QUAKERS ARE ONLY MEDIATORS IN IRISH SCRAP M. HENKE

By MARY HENKE LONDON. June 1. Two thiand Quakers stand as the only tolerated ! medlary between the antagonistic elements In Ireland. To the Irishman, the Quaker Is neither fish nor fowl In the matter of religion. Consequently, the members of the Friends church have been able to hold the good will of both parties. The Irish Protestants do not consider the Quaker church as a definite Protestant institution; but as it is not allied to the Catholic church, and as most Quakers In Ireland are of English or Scotch descent, the ulster-men 1 are on good terms with the Irish Quakers and have conflence in them. On the other hand the Irish Catholics are friendly with the Quakers "because they are not affiliated w4th the Protestants, and because the Quakers themselves as victims of persecution, were at one time in a condition which the Irish nationalist compares to his own. In Dublin a young Friend who Is at the same time an open pacifist and a supporter of the nationalist cause, holds "open house" for Sinn Fein leaders where they may confer with each other and meet Englishmen and foreigners trying to get at the bottom of the Irish trouble.

Although he is not a Sinn Feinerj

End is opposed'to violent methods, he holds a position of influence with the national party and its chiefs. Seek Him Out for Counsel. Down in the couth of Ireland, a imild, kindly old Quaker Is sought out .by Ulstermen and Sinn Fein, Catho- " i lie priests and Church of England vicars All parties show respect for his council and his views are honored. Throughout the island members of the i Friends church are urging peace and are heard quietly because their attitude Is recognized to be impartial. ! Recently the Quakers In Ireland Issued a message to their countrymen, protesting the violence on one side and the injustice on the other. English Quakers generally support the nationalistic claims of Ireland, and condemn the militaristic measures used against the Sinn Fein by the i government. They are strongly opposed, however, to the Sinn Fein "reign of terror." "We've talked self determination for Ireland for years," said a prominjent English Quaker. "It's just a ques- ! tlon of 'Keep your promise.' " Danger to the frit-ndly relations be-

j tween America and England was emphasized at the London Yearly Meeting recently held, by William C. ' Allen of Philadelphia. Friends were urged to do all in their i power to counteract unfavorable influonce and to draw the two nations clos- ; er together. The speaker said he I had met much anti-American propa- ; ganda in the British colonies. Mr. and Mrs. Beede There A number of Americans attended the London yearly meeting, including Mr. and Mrs. William C. Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Elkinton and Edward Wissler of Philadelphia. Dr. Jesse Holmes of Swarthmore college, on the commission for Friends' war victim

relief; B. Willis Beede, of Richmond, Ind., secretary of the Friends foreign mission board, and Mrs. Beede. Dr. and Mrs. Nitobe, formerly of Philadelphia, now living In London, were also present. English Friends are not aligning themselves with Mr. 'Pussyfoot' Johnson in his efforts to make England dry. While most of the Friends are

'teetotalers' they are not in favor of any drastic action to force prohibition declaring that the country is unprepared for it. and that total prohibition in England at the present time would

mean trouble. There Is a tenaency with English Friends to lump temperance along with other social reforms.

instead of attempting to deal with it as a single problem. Perm Pageant Is Prepared A pageant depicting the life of William Penn is beine Dlanned for the

international Young Friends confer-.

ence that is to follow the world Friends neaco ronfereno In London.

The Young Friends will meet at Jor-l dans, the old home of William Pcnn, j

irom August Z4 to M. Subjects announced for the conference are: "The Upshot of the War World Problems"; "Christ and Imperialism"; "Our Duty to Primitive Races"; "Our Quaker Heritage"; "The International Quaker Church"; "The Christian Attitude to Evil". Americans who attend the London conference are expected to stay over for the international summer school to be held at the Isle of Guernsey, Sept. 4 to 17. "Problems of Faith and Modern Solutions"; "Problems of Society" and "Problems of Internationalism", the last to deal with League of Nations economic protection and other world problems, will be discussed.

