Wilt in Cabbage

E. E. RICE, GARDEN SUPERVISOR Dear Sir: I have your letter relative to the j leaves of your cabbages turning yeljlow and finally dropping off. I am I quite certain that the disease which

lis attacking these plants is what is

known as wilt, yellows, or yellowsides. There is, at the present time, no known control for the disease when it makes its appearance In the plants. The only possibility of controlling the trouble has been found to be disinfecting the seeds as is done with wheat and disinfecting the soil, preferably by sterilizing it with steam. However, thi3 would be too much trouble for you and all that you can do i3 to pull out and destroy those that are showing the difficulty at this time so as to prevent the "organism which causes the disease from becoming established in the soil and being a source of future trouble. This wilt is caused by a fungus belonging to the genus fusarium. Closely related species of the genus Fusarium cause numerous diseases of other crops among which may be mentioned the dry rot of potatoes, the scab of wheat, the wilt of flax, potatoes and tomatoes; but the presence of cabbage wilt in your soil, so far as it is known at the present time, will not prevent you from growing other plants like

tomatoes or potatoes in such soil. I I would advise you to write to your j representative in congress for a list I of the Farmers' Bulletins that are available for distribution. From this jlist you can obtain free of charge, ,from your representative, such bulletins as relate to the culture, the diseases, and the insects that affect th I various crops which you are attempt -ing to grow in your school garden. 1 jam sure that your representative will jdo all that he can to obtain these bulletins for you. These will aid you in j your work. Yours very truly. I HARRY F. DIETZ ' Assistant Entomologist.
