would have blown Josephus off the job or himself into a thousand pieces." Since Franklin Roosevelt has in no sense been a national figure, it is perhaps pardonable to suspect the Democratic politicians of selecting him because he bears a nationally prominent surname.
Franklin Roosevelt The Democratic nominee for vice-president bears a great and distinguished name and has been a reform politician, but there the resemblance ends in a comparison with his great cousin, Theodore Roosevelt. During, the Spanish-American war Theodore Roosevelt resigned as assistant secretary of the navy to help form and fight with the famous Rough Riders' regiment. During the World war Franklin Roosevelt was content to remain as an assistant secretary of the navy under Josephus Daniels. Apropos of this, the Chicago Tribune says: "Neither in war nor in peace could Theodore Roosevelt have been an assistant secretary of the navy under Josephus Daniels. Theodore
Republicans United Senator Hiram Johnson's statement asking voters to support the Republican party as the party that believes in "safeguarding, protecting and preserving our Americanism," dashes the faint hopes Democratic politicians have held that the Californian would lead a bolt from the Republican party. Far from bolting and creating a situation favorable to the Democratic interests as in 1912,
the senator's statement will tend greatly to unite the progressive and conservative wings of his
party. Senator Johnson picks up the gage of battle thrown down by the Democratic party in its platform, the Wilson league of nations, and in attacking that dream of internationalism directs attention to the pre-eminent and outstanding issue of the 1920 political campaign. Next November will tell the tale whether or not this country, is to be permanently committed to a minor position in a combination of foreign powers, as the Wilson league plan provides.

ANTIDOTES. An antidote' is something which produces an opposite effect. I was reading from the meditations of Marcus .Aurelius the other evening. Ke said that Nature had given to man, as an antidote against a stupid man, mildness and against another some hind of a man, some other power. A doctor wouldn't know what to do w ithout his understanding of antidotes "when it comes to facing emergencies
Jn his practice. ' And ho it is the common running of our daily life. We need to carry around in our hearts and understanding of a lot of antidotes ready to .apply them on instant notice. In the Bible you remember the phrase "a Boft answer turneth away w rath." An antidote, you see. Water is an antidote for fire. The two won't play together. But, as in the case of the doctor, it requires skill and understanding to administer an antidote. It takes a very I rave and upstanding man to keen still in the face of unjust abuse. But he usually comes out ten times as big for it. An antidote for ihc noted "blues" Is to c'imb out of yourself. The most useful life is always the one with the largest number of interest?. And each added and successful irterost is an antidote to failure. Exercise and lots of pure, air are nntidotes against a weak and complaining body. This antidote question is very important. It is vital to your happiness end to your usefulness. If you carry r. round with you a great collection of nntidotes. you are bound to meet every mergency in life with confidence. If you are inclined to' be lazy, there is your antido'e work. If you feel yourself slipping awny from your best, there is your antidote will. And so it. is down the list. . Whenever you .get into trouble remember your antidotes!

No other tubes in the world are road tested on so big a scale as Firestones. The Yellow Cab Company cf Chicago uses Firestone Tubes exclusively on its 800 taxicabs. The service of these tubes is checked constantly improvements and developments are arrived at By close watching of a large number of tubes in service not confined to isolated instances the conclusions are accurate and definite. Firestone puts the best in materials into tubes by
establishing purchasing experts at Singapore, center of the world's rubber market. Firestone puts the best in workmanship into tubes by organizing the crack manufacturing organization of the industry on a profit-sharing basis. And then subjects the finished product to this big-scale road test in order to get you more for your tube money and more miles out of your tires.
