CANNOT SEE LEAGUE, ; BUT MUST SUPPORT PARTY, SAYS S. REED (By Associated Press) ST. JOSEPH, Mo., July 15. Reiterating his opposition to the covenant of the league of nations as it is now framed. Senator James A. Reed, of Missouri, addressed a meeting here Wednesday night, opening the Democratic campaign in Missouri. "I intend to support the Democratic candidates," Senator Reed asserted, "notwithstanding the declarations of the party upon the league of nations, because the great principles of the Democratic party which have survived the vicissitudes of the century still live. "Upon the league of nations, the platform of neither party suits me, but there is something greater than the platform of a political convention. It is the platform of Americanism. That platform was proclaimed in the decla
ration of independence. It was formulated by George Washington in these words: Quotes First President. " 'Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none or very remote relations. Hence, she must be engaged in frequent controversies. The causes of which are essentially foreign to our concern. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise of us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of tter politics, or the ordinary combinations and collusions of her friendships or enmities.' "That is sound democratic doctrine. That Is sound American doctrine. To It I adhere, and by it I will abide to the end." One of the principles which he aserted was one of the very cardinal rlnciples of democratic policy "is that this government should constitute the leading power on this Bide of the Atlantic, shielding and protecting Against foreign aggression the weaker (countries of the western hemisphere and that It should forever keep itself free of entanglements with European and Asiatic powers, refusing to take part in their wars, controversies or Intrigues, except where our interests 'were directly concerned." "The demand of the hour," the senator said, "is for the exercise of sober Judgment, patient investigation and the exercise of infinite caution. Many mighty problems are pressing." The Theatres MURRAY. The role of Captain Swift in the feature of that, name, which will be shown at the Murray theatre the last half of the week, has been a particularly lucky one for the actors who have undertaken it. The play is British, having been written by an English playwright, C. Haddon Chambers, and its first production was piven more than a score of years ago in London. Sir Herbert Tree, then just Herbert Beerbohm Tree, without a title, was the first to appear as Captain Swift It has been generally admitted that it was in this play that he made his first success, which resulted In his being knighted. The late Maurice Barrymore. father of John, Lionel and Miss Ethel, all stars in their own right created the role in this country and in

Williams, who is creating the role on the screen, undoubtedly will achieve similar success in the role. MURRETTE. The motion picture world has learned to expect a great deal from the Fox cowpuncher star, Tom Mix. In productions such as "The Dare-Devil," and "The Speed Maniac" he set for himself standards of thrilling height. It is consequently gratifying to find that In his latest effort he has not taken a bigger bite than he can chew. He demonstrated yesterday, at the opening of "Desert Love," at the Murrette theatre, that his reputation as the screen's greatest daredevil, is well' earned. "Desert Love" is delightfully western. Its settings, its psychology, its grim conflict, all cry In accents loudto the eye and the heart that are part and parcel of the great and virile west, Its men love as they fight, with an uncompromising directness 'hat transports the spectator. The tale is built around the conflict between a dauntless sheriff and a gang of outlaws. Tom Mix, as a sheriff of an Arizona border county. Is determined to exterminate the rustlers, headed by "Wolf" Kenyon and "The Whelp." He attains his object but only after much fighting and many close escapes. RICHMOND. Dorothy Daltou is starring Thursday at the Richmond theatre in "The Vampire," a Triangle play adapted from "The Female of the Species,'' bv Rus CA ell E. Smith. The beautiful and tal.lnted star nortravs a role that is mirtlcularly adapted to her personality that of an unconventional temptress who gains her ends through a series of Intensely interesting scenes only to taste the bitterness of defeat in the end. The big scene in the story Is the head-on collision between a freight train and an overland express that takes place through a confusion of orders. Included in the cast are such wellknown players as Howard Hickman, Enid Markey, Gertrude Claire, Roy Laidlaw and Aggie Herring. Monte M. Katterjohn picturjzcd the photoplay. ALL-METAL PLAJSE John L. Larsen Aeronautical engineers have pronounced the uniq o all-metal airplane, built by John K. Larsen, a step forward in aviation. The new craft, a monoplane, re Raymond B. West directed it and Robert Brunton was art director. WASHINGTON The remarkable success of Dorothy Dalton in portraying three distinct characters is the outstanding feature of "Black Is White," the motion picture at the Washington Theater. It is an adaption of George Barr McCutcheon's novel of the same name. Starting as the modest, retiring wife of Jim Brood, a masterful man whose jealousy of her approaches madness, after a quarrel Miss Dalton, as Margaret, leaves him and goes to live with her invalid sister, Theresa. The latter is about to be adopted by a Baron Skrakosch, but before this can take place she dies. Thereupon Margaret impersonates the fragile Theresa, whom she closely resembles, and becomes the adopted daughter of the Baron, living at his Paris home. She quickly acquires vivacity and charm in this atmosphere and is the reigning beauty of the capital where her husband meets her at a banquet. Failing to recognize her, he falls in love with her again, and, after some difficulties, happiness results. Other features of "Black Is White," besides Miss Dalton's noteworthy performance, are a lavish banquet scene in which diplomats of all nations in full dress take part and some colorful "shots" in an Indian jungle. Thomas H. Ince produced the picture, which was directed by Charles Giblyn and is a Paramount Artcraft. Suburban GRATIS, O. It doesn't do much good to try to brush or wash it out. The only sure way to get rid of dandruff is to dissolve it, then you destroy it entirely. To do this, get about four ounces of ordinary liquid arvon; apply it at night when retiring; use enough to moisten the scalp and rub it in gently with the finger tips. By morning, most if not ail, of your dandruff will be gone, and three or four more applications will completely dissolve and entirely destroy every single sign and trace of it. You will find, too, that all itching and digging of the scalp will stop, and your hair will look and feel a hundred times better. You can get liquid arvon at any drug store. It is inexpensive and four ounces is all you will need, no matter how much dandruff you have. This simple remedy never fails. Advertisement
