SLNERAL. PERSHING wants a rest. He has spent most of his life in the army, and now that there are no wars or rumors of wars ho has asked the war department to permit him to re tire. He may enter private business. General John J. Pershing was born In Linn county, Missouri, September 13, 1860. He was graduated from West Point in 1886. A veteran of numerous campaigns. General Pershing fought the Apache Indians in New Mexico and Arizona in 1SS6, and the Sioux in the Da-GEN-PERSUINCr kotas in 1901. He was with the Tenth cavalry 'n the Santiago campaign, Cuba, and there formed the acquaintance of President Roosevelt, who was later instrumental in bringing about his Tapid promotion. General Pershing in 1902 fought the Moros; and in 1906 was with Kuroki s army in Manchuria. He served on the general staff from 1903 until 1906; was later commander of the department of Mindanao and governor of Moro province, and in June, 1913. defeated the Moros in battle at Bagsae. General Pershing was in command of the expeditionary force which went to the Mexican border in 1913 and pursued the bandit Villa in Mexico. The crowning achievement of Pershing's career was of course his work as commander of the American expeditionary forces in the World war. He has been decorated by all of the ali ;pfj governrnents, and received the thanks of congress, which conferred i upon lum the highest rank in tne j army.
