ROOSEVELT CHOSEN AS 2ND ON TICKET WITH GOV. J. M, COX

AUDITORIUM, San Francisco, Cal., ' July ?. Franklin R. Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the navy and a rela- ' tiv of the late Col. Roosevelt, was nominated by acclamation for vicepresident by the Democratic national convention Tuesday afternoon as the running mate for Governor James M. "2 ox of Ohio, who was chosen as the presidential nominee on the 44th ballot early yesterday morning. , The band wagon movement for Mr. Roosevelt got under way very quickly soon after the convention assembled and although other candidates among them Governor Stewart of Montaua and Maj. Gen. L. D. Tyson of Tennessee were presented, there was no doubt of Mr. Kostvelt's selection from the first. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born Jan. SO, 1882, at Hyde Park, Dutchess

county, N. Y., the son of Jaes and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt. Receiving his preparatory education at Groton ecuooI, Mr. Roosevelt entered Harvard university, from which he was graduated in 1S04, with tho degree of A D. He then became a student in Columbia law school, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1907. In 1910 he became a partner in the legal firm of Marvin, Hooker & Roosevelt, with offices at i2 Wall street. This connection he etill continues. Elected N. Y. State Senator. In the state campaign of 1910 he accepted the Democratic nomination for state senator in Uie district comprising Dutchess, Putnam and Columbia counties. As this dihtrict in which he has his residence had for 28 years been represented at Albany by a Republican, the nomination was looked upon as an empty honor by his friends and was regarded as a joke by hi? opponents. Mr. Roosevelt, however, entered upon the campaign with c: racteristic vior and aggressive!'.- -. and won a decisive victory Ear!- i:i his senatorial term the election of i United States senator precipitated a conflict between a little group of H-:aMed "indf'iier.de nt" legislators, ;i:id the (solid ranks of "machine politicians."

Of this band of 30 senators and assem

blymen, Mr. Roosevelt became the nat

ural leader, and the determination with which he conducted their resistance of boss rule, and the adroit generalship by which he met every move of the opposition is aaid to have resulted in preventing the election of William F. Sheehan to the senate of the United States. During his senatorial term, Mr. Roosevelt served as chairman of the forest, fish and game committee, and was a member of the railways, canals and agricultural committees. Was Progressive In 1912. In 1912, he was one of the most earnest workers in the progressive movement within the ranks of the New York Democratic organization, which, enlisting the support of the best element of the party, contributed largely to its victory at the polls. He became again a candidate for the state senate, and was re-elected by a greatly increased majority. In March, 1913, he resigned from the New York senate to accept an appointment as assistant secretary of the navy by Presidnet Woodrow Wilson. Mr. Roosevelt is exeatly Interested

in historical research, and has for

some time been engaged in compiling biographies of the early American naval commanders. He belongs to the Eagle Engine company and the Rescue Hook and Ladder company of Hyde Park, and is a member of the Dutchess County so

ciety, the Naval History society, the New York Historical society and of the Harvard club of New York city. Mr. Roosevelt was married in 1905 to Miss Eleanor Roosevelt of Germantown, N. Y., a niece of ex-President Roosevelt. They have five children.

Eight hundred million people living in the world's "malaria zona," which practically coincides with the tropical and semi-tropical regions of the earth, are subject to the "crippling and deadly Influence of that disease," according to George E. Vincent, president of the Rockefeller Foundation. Residents of the southern part of the United States,

Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and the northern part of South America are included in this "malaria belt," said Mr. Vincent, who today issued the second of a series of re

views on the Foundation's work against malaria and hookworm for the year 1919. Practical methods for fighting malaria, as used by the Foundation's sanitarians, Include elimination of the germ carrying anopheles mosquito by preventing Its breeding; the screening of houses against this mosquito, and the use of quinine to sterilize the blood of human malaria carriers.

This Makes the Curl Stay in Your Hair

Th sihnerlne method is unusually pojiuiar just now, according to the druggists. This Is largely due to the warm weather and because women are now spending so much of their time out of doors. This simple method not only produces the loveliest, natural looking curls and waves, but it keeps the hair in curl no matter how hot or how moist the day, or how hard the wind blows. All one need do is to wet a clean tooth brush with liquid silmerine. draw this through the hair before doing it up, and the hair will dry in just the sweetest waves and crinkles. This will also keep the hair beautifully soft, silky and lustrous. A few ounces of liquid silmerine will last for months. Advertisement.

To Have Perfect Skin Throughout the Summer

This is the season when she who would have a lily-white complexion should turn her thoughts to mercollzed wax, the firm friend of the summer girl. Nothing so effectually overcomes the soiling effects of sun, wind, dust and dirt. The wax literally absorbs the scorched, discolored, withered or coarsened scarf skin, bring forth a brand new skin, clear, soft and girl

ishly beautiful. It also unclogs the pores, removing blackheads and increasing the skin's breathing capacity.

An ounce of mercollzed wax, obtain

able at any drug store, applied nightly

like cold cream, and washed off mornings, will gradually improve even the worst complexion. There 13 nothing better for the removal of tan, freckles or blotches. Advertisement.

were due to a misunderstanding of
