OLD HENRY COUNTY DAYS RECALLED AS HENRY NATIVES OF INDIANAPOLIS MEET

Butler, of Cincinnati, Journeyed to the land of,fice at Brookville, Ind., and bought a tract of land. Three days later, Jo8lah Morris and Samuel Ferguson made purchases, and what is now Henry county came into being.- Could the Immutable law of life and death be suspended long enough for these three to visit Brookslde park, in Indianapolis, they would be surprised and pleased. For the Henry county society .made up of former citizens and descendants of the early pioneers of that county, held its annual ro union. Troops of children, bright-eyed and merry, romped about the grounds. Maidens not In linaey- woolsey. -and young men aecoutered in Palm Beach Buits Instead of home-made Jeans, laughed and chatted. Sedate matrons and staid citizens from the Harvey neighborhood or the Heaton neighborhood, or the Leavelle neighborhood, told of the days when they attended the Henry county seminary, the academy at Knlghtstown, Splceland academy or the school Established by the Rich Square meeting of the Society of Friends, where Huldah WickerBham and, Lydia White gave training to many men and women distinguished in public and private life in later years. Wonders of Former Days. How they used to meet at the Shroyer corner in Newcastle, and wander over to Christian Ridge, oi visit the mounds on the HuddlestQn farm were told again. . Here and there venerable patriarchs delighted to tell of the times they went swimming in Blue river, and caught turtles in Flat Rock or Stoney creek, and how Asahel Woodward rate ed the first crop of corn in Henry county, and what excitement there was when Martin Bundy brought the first sewing machine into the county, and brought, too, a woman from Cincinnati to show his wife how to op. erate it. The whole village turned out to inspect the first cook stove brought to the place by Thad Owen and the first steam saw mill set up In Jimtown was considered a marvel in progress. 6ome were on the reception committee when President Martin Van Buren visited Knlghtstown, and told how the great crowd was charged 18 cents for

Warlike Period Recalled. In the crowd were some -who marched to the' war with Captain Fred Tykle, of Company E; Captain W. D. Wiles, of Company A; Captain Lewis C. Freeman, of Company F; Captain Pyrrhua Woodward of Company C, and Captain D. W. Chambers, of Company D, of the 36th regiment, commanded by Colonel William Grose, with a staff consisting of Major Isaao Kinsley and Captain George W. Leonard, adjutant Many present remembered the glorious runs of Newcastle hook and ladder company No. 1, with George Burke as captain, assisted by John Thornburg, Lon Rodgers, A. W. Coffin, Mat Grose, W. J. Shelley, William Albright, Will Gary. B. F. Moore. David Fisher, Weeley Goodwin and Charles Jefferles, and the old Newcastle Sliver Cornet Band, with Mlt Fonts blowing the principal horn. Treasured as keepsakes are a few copies of the Daily Noon Courier, published for a few days in 1880 the forerunner of the Newcastle Courier, now one of the most enterprising dailies In Indiana. Present were some born in Knlghtstown, Middletown, Honey Creek, Me chanlcsburg, Lewisburg, Greensboro, Kennard, Cadiz, Fulphur Springs, Millvllle. Mount Summit, Hlllsboro, Spring Port, Blountsvllle, Splceland, Dunreith and Newcastle, and among them was more than one who came to Indianapolis on the first passenger train between Newcastle and Indianapolis over the old Indianapolis, Bloomington & Western now the Peoria & Eastern division of the Big Four, which made its way carefully from one city to the other June 20, 1882. iVeu; York Landlords Find Ways to Defeat the Purposes of Rent Laws (By Associated Press) NTW YORK, July 13 The new state rent laws are ineffective and have not deterred profiteering landlords from continuing rent gouging assaults of! thousands of tenants in New York City, according to Leo Kenneth Mayer, chief counsel for the Mayor's Committee on Rent Profiteering. The landlords are adopting diverse methods to circumvent the new laws, Mr. Mayer declared and have been successful to a certain extent The three chief dodges employed by tMe landlords as outlined by Counsel Mayer are to: Notify tenants that their leases will not be renewed unless they are willing to pay exorbitant rentals. If they refuse to meet this increase the tenants are then ousted by due process of the law. Notify tenants that the premises have been sold on the co-operative

through alleged sales and thus be able to extract a higher rental. The entire legal staff of the rent committee has been placed at the disposal of tenants in their fight against the rent, profiteer. EVANSVILLE PAYS TRIBUTE TO MEMORY OF ALLEN GRAY EVANSVILLE. Ind.. July 13. Funeral services for Allen Gary, wealthiest man in Evansville, who died here last Friday, were held at the Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church. The services were in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Hamilton A. Hymes. After the services the body lay in state for one hour. Banks of the city were closed one hour out of respect to Mr. Gray.
