MURRETTE ' -While you're praising Charles Ray for the remarkably true-to-life email town atmosphere of "Red Hot Dollars," his new picture at the Murrette Theatre this weekdon't forget Julien Josephson, who wrote the story. Mr. Josephson is a genial Jack-of-all-tradea who drifted into motion pictures by mere chance. He knows country villages like a book, because he has lived In one most of his life. .He started as a rural merchant, conducting the general store In his native town in southern Oregon. In that way he earned enough to put himself through Stanford University. Graduating, he took up store-keeping again, but tried to inject into it some of the ultra-modern features that he - had picked up in college. The result was financial failure. . A flyer in politics shortly afterward proved a "flivver" and Mr. Josephson Journeyed to San Francisco and got a Job as clerk hi a shoe store. All the while he had been dabbling In literature, though with little success, chiefly because he was writing about faraway people and things. He finally reversed his tactics and tried a 6tory about the folks he knew back in Oregon. Some one read It and suggested Thomas H. Ince as a possible buyer. Mr. Ince accepted It instantly as a vehicle for Charles Ray and shortly afterward Mr. Josephson Joined the Ince staff, turning out such Ray stories as "The Egg Crate Wallop," "Crooked Straight'.' and "Red Hot Dollars." MURRAY A subterranograpb, an indicator on the principle of the seismograph, with a needle that wavers In registering foot shocks instead of tracing a line on a chart, was installed in an underground cellar at Bayside, L. L, in order to take certain important scenes in "The Flaming Clue," which is showing at the Murray theater. The ground around' the old Taylor estate was threaded with a network of fine wires, which recorded the footstep shocks of a person walking about the place. It was an expensive proposition, . but Vitagraph believes in carrying out every detail with accuracy that films may be instructive as well as entertaining. In connection with this It might be added that the underground cellar was constructed according to a description of a famous counterfeiters' den found in police archives. The director constantly consulted a detective in order that real atmosphere might be injected into the production, and the results are pronounced by police officials as the most realistic ever filmed. Harry T. Morey, who plays the stellar role, equipped himself for the part by apprenticing himself to a detective for a period of 24 hours. After that experience Mr. Morey declared that he had lost all desire to become a detective. WASHINGTON. "The Woman and the Puppet," adapted from the 6tage success by the celebrated French authors, Pierre Louys and Pierre Frandaie, is Oeraldine Farrar's latest Goldwyn starring vehicle. This picture will be shown at the - Washington Theatre, beginning Sunday. The plot is laid in Spain and centers around Concha; a beautiful and wilful Spanish cigarette girl. A rich man bribes her mother and endeavors to use Concha as a toy for his whims, but the girl uses her own initiative and leaves her home to dance in a wharf cafe. When the rich man at length discovers her, it is to find her dancing, half dressed, for tome English traveling gentleman. Don Mateo can no longer believe her to be the virtuous maiden who repulsed his advances. She convinces him that his suspicion is wrong and unwarranted. Jealousie3, quarrels and tricks

of whim carry the lovers through a series of clashes until a real understanding 13 reached. The scenario for this colorful picture was written by no less a person than J. W. Hawkes, Gdldwyn's scenario editor, who would not trust the adaption of this famous stage play to anyone else. The supporting cast for "The Woman and the Puppet" Includes Lou Tellegen, Geraldine Farrar's husband, Christina Pereda, the well known Spanish dancer, Macey Harlam, Milton Ross and Mme. Rose Dion, a pupil of the famous Sarah Bernhardt

"The Woman and the Puppet" presents the fiery Farrar in the part of a cigarette girl in Seville a study in feminine character that is amazingly penetrating. No other actress in America could portray the wilful Concha like Geraldine Farrar. The swift play of her moods, the unyielding pride of her spirit, the bursts of coquetry, the tantalizing glimpses of sheer wickedness it is a performance that rivals in warmth and color ner world-famous rendition of "Carmen" on the operatic stage.
