SANDOPiEEK TO HAVE CENTENARY; EDWARDS TO PREACH

COI7UMBTJS, Ind., July 16. Special centenary Bervices In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Sandcreek Friends church near here will he held next Sunday. David M. Edwards, president of Earlham college, will deliver the anniversary sermon. Included in the program for the day is an historical pageant, in which the men and women members of the church will worship separately, as in the old Quaker days, with their hats on except when preaching or praying. Another feature of the pageant will be a Quaker wedding representing the time when no civil license was required, but. instead the license was granted by the church. The ceremony will be the same as was used for the wedding of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hall, charter members of the church, and a young couple of the church will represent the principals at the wedding. Old Scenes to Be Reproduced. The pageant will also include reproductions of scenes and incidents of the "underground railroad" on which a number of Quaker homes were station and at which fugitive slaves were given seclusion, food and shelter and sent on their way farther north prior to and in the first years of the civil war. A scene to be reproduced will be one enacted at the home of John Hall, when owners of runaway slaves called at the home, and explaining that they suspected some of their slaves were being harbored in the home, demanded permission to search. Hall replied: "1 want thee to understand that thee cannot search my home unless thou hast a warrant," whereupon the slave .owners announced that they would get ra warrant and went away. Transferred During Interval. As it so happened runaway slaves were secreted in the home at the time, but while their owners, we're gone for a warrant they were transferred to another "station" and were never recaptured. When the church was organized a log structure was built for the worthipers and at about the same time a log schoolhouse was built near the church. A seminary that later gained much educational prominence for those times was established. The late Willis Newsora of Sand Creek township was one of the founders and charter members of the

church, and his son, the Rc-v. David T. Kewsom, who 13 83 years old, still preaches at the church.

General Pershing receiving the sword from Ambassador Geddes. The British ambassador to the United States, Sir Auckland Geddes, recently presented to Gen. Pershing a magnificent 6word, jeweled, chased and engraved in commemoration of the splendid services rendered during the war by General Pershing and the men who fought under him. The sword was a gift from the corporation and city of London, delayed until London's jewelers could be released from their military tasks long enough to fashion the giffe with all possible care.

WASHINGTON. Frequently whfn a scone on the screen is pictured where an actor takes hazardous chances, the wise ones will tpll you a "dummy" or "double" is being used. As a matter of fact, the better actors never fake, and consider It a point of honor to go through the dangerous gcenes themselves. This was illustrated forcibly during the screening of "In Mizroura," the new Paramount-Artcraft picture, starring Robert Warwick, which is shoving at the Washington Friday and Saturday. Hugh Ford, the director went to Robert Cain, the "heavy," and told him a break-neck horse-back ride was "Scheduled, in which Cain was to be pursued by Major Warwick, and knocked headlong from the saddle. Mr. Ford offered to have an "extra" double for Cain in the scene. "Not by a jug full," said the actor. The ride was undertaken and came out successfully, except that Major Warwick gave the plucky Cain a beautiful black eye and knocked him into a clump of prickly shrub. But Cain was satisfied, if not exactly happy. MURRETTE.

Tom Mix, in all his daring career on and off the screen, has done few ; more dangerous things than the jump j he made from a bridge to a window in J filming one of the episodes of "Dcseitj Love," the Fox picture, scheduled for the last half of the week at the! Murrotte theatre. The stnrv- ri-onirpd Tom Mix to fr.l-'

The heroine, played with groat charm by Miss Francelia Billington, is in the hands of the villain. The Fox star hears the cries of the girl issuing from the top room of the mill. The only way he can enter is

to Jump from a broken railroad track that once had led into the window, but was now cut off about fifteen feet away. Below was a drop of 50 feet, the track being elevated on a wooden bridge. Mix ran along the ties and made the long leap to the window Tom Mix wore his regular cowboy outfit, which made the difficult stunt more difficult. He had to Jump with unusual force in order to break through the window frame as -well as the glass. Had he missed the window or failed to crash through, he would have fallen to the rocks below.
