but the public Btill insists in maintaining the greatest demand for the most expensive cut?. Many packers have lost money on much of their 1920 fresh beef opera tions, and say that August shows no promise of a change for the better. Price Range Widens. The spread in price range between handy weight butcher cattle and choice yearlings, and the grass fed or partly finished stock, has been constantly widening. There has been an abundance of heavy cattle, but people are demanding lighter beef during the warm weather, thus favoring medium weight corn-fed dry lot cattle, which have been in brisk demand. The reduction in the price of beef has been country wide and the decline at wholesale has not been checked on average grades. This is the explanation of why we are getting bo much nice fresh beef in Richmond, for bo little money, compared with prices when the H. C. I held eway in our meat markets. Cattle, sheep and hogs are Wiled here at home. Here Is a saving of freight on the live stock, and of shrink and commission for selling. This meat can be piled on our meat blocks and packed in our coolers at a great saving, compared to that shipped hundreds of miles on hoof and reshlpped in refrigerator cars. Relief is Slowly Coming In Grain Car Situation If reports to the public service commission from the interstate commerce commission regarding the grain car situation in Indiana can be taken as an indication, relief is In sight. A telegram received today by John W. McCardle, vice chairman of the commission, from Clyde B. Aitchison of the Interstate commerce commission, states that the national body i. handling the grain situation vigorously. Investigations from Washington are under way in this state as regards the shortage of grain cars, and reports indicate it is dally becoming less. Farm Federation - Everett Hunt, president, announces that Earl Crawford, of Milton, will be the principal speaker at the Franklin township meetng at Whitewater, on Monday evening, and that his subject will be "Special Legislation." Mr. Crawford Is a member of the Btate federation legislative committee, and was present during the recent special session. Masonic Calendar
