WASHINGTON. , William S. Hart la at the Washington theatre this week in one of the 'best pictures of his career. It is callf ed "The Toll Gate." and is a thrilling fand unusually appealing story of the ragged days of the olden west. Mr. Hart appears as Black Deering, head of a bandit gang, but an honorable man beneath his rough exterior. Deering is anxious to abandon his life of pillaging, but Jordan, his chief lieutenant, urges him to one more hold-up. It is a frame-up and Deering is captured. But he manages to escape and performs several thrilling and hazards ous feats in order to elude the sheriff's posse that is trailing him. Eventually Deering reaches safety in a clearing inhere the cabin of Mary

Biown is located. She proves to be the deserted wife of Jordan. Under her influence Deering resolves to do the right thing and gives himself up to the sherifT. As a volunteer, he resrues a detachment of deputies from Jordan and kills the traitor. As a reward, th sheriff allows him his freedom, provided he departs south into Mexico. Bill Hart's famous Pinto pony comes in for a good share of the attention and takes a noteable part In many of the thrilling scenes. MURRAY. Anyone desiring to know how to be "Respectable by Proxy" will find the following recipe one with a spicy flavor: Take- one cheap, flirtatious actress and a gay young blade who thinks he knows women. Join them in matrimony and shake well, causing a separation without the aid of the divorce court. Then take another actress differing in temperament from the first, but broken in health and needing a comfortable home. Place her in the youth's ancestral southern home as his sorrowing widow. Stir -well with a villain wbo thinks he is the rightful heir. Add the spice by bringing homo the jouth whose reported death was an error and introducing him to the "wife" he never married. Pierce these two hearts with a Cupid's dart, and then add the real wife. Throw this mixtuie into J. Stuart Blackton's production cauldron, direct It well with Sylvia Breamer and Robert. Gordon as the leads, jad servo on the screen at the Murray theatre, as Respectable by Proxy," the feature attraction. MURRETTE. "Old Iady 21," a superb picturizatlon of that quaint and amusing play by Rachel Crothers, is showing on the tic re en at the Murrette Theatre. A large and enthusiastic audience delighted in the clever character portrayal given by Kinma Dunn, who is Ftarred in this Metro screen version

of the drama which has enjoyed phenomenal success on the speaking stage under the management of Lee Kugel. "Old Lady 21," although It of course lacks the violent action and so-called "thrills" of melodrama and the hectic "movie" serials, proved to be an absorbing story of devotion that captured the entire sympathy of the spectators and held their attention spellbound to the end. It came as a refreshing change from sex plays and murder mysteries and revealed that life has its sweetness and tender moments, as a recompense for its struggles, Its cares and its petty Jealousies.
