AMERICANIZATION IS THEME 2F TALK BY MISS ADDAMS
"KJH the idea of looking at imrniSnmts as a class rather than individTiaLs and a large step will be taken in Americanization," said Miss Jane Addams, of Hull House, Chicago, in an Americanization talk before the Friends' Reconstruction Reunionists in Lindley Hall at Earlham College, Thursday night. Her talk was the second in a year's time before such a group of Friends. The other was at a Friends' relief headquarters in France when she was Investigating conditions abroad late last fall. Many of the same American Friends' Service Committee members, again In civilian clothes were present Thursday nightMiss Addams said she had noted 'more tendency on the part of Americans to look at immigrant foreigners as a whole and not as individuals during the past few months than ever before. "We must not look at all Austrians as simply Austrians devoid of diversified individuals; neither must we look at Chinamen, nor Czechs, nor Italians enmasse. Attempts to spread the English language and an understanding of American history among foreigners "was characterized as estimable, but insufficient, by Miss Addams. She plead that something deeper and more liuman must go hand in hand "with this. A considerable portion of the lecture was devoted to a comparison of the Europe as she saw it last fall, and Europe as she viewed it 35 years ago. "Then, nations were looking toward a probable United States of Europe, she rraid. Today, she found every nation, suspicious of its neighbors, even -within itself breaking into divisions "wrought from religious, economic, or other standpoints. "And yet today thry are using the Tame arguments for this breaking that were used in favor of cohesion 25 ears ago," said she. Fifty former members of the Friends reconstruction units abroad are regis.tered for the reunion, but a large -tWmber of people from town attended Miss Addams's lecture Thursday night. Bhe arrived in the city at 4 p. m. and was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. William Dudley Foulke, until 5 o'clock when Fhe attended an informal reception on the West campus at Earlham. She was a guest at Earlham for dinner.

(Copyright. 1920, by The Wheeler Syndicate, Inc.) My Daughter, hearken unto the Revolt of a Bachelor, who perceiveth his Peril, and walketh warily amongst women. "Help, help!" cryeth the Bachelor. "Now is the season of mine eternal vigilance! "For lo. all the world conspireth to lead into Bondage, and to fasten a ball and chain upon my feet!. "Behold, one by one, I witness the downfall of my friends; and they seek to lure me with them, and to entice me to their weddings! "I am arrayed in a long-tailed coat, and decked with a foolish flower, and made to lead frilly damsels down the w-hite-ribboned aisle, and to sit beside fluttering dowager3 at-the bridal feast. "Lo, I dare not clasp a maiden's hand, lest there be a HOOK within it; I cannot permit her arms to encircle rr.y neck, lest she place a YOKE thereon.
"For, this is the season of folly and flirtation and silly sentiment, when even the moon and the waves, and the perfumed winds, and ALL the elements are banded together for a Single Man's undoing! "Goto! Goto! Ye Snares in Petticoats, ye Temptations in Tulle and Talcum! "Ye may lead me beside the blue waters in broad sunlight, but ye cannot lure me into a canoe, by moonlight! not talk unto me of LOVE, and tell me of your soul-yearnings. "Ye may cover me with Bcorn or with pearl-powder, when I dance with you; but ye shall not anoint me with violet extract, and hyacinth sachet, that ye may mark me for your OWN! "Ye may hold my hands but ye shall not read the lines thereof; neither shall ye MANICURE them. For I am wise to all your little "stunts," and I know the end thereof. "Yea, by THESE things fell the Benedicts! "Oh, ye match-making matrons, I will bring you ices, and sit beside you between dances, and hearken unto your servant problems; but think not to talk to me of your Daughters. For I shall not listen! "Verily, verily, all my words shall be discreet, and all mine actions cautious and self-restrained. "I shall insulate my vanity against you, and put my sentiment away in camphor, and my affections in cold storage, until the season of the Lovemoth hath passed. FURS and MYSTERY By PALAIS ROYAL When you buy furs, it is well to invest in them, rather than to speculate. There's a marked difference between the two. Whenever a fur piece is greatly underpriced, there is a reason for it, and do not permit the dealer to tell you that it's because the weather is warm or because you're a favored customer, or any such tomfoolery. Find out why! Take fox skins, for example. A legitimate fur dealer may show you a fine large muff and throw, made from fine peltries of unusual size, and quote you a very fair price on It. Before you purchase, you remember that So-and-So, around the corner are having a heavily advertised Sale. You decide, as is your privilege, to go and see what they are offering. Fine! But they are all ready for you and show you a set at a lower price and apparently identically the same as you were looking at in the legitimate store, but which is really worth only half as much. "Sour grapes?" Not so here is the little darkle in the woodpile. An unscrupulous furrier " can take a very small fox skin, or most any other kind of peltrle, and expand It to about twice Its size, but its Intrinsic value does not expand accordingly. The skin is laid face downward and slit many, many times down the wider part by cuts about half an inch apart and running parallel to each other. Common sheep skin strips are then cut and inserted in these silts and sewed along each edge, making the back look like a bird's-eye view of a freight yard, although the deception cannot be detected on the fur side owing to the great density of the fur. When such a piece is made into a muff or throw, the padding and the lining prevent one from feeling the many seams inside the skin, but if you will press the piece hard between the two hands and rub slowly, you will have the sensation of passing your fingers over a silken covered wash board. So, after all. you find that the genuine article in the honest man's store represented true value, while the "special reduction" was no reduction at all but decidedly an inflation. Use care to shun the animal that "grows" to twice its size after it is killed, and beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing. To Be Continued. Copyright, 1919.
