The Diary of an Engaged Girl
By Phyllis Phillips
After the first shock following Nessa's fatal disclosure, I was seized w ith a great desire to laugh, and laugh I did. Most mirthfully. Finally between gales, I told Nessa why I was so doing, and she, too, joined me. We had the best time ever between us and at the end, while wiping our eyes, we agreed that that was the only sensible way to take men anyhow! I expect that if I live very much longer with some of my friends Romance will slowly curl up and die within my tender young bosom. But it may all be for the best at that. Not only has Prince Charming nay,
Heart Problems
I am a young girl 17 and went with a young man 21 years old. I thought the world and all of him. He came to see me for two months, and then he stopped coming to see me. He was wful good looking and a good singer. I fell in love with him when I first laid eyes on him and still love him until this day. I can't get him off my mind. I can't eat, sleep, or go with any other boy but what I will think and think of him. Most any girl would be foolish over him. It has been a year since I Went with him but I still think of him. I am a very nipe young girl and am awful quiet and don't talk very much but still I am not bashful. Do you think the young man stopped me because I was quiet and don't talk as much as some girls do? What shall I do to be jolly and a good entertainer? What can I do to forget this fellow and love some one else? Thank You. Your problem is a very interesting one to me and J sympathize with you to the fullest extent. Two points in your letter stand out in my mind as I think over your letter. The first point is that you have not gone with tins ynung man for over a year and
yet you cherish his memory in your mind so much that it threatens to undermine your health. The second point is that you ask me how you shall forget him. I believe, dear young girl, that if your love for him could not be forgotten you would not ask me how to forget him. That is what I am going to advise you to do. Evidently he does not care for you or he would r.ot have stopped coming to see you. At your age, 17, you ought not allow the thoughts of a boy to be so much in your mind. Bend all your energies toward securing the very best education possible in order that you may acquire all the poise and mental balance required of a cultured refined woman. A girl of 17 should not allow an attraction for a boy to ruin her life. Cultivate friendships with both men find women and your associations will give you that charm of manner that will enable you to feel at home in any society. Then there will be plenty of time to think of falling in love. No One Thousands of good mothers rre as you, torn between the sense of duty and the desire to obtain relief from injustices. At times there seems no reason on earth why one should ruffer intolerable treatment from another. But in your case five innocent children are dependent upon a mother's love. That is a great deal. I say these things to remind you first, that whatever you eventually do, it must he with the happiness and future welfare of those, whom you say you are proud of. continually in mind. In this day there is no reason why anyone
should be but the plaything or a brute. No one need carry the cross of repeated human wrong. No one because of her self sacrifice has to go to the grave or worse, with the hold of a leech upon her. At once make it understood where you stand. Cry out f.gainst further tolerance of your unnecessary burdens, and let your persecutor recopnize your independence. If you should choose to break away, your children could be provided for during the day at the Day Nursery while you worked. The cost would be a nominal one and would probably be (letermined by your circumstances. Organized charities such as the Social Service bureau look after the. needs of those in desperate straits. I shall be f.lad to hear from you asain if you fool the ned of additional advice or information.
he has suddenly become himseii, just plain, unadulterated Harry to me now a wife, but twins of six years old, little girls, plus a young son of seven and one-half. I feel a wee bit sorry for poor Mrs. Harry, somehow or other, but as Nessa Bays, she knows her Harry thoroughly, and lets him wander and philander about as much as he chooses; for he always does run back to her, happily. Makes the kissed ones feel so good, all this side information about this Don Juan, eh, what? Well, I still think that it is our foolish training that is at fault, rather than Harry or myself or the other girls that he has kissed. We don't ever discover how to tell a lover from a husband! And there is a way, bo they say. Nessa was amused to death at my story of Harry and his love for me. "Lord, honey, he makes love to every new face that he meets," said she brutally. "He just can't help himself and no one ever takes him seriously. But he is a dear fellow just the same and we think the world of him, for all his faults." Good thing for me that I was not in love with Harry, all the samey, for I might not have gotten over it so easily as he; but, thank goodness, it was only some romantic streak in me that was touched by him and his dark eyes not my heart. Nessa and I had a mighty good time together, and she showed me some of her illustrations for a new fairytale book. She really is awfully clever and does the snappiest black and white sketches. Everything so full of fantasy. She looks like a little gypsy herself. It interested me greatly to find out from her own lips that she and Ted earn about the same amount of money
I a year and share all expenses. No I wonder they are so happy. I think
that they are an ideal couple, and with no hesitation Nessa acknowledged that they were all of that. She also told me that if she were to let Ted support her, and become just a wife with no outlook farther than the four walls of the home, and no work of her own, they would become a pair of fighting-cocks within a week, and end up in Reno! Whoever said that untried Youth (that is myself) does not know anything? Why, I knew all along that the true basis for a lasting happiness in matrimony is mutual respect, which comes from both parties working or being interested in something besides just each other, and in mutually contributing to the up-keep of the home. And I am not no Socialist either, so there! Blame it on that seventh sense, or my womanly instinct if you like, and you'll be nearer the truth. (To he continued.)

What's in a Name (Copyright)
THELMA No list of feminine names would be complete without the lovely Thelma, It is a Norse name, suggestive of the mythology of the Land of the Midnight Bun where Valkyries drive their gleaming chariots over the battlefield and conduct the glorious dead to their appointed places, in Valhalla, Little was known of Thelma and seldom was the name used outside of Scandinavia, until Marie Corelli in her sensational novel of that name presented the tragic love story of a beautiful Norwegian who was transplanted from the land of fjords to the center

of London's smartest and most corrupt society. From that time the number of Thelmas, in England and America were legion. The name has had particular vogue in this country where the Scandinavian Immigration is great. As a romantic and poetical name, Thelma is without equal but her popularity has never extended beyond Scandinavian and English speaking countries. Amber is Thelma's talismanic stone. It will guard her from all evil especially from contagion. To wear it on a Journey will preserve her from accident. Monday is her lucky day and 7 her lucky number.
