Fernando Calderon
Don Fernando Iglesias-Calderon, Mexican high commissioner to the United States, with the rank of ambassador, typifies the old and new In Mexico. He Is a most pleasing personality, with all the grace and none f rf tho nantlflAee of
J,7$ 'the old Spanish
Spanish descent, his ' family has been '' long In Mexico. A man of vast learning, culture ' and refinement, Mr. ' Igleslas (Calderon was his mother's ' name) reminds one ' for all the world of
'.the southern gentleman of the old
school. Yet the Mexicanhigh commis
sioner is anything
but a mere ornament. He Is a strong
man in the best sense of the term, and does not hesitate to call a spade a spade, although he does so in such a manner as to express positive con
viction without giving offense.
Mr. Igleslas largely held aloof from
the reign of Porflrlo Diaz, foreseelni
Just such a mess as followed the overthrow of that srong character after thirty years as Mexico's president. He condemned not so much the things which Don Porflrio did as those things which he left undone. Following the assassination of Francisco I. Madero, the present Mexican high commissioner did not hesitate to speak his mind, although he knew full well the danger of doing so with a man like Vlctoriano Huerta In power. As a result he was thrown into prison, but escaped with the assistance of persona who recognized his worth as a man and a citizen of the republic. This was the real occasion of his visit to the United States in 1914, when he spent a month in Washington, and was received by President Wilson as a distinguished citizen of Mexico, at a time when Mr. Wilson was not receiving Mexicans. The president went over the Mexican situation ar length with Mr. Iglesias, who took great pleasure in telling newspaper men th day after he arrived here as high commissioner, that his own views coincided exactly with those of the American chief executive. The Mexican high commissioner has made a distinctly favorable impression on the fw government officials he has mot. He Is a man of seventy years, extremely well preserved, and quite active for a man of his age.

I "HE modern tourist journeys from coast to coast on cushions of air. The properly designed pneumatic tire gives to present day travellers the same easy-riding-comfort on land that the canoe gave our ancestors on the water. But very often the tire designer--in his leal to produce a sturdy tire gains strength at the expense of riding-comfort. Rough riding tires take the joy out of motoring. PORTAGE TIRES are big comfortable tires, scientifically designed to absorb jolts and jars and to keep shocks from reaching the passengers. At the same time PORTAGE TIRES easily withstand the terrific impacts that every tire receives in the day's journey over uneven pavements. Perfectly balanced construction is the reason: that is no great secret
but it is a most difficult perfection to achieve. Portage Tires Ride with Canoe Comfort