Jail Gambling Case is Continued at Capital (By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 15 The

case of William (Puss) Meinert, or Evansville, formerly a federal prisoner at the Marion county jail, charged with

keeping a gambling house at the jail was continued under advisement by Special Judge James M. BerryhiH in criminal court today.

PRISONERS USE COAL CAR IN VAIN ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., June 15. One prisoner was at liberty today and two others serving life sentences were back within the Missouri state prison

walls after a thrilling attempt to escape in which the three climbed on a coal car and sent it crashing down an incline through the prison gate. The car overturned outside the wall and John Snead, sentenced to life Imprisonment for murder, was captured immediately. Ora Lewis, sentenced to life Imprisonment for murder and robbery, abandoned the oar just before it hit the gate and was returned to his cell. William Stender, serving" ten years for robbery, got away.

The McAdoo campaign for the presidential nomination has been under the surface within the Democratic party, but it has been successful. McAdoo has ' not many instructed delegates, ! but tbe number of uninstructed delegates, particularly from the south, who will be found vot

ing for him at San Francisco will prove surprising to many. Today McAdoo Is regarded as one of the two o r three leading contenders for the presidential n o ruination. William Glbbs McAdoo was born October 31, 1863, near Marietta, Ga. He was educated in the University of Tennessee and

was deputy clerk of United States cir

cuit court in Tennessee in 1882.

In 1885, he was admitted to the bar, practicing in Chattanooga until 1892, when Ije moved to New York. Became president of the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad company, which completed tunnels under the Hudson river, sometimes known a3 the "McAdoo tubes"; was delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1912; was vice chairman of the national committee in the 1912 campaign, and was appointed secretary of the treasury in President Wilson's cabinet. He was named director general of

railroads after this country entered the war. He resigned from the cabinet in 1918, and a few days later from the directorship of railroads, assigning as his reasons the inadequacy of compensation in governmental work and his own need for a rest. Mr. McAdoo's first wife, who was

Sarah Hazelhurst Fleming of Chattanooga, died in 1912, and, in 1914, in the White House, he married Eleanor Randolph Wilson, the president's daughter.

Cant Travel by Parcels Post Now, Koon's Ruling Richmond children who may think of going to see Grandma or Aunt by parcel post, in the romantic fashion sometimes reported by the newspapers, are out of luck. Children may not be transported as parcel post, first assistant postmaster Koons ruled in passing upon two applications received at the Washington city postoffice for the transportation through the mails. Mr. Koons said children clearly did not come within the classification of harmless live animals which do not require food or water while in transit. One of the applications received by the Washington postmaster was from a nine year old girl who entered the main postoffice and asked that she be sent to Kentucky. EXAMS FOR OFFICERS TO BE HELD ON JULY 7 Examinations for appointment to commissions in the United States army will begin July 7, the places, where examinations will be held to be named by the war department. The examination will be both physical and mental and will be before boards and officers appointed by the department gommanders. All persons who have not made application for appointment heretofore, must do so through the proper channels, before June 23, it is announced.

The Theatres

Reginald Baker, achieves the same sumptuousness which be infused into Geraldine Farrar's recent photoplays, "The Flame of the Desert" and "The World and Its Woman." Both interiors and exteriors are a triumph of realistic stage settings. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE. Arthur Hauk's Sunshine Revue which is showing at the Murray with their miniature musical comedy productions entered upon their final week here Monday night with "Hiram at the Cabaret," with an entire change of wardrobe, scenery, songs and dances, etc. The Four Musical Kings offered a complete change of program. Tom Collins, who is scoring strongly a;j a comedian has a heap of new tunes he offers with the aid of his big "bass viol." These four clever chaps who alternately sing and play various musical instruments have put over a tremendous hit. Miss Helen Kennedy, the petite soubrette, -will be heard In new "jazz" songs, and the screen feature will be Mary Miles Minter in "Nurse Marjorie," a five-reel Realart production. Thursday another entire change of play will be offered when the samo players will offer the comedy "My Wife's Troubles." In conjunction with all the specialty artists who will offer complete changes in this bill, Paquin's Models will appear again in an entire new series of poses. The pictorial feature this half will be Earl Williams in "The Fortune Hunter," taken from the stage success of the same name. MURRETTE. With a story, star and production that bid fair to set the pace for screen

