GIANTS TAKE BOTH GAMES ON MONDAY
Th Richmond Gianta copped both ends of a double header from Hamilton at Exhibition Park, Monday afternoon, 5 to 4 and 3 to 2, Hamilton's play was vastly Improved over Sunday. The fielding was not top-notch, but It held at critical times. The first game was hard fought, the lead see-sawing from, one to the other. The Giants scored In the first and in the fourth and fifth. Hamilton bunched hits la the fourth and scored three runs. Another was added In the fifth. Mitchell relieved Johnson In the box for the Giants In the sixth and maintained the slender Giant lead. Lynch, Giant short-atop, performed in his usual brilliant style. He handed sven chances without a bobble and slammed two hit out of four times up. His first hit went for two bases. The second game lasted but four and a half Innings as Hamilton had to catch a train. Foxy Bchepman, Rich mond 9. A. L. hurler, was in the box for Hamilton In the eocond game. With proper support he would have blanked the Giants. He whiffed four of the Giants In four Inning? and allowed but 4 bits- He issued one base on balls. Mitchell, who stopped the Hamilton rush in the first game, pitched the second for the Giants. He was hopped for two rune In -the first inning but held Hamilton the rest of the game. Lynch continued his hitting spree, getting two hits out of two attempts. Wedder and Schepman hit triples but Schepman's was wasted. Wedders accounted for Hamilton's runs, however. Lynn Puts Punch In Whitewater for Game One of the many surprises of Sunday's Suburban League basebali schedule was the 7 to 5 defeat of Whitewater by Lynn at Whitewater. The game was punctuated with frequent verbal battles by both teams. First It was an argument over ground rules. Then they wrangled over Lynn's pitcher. Then came growling about the umpire's decision. The players growled to each other about the weather. Good baseball was played, however, when the arguments had ceased. After the final out was made and the last argument ended. It was discovered Lynn was winner. The defeat pulled Whitewater out of first place. Breece and Davis composed the Whitewater batetry. Eaton Wins and Loses With Liberty and M. K.'s EATON, O., July 6. Liberty, lnd., blanked Eaton at baseball here Sun day afternoon by a score of 2 to 0. Noaker Armstrong, local player, sustained a broken nose when a ball struck him in the face. Eaton defeated the Miller-Kempers. Richmond, lnd., here this afternoon, by a score of 9 to 8. At Eldorado, Monday, Eldorado defeated Gratis by a score of 7 to 0. The game featured a Fourth of July celebration. Senators Win 2nd Start From New Madison Nine The Richmond Senators won their second Suburban League game of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating New Madison at New Madison, 10 to 2. The winners were the class from the start, New Madison never having a look-in. The Senators displayed the same class as was used against Centerville. New Madison ball fans say the Senators appeared to be the strongest aggregation that has appeared there this season. In a hospital at Aurora, 111., five children were born to five mothers, all within five minutes. A 1-FUNNEL CUNARDER The Outlook The new Cunardor Scythla, according to an English newspaper, is to have only one funnel for all her 20,000 tons. Time was when a liner's standing was in direct ratio with th number of her funnels. Four funnels indicated A-l rank. One famous steamship was, it is said, equipped with an unnecessary fourth funnel simply for appearance's sake. But now, it appears, the funnels are to go, for only one is really necessary. LEONARD RETAINS TITLE IN A BITTER SCRAP WITH WHITE
BENTON HARBOR, Mich, July C. Benny Leonard, of New York, tUchtwelght champion of the world, fighting his first bout In six months, knocked out the dangerous hitting Charley White of Chicago in the ninth round of a bitterly fought scheduled 10-round championship contest here Monday. It was the first time that White, vet eran of 145 fights, had been knocked out and it was his sixth chance at the lightweight title. The battle, fought before a capacity crowd of more than 12,000 persons, was finished amid tremendous excite ment, and as the end neared it looked as if White was going to etay the limit and perhaps hold the champion even. White carried the fight to Leonard and had the better of five or the first seven rounds. He fought gamely and really surprised his admirers nntll Leonard landed a smash on the chin early in the ninth. He knocked and partially shoved Leonard through the ropes in the fifth round. The champion fell outside the ring and the referee had counted for four before Leonard was pushed back. The Finish for White. A short, right-handed punch to the chin was a start of White's finish. The Chicagoan dropped to his hands and knees, and although dazed, refused to take the count. Leonard saw White v.as badly stunned and rained blows vith both hands on his weakened opponent. White was knocked down four more times, once going half way through the ropes before he was counted out. White was completely out and fell to the floor, once after his seconds had picked him up. As the referee raised Leonard's hand as a sign of victory the crowd surged to the ring side. Injuring sever al spectators, breaking seats and tear ing down telegraph wires. Police could not hold back the crowd from the champion's corner, and Leonard was forced to remain in the ring a quarter cf an hour receiving congratulations. Josh Bllllnga The other day Steve 0Neil, 8tar catcher of the Indians, was forced to leave his team ior several days because of the illness of his wife. Leslie Nunamaker, former Red Sox and Brown catcher, got oodles of praise by the way in which he filled the gap. both in his hitting and receiving. And no doubt a lot of fans remarked: "I guess that was a bad deal when we got him." It was a good deal all right. But Josh Billings, the catcher the Indians sent to the Browns when they got Nunamaker from the far west team, is making the deal look just as eweet at the other end. John isn't catching regular not with Hank Severoid sound in wind and limb. But he stands out right now as the favorite pinch hitter on the tram and when he breaks in quite often behind the plate he holds up his end there, too. He is batting around .333. He collected twenty blows his first elxty I5mee up. Josh hails from Grantville, Kan., and is about thirty. He broke into fame first with th Quincy club of the Three Eyes League when h knocked two catchers out of a job with one swing of his bat. Josh's swat was a homrr in his first game and the other catchers were released that afternoon. The Cleveland Association got him the year it was helping kepp the Feds out of Cleveland later the Indians took Josh on. Miller-Kempers Dope Pot and Win Their First The Richmond Miller-Kempers pulled the grand surprise of the Suburban baseball league, defeating Centerville 3 to 1. at Centerville. Th game wa3 hard foueht. requiring 11 innings for the Em-Kays to cop. Centerville tied the score in the later innincs. but was unable to 1n nnv. j thing with Madge. Miller-Kemper hurler, after that. Mike Knott and Bowman composed the Centerville battery. KEEP IP TO THE MARK Oood health is impoBslble when the kidneys are weak, overworked or diseased.
