GIANTS TAKE FIRST FROM REDS 5 TO 3; POUND FISHER ilARD
CINCINNATI, Ohio. July 22 Jimmie Ring. Red pitching ace, was granted a leave of absence from the Reds, Wednesday. His mother, in Brooklyn is dangerously ill and despite the hole his absence will make in the Red pitching staff, Moran left Ring gel away. ' The Reds passed up an opportunity to close in on the Dodgers Wednesday when the Giants were permitted to v-aik off with the long end of a 5 to 3 score. Had Moran sent Sallee to start ihe game, the score would probably have had a different ending- Sallee relieved Fisher, after the Giants had pounded 5 runs In three Innings, and held them in check for the rest of the fracas. City, Factory and Suburban Teams
Scramble For Championship Honor
Baseball teams and league in Rich
mond are about to Indulge in a wild scramble for championship honors.
The Saturday Afternoon league and
Suburban league are in the midst of
a stiff championship race, and the
Richmond Eagles, Giants and Hagers-
town are claiming and counter-claiming the semi-pro championship of Wayne county.
But the lesser lights, the ones that
play baseball for the fun and consider a game with five or six errors to the
side a good game, have become im
bued with the superiority stuff.
Hodge Issues Challenge. George Hodge, who, as manager of
the A. S. M. Commercial league team
last year, made a reputation as a convincing talker, has come forth with a sweeping challenge to the Commercial league. George has been guiding the destinies of the Harvester
league, formerly the A. S. M. league,
and wants to see which Is superior. And George incidentally challenges
the Home Telephone company for a
same at Exhibition park next Wed
nesday. The Phoners are recognized
as the class of the Commercial league and the team having the best chance
to tame Hodge's wild men.
The First National and Dickinson
Trust bankers have been having a
sweet little baseball Beries all their
own this summer. But the Second
Nationals have grown ambitious and are anxious to try out the Commercial leaguers. Hlmes Dairymen or the Pennsy team will take care of them, however. Class of Own. The class shown by the Richmond EaKles in recent games puts them
head and shoulders above the other
claimants for county honors Hagerstown and Richmond Giants. The Eagles have used this. lineup in the last four games and will continue with it for the rest of the season providing it continues to win. Fans say that Hagerstown should
go out and make a reputation for it
self before claiming the championship
of the county. Hagerstown plays a few strong teams and then loads up when Richmond is to be played. That is not a true comparison of Btrength, however. A series of games between the Richmond Giants and Hagerstown would show comparative strength. The Eagles are believed to be superior to the Giants. The showing both
teams made against Hamilton Is the grounds for this belief. Game May Decide Although the Starr Piano is leading the Saturday Afternoon league, Saturday's game between the Starr and Natco at Exhibition park may change
the standing. But to pick either the Starr or Natco as winner of the S A. L. championship, would be a rash thing. The lour teams of the league are evenly matched, with the pitching strength with the Starr. The other three teams have better all 'round line-ups than the Piano Makers, however. Eldorado, leader of the Suburban league, has not lost a game all season and looks to be the best bet of the league. Although near the bottom of the heap, the Richmond Shamrocks are believed to be the next bet to the leading Eldorado outfit. The Shamrocks run into hard luck and lose by one run. Lynn is placed on a par with the Shamrocks. DopesterB say the Richmond Giants and Hagerstown should clash. Then Richmond Eagles and winner of the Suburban league meet in a series of clashes. Then the winners and losers hook up. And the team that lost the fewest games be declared champ of the county. And the dopesters zzv Commercial and Harvester leagues should mix things. And the winner play an exhibition game with the winner of the S. A. L.
8UES FOR DIVORCE Alleging that he struck her and threatened to kill her, Marie Mundhenk, formerly of this city, has filed suit In common pleas court in Eaton, against Hal D. Mundhenk for divorce and restoration to her maiden name of Bunger. They were married October 14, 1913, in Eaton, and are childless.

BABE RUTH GREATER MAGNET THAN GOBB
When Jacob Ruppert and Til Huston last winter paid 130,000 In real, cold
cash for the services or . Babe Ruth, opinion was divided as to the wisdom of the Investment, says Daniels, in the New York Sun and Herald. A good many baseball men who were regarded as shrewd followers of the game, with an uncommon supply of business acumen, said that the sum named was out of kilter with the value of the player to the New York club, both in the field and as a box office attraction. They placed emphasis on the fact that an injury might put the home run king out of the game for the entire season. Ask Ruppert and Huston now regarding the business side ol their investment and they will chuckle and break into a broad smile. They risked and already have won,, for Ruth has proved a magnet stronger than Tyrus Cobb at the height of his popularity. For the first time in the history of the New York American league club, fans are being turned away not only at the Polo grounds, but on the road as well. On their recent tour in the west the Yankees played to 200,000 persons, and
Huston figures that before the season is over the club will have played to a paid admittance of a million and a half. If this dope proves correct and there Is every reason to believe that it will the Yankees will set a new major league attendance record for a
season.