attractions for months to come, "Passions Playground," adapted from the famous story of Monte Carlo, "The Guests of Hercules." by C. N. and A. M. Williamson, is showing at the Murrette Theatre. The infinite opportunities for plcturization of the famous gambling story induced Katherine MacDonald, "the American beauty," to select it as the starring vehicle for her latest release under her contract with First National Exhibitors' Circuit. Perhaps no other Actionized work dealing with the attempts of titled personages and wealthy men and women from all parts of the world to stake their fortunes and titles upon the chance-devices at Monte Carlo has met with the popularity of "The Guests of Hercules." MURRAY. One of the many interesting and thrilling scenes in "Nurse Marjorie," Mary Miles Minter"s new play for Realart, deplct3 a turbulent strike in an English shipyard. "Nurse Marjorie" will be shown as the principal at

traction of the program at the Murray Theatre the first half of the week. The picture is an adaptation of Israel Zangwill's recent play and is well adapted to the talents of the beautiful Miss Minter. William Desmond Taylor directed the production, and an excellent cast appears in support of the star. The story is one of the most appealing that has come from the distinguished of the author of, "The Melting PoL" " " )

The only sure way to get rid of dandruff is to dissolve it, then you destroy it entirely. To do this, get about four ounces of ordinary liquid arvon; apply it at night when retiring; use enough to moisten the scalp and rub it in gently with the finger tips. Do this tonight, and by morning, most if not all, of your dandruff will be gone, and three or four more applications will completely dissolve and entirely destroy every single sign and trace of it, no matter how much dandruff you may have.

You will find, too, that all itching and digging of the scalp will stop at once, and your hair will be fluffy, lustrous, glossy, silky and soft, and look and feel a hundred times better. You can get liquid arvon at any drug store. It i3 inexpensive and never fails to do the work. Advertise-mpnt.

Claims wonderful relief from taking Dreco, the new remedy, which is doing so much good around here. "It is wonderful how my catarrh has been relieved since I've been taking Dreco," declared Mrs. Ora Lewis, living at 221 X. Second St., Richmond, Ind. "For a long time I've suffered from this annoying disease. Every morning I'd get up with my head and nose stopped up and it would be some time before I could get them cleared up.

My breath was very offensive and the

dripping kept me hawking and clearing my throat all the time. I often had roaring noises in my ears which finally got so bad that I felt I was growing deaf. "My liver was very inactive which frequently gave me dizzy spells and headaches. I often had dull, aching pains in my back, directly oved my kidneys. My muscles ached and my joints were sore. "I have finished a treatment of Dreco and it is truly a wonderful medicine. I never saw anything go right to the spot and bring such instant relief. I believe the first dose helped me. I find every morning that my head is clear as a bell. My nose is no longer filled up. My breath is pure and sweet and the dripping has ceased so that I am not continually clearing my throat. My liver now acts well; no more headaches nor dizziness and my kidneys seem as Ftrong and regular as ever in my life. I hope every one who suffers from catarrh in any form and the complications which go with it will try Dreco, for it will do them good." Dreco is not an experiment. It is a safe, harmless qombination of natural extracts and contains minerals, acids cr salts. It is Nature's medicine and can be taken with safety into the most delicate system Dreco is inexpensive and is now dispensed by modern drug stores almost everywhere. All good druggists now sell Dreco and it is highly recommended in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite's Seven Drug Stores. Advertisement.
