DEMOCRAT, G. 0. P., TO RACE FOR SUFFRAGE (By Associated Press) , WASHINGTON, July 2. A race between the Democratic and Republican parties for the honor of enfranchising the women of the nation in time for their participation in the November elections today appeared probable. The two parties, the indications were, would work through legislatures in which each has a majority; the Democrats through the Tennessee legislature and the Republicans through the Vermont law making body. Governor Roberts of Tennessee in response to an appeal from President "Wilson announced several days ago that he would call the legislature of his state In special session to act on the federal suffrage amendment. Governor Clement, of Vermont, after a conference here last night with Senator Harding, the Republican candidate for president, intimated that he would call the Vermont legislature known to be favorable toward the suffrage amendment in session to act on a ratification resolution. The Tennessee legislature will be i called to meet Aug. 9, Governor 3ioberts informed the national women's party last night. May Call It Soon. Governor Clement did not state definitely when the Vermont legislature i would be called but the impression prevailed among those informed as to .his conference with Senator Harding that the session would be convened at an early date. The Vermont governor In a formal ; statement issued after his conference rwith Mr. Harding, in fact did not openiy siaie mat ne contemplated calling an extra session, but declared that despite his reluctance to permit a change in the fundamental laws without deliberation "there was a preponderance of Republican advice in avor of a special session." Senator Harding In a statement issued simultaneously with that of Governor Clement, said the Vermont governor "understands I was not trespassing on his authority in advising him that I would be glad to see Vermont Republicans close up the great franchise reform." MURRAY That the female of the species la more deadly than the male, Blanche Sweet contends was proven by Eve, who created the leading feminine role in the tragedy of the Garden of Eden "Eve," says the beautiful star, "led a dull life with Adam, who was the first Bolshevist. He never worked and was so lazy he wouldn't even pluck bis own fig lea'f garments, but waited until they fell from the tree. "The monotony of their Bolshevic existence began to pall, and Eve, after careful deliberation, decided to eat of the forbidden fruit and see if she couldn't start something and get her name into print." Miss Sweet recently decided to discard the heavier emotional types of drama with which her name has been associated in the past, to play the lighter roles enabling her to display her subtle comedy methods. In "The Deadlier Sex," an original story by Bayard Veiller, showing the last half of the week at the Murray theatre, Blanche Sweet enacts the role of Mary Willard, a modern American girl who proves to a stubborn, headstrong male being that the opposite sex can be, at one and the same time, the weaker, the deadlier and the lovelier. WASHINGTON Owen Moore is said to have found his starring vehicle de luxe In "The Desperate Hero." a Selznick picture, which will be the featured attraction at the Washington theater for two days beginning today. No one can act pure farce better than he, and in the picture, as Henry Baird, a young New York newspaperman, very much in love and very much in debt, he is given an opportunity to demonstrate his best. The picture was filmed in the west 'nnH anm. of the high spots of the production are a complete country fair, a fire the hero's automobile both the interiors and exteriors of some of the handsomest homes in California, and Owen Moore's juggling act with a bowl of gold fish. Gloria Hope plays opposite the star as leading woman. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE The new bill which opened yesterday the Murray for the last half has an appeal to all music lovers. Blanche and Ray McKay open the show with a singing, talking and dancing act followed by Weller, O'Donnell and Westfield, three men with very good voices who are heard in popular selections. Almond and Dumont close the show with a combination singing, talking and instrumental offering which has merit. The lady possess an excellent soprana voice, while the man is an artist upon the cornet. Their selections were loudly applauded. Blanche Sweet is the screen attraction in "The Deadlier Sex," a fighting picture of the great Northwest which holds interest throughout. News of Railroad and Industrial Workers "Watch your time," is the general order to all railroad men of the Pennsylvania railroad during the first two weeks of July. I! The Farm and the Farmer BY WILLIAM R. SANBORN C. E. Anderson, of Spartansburg, reports that he has 18 acres of the best timothy he has ever seen, weed free, and will go two tons to the acre. Also that he has some very fine wheat about ready to cut, and 26 acres of corn which couldn't look better, considering lateness of season. He laments, however, that his big apple orchard is entirely minus fruit. It is expected that some wheat will be cut in the Eldorado district on Saturday "and some may even get in with the binder on Friday afternoon, though that is not certain," said H. L. Trick, on Thursday. Mr. Trick reports that wheat looks good, seems to be filling well and 6hould be of fine milling quality, so far as may be judged now." As to old wheat, the price is $2.55 per bushel." Wheat Filling Well. The elevator folks at Lynn state that while no old wheat is now coming In that they have taken In quite a lot of it in the past three weeks. Have not yet made a price for the new crop. Harley'Billman, manager of the elevator at New Madison, said on Thursday that no wheat had been cut so far, but that two or three "had allowed they might get into it on Friday, their lucky day." Mr. Billman said that their corn is nothing to brag about as yet, but that they have had all the rain needed of late and it is doing better. The Report From Camden. E. C. Eikenberry stated Thursday that a little wheat had been cut in the Camden district on Monday, and cutting has continued from day to day. "The harvest will be on in full force next week," said he, "and there will be quite a lot of good quality grain, in our opinion." In naming one farmer who had finished harvesting, he said, "John White has about 40 acres of good wheat In shock." Among others who are busy with binders near Camden are: Ral-ph P. Baker, who will finish cutting 22 acres on Friday and Sam Keller, who will complete the harvesting of 42 acres by Friday night. Minor Meyers had 32 acres of fine wheat in shock on Thursday night. All of these report wheat of good quality and all live on Route 3, Camden. Cutting Rye at Losantville. Elevator folks at Losantville report some rve being cut but no wheat thus far. Losantville needs more rain." WHO TO BEAT (Continued from Page One) stances, and that McAdoo gave them federal jobs In many. The entire situation is in a state of flux, with many men working feverishly to secure the element that will solidify it, crystalize into a body that will command sufficient votes to nominate,, or be commanded into sufficient votes, which will be satisfactory, either way. "McAdoo Isn't beaten yet, and won't be until the combination against him Is proved up in the some way," is the cry on both 6ldes. However, McAdoo is tangible and the man they seek to oppose him is intangible. The average politician is a material and practical person and does not align readily with what is not apparent, nor stay long if he does so align. I McAdoo is the one concrete force in this situation at the time of writing. All others canvassed as opponents have those who remain in only on sufferance, are In suspension fluid, not crystalized into winning candidacy. It Is impossible to beat some one with no one.
