LEAF TOBACCO IMPORTS i FALL OFF IN MONTH Less leaf tobacco It being imported Into the United Spates, according to the official Government figures representing shipments for the month of April. 1920. leaf from the Philippine Islands showing a decline of 4,373 pounds, or 8 per cent, compared with
the corresponding month last year. Wrapper leaf from all countries de creased 6,926 pounds, or 12 per cent, and all other leaf decreased 2,957.229 pounds, or 25 per cent, making a total decrease of leaf tobacco imports for the month of 2,968,528 pounds, or 35 per cent. The total value fell off $3,020,174, or 39 per cent. For the 10 months of the fiscal year ended with April. 1920, Philippine leaf shows a decrease of 3.876,987 pounds, or 89 per cent; wrapper leaf from all countries decreased 965,571 pounds or 12 per cent; all other leaf Increased 9,963,481 pounds, or "14 per cent The total increase for the ten-month period was reduced by the April figures to 5,120,923 pounds or 7 per cent. EATON', O.. July 3.- Preble county has 6,922 school children between, the ages of 6 and 21, according; to figures compiled by County Auditor S. C. Hunt from returns from the 1920 school enumeration. The enumemtion In 1919 was 5,802, or a gain of 120 this year over last year. Of the total number this year, 3,052 are males and 2,870 females. The total enumeration in the townships this year is 2.837. of which number 1.459 are males aid 1,378 are females. Totalof the various villages is 3.085, of which number 1,693 are males and 1,492 are females. Contract for Co. Gravel. Contract has been entered into by the county commissioners with Herbert Harshman to furnish gravel from his farm in Somers township for county road repair work. The contract calls for 5.000 cubic feet of gravel at 25 cents a cubic yard and an additional 3.000 cubic yards at the same price if desired. Clarke Bros., Winchester, Ind., have been contracted with by the commissioners to excavate the gravel for 40 cents a cubic yard. Sues Burd for Two Note George Brumbaugh, local real estate man, has filed suit in common pleas court against Frank and Grace Burd to recover 160 alleged to represent a note. Brumbaugh's suit follows a 6uit filed by the Preble County National bank of Eaton, against Burd to recover J 1,500 on two notes. To Observe July 5 Independence day will be observed in Eaton, Monday. The banks, postoffice, county offices in the court house and city offices will be closed. It is expected business will practically be suspended during the day. No demonstration of any character has been arranged. Chautauqua la Advertised Advertising matter for the local chautauqua Is being distributed in Eaton and throughout Preble county. An advertising crew arrived here Friday and began operations. Dates of the chautauqua are July 6 to Aug. 1. Dr. Landis To Preach Dr. J. P. Landis, Ph. R., D. D., president of Bonebrake seminary, will preach here Sunday morning in the United Brethren church, upon the occasion of the annual home-coming to be observed by the church. The meeting will be an all-day affair. A basket lunch will be served at noon. Tobacco Dealers Taxed For the fiscal year ending the fourth Monday in May, last, dealers in cigarets in Preble county paid a total of $1 484.60 in taxes, as shown by records of the office of County Auditor S. C- Hunt. The total amount was contributed by nine dealers. In distribution of the cigar tax money the state receives $1,040.22. the infirmary, or poor fund, $182,29, the villages certain parts of $182.29, and the auditor and treasurer the 6um of ti29.70 for making the collection.
