A National Scandal That's 'what the Indianapolis Star calls the Bergdoll case, .and most people will agree with the censure. His escape has not been satisfactorily explained by the War Department. Details about the liberties he enjoyed While he was in prison must rankle in the minds of the soldiers who had to accustom themselves to strict discipline while they were in the service. "Congress will be more profitably employed than is usually the case in the multiplicity of official investigations if it goes to the bottom of the Bergdoll affair," says the Star. "There seems little doubt that the escape of Bergdoll was possible because he had money and that he was granted privileges which would have been withheld from a poor man. The episode
Today's. Talk By George Matthew Adam DO THE VAST THINGS Men get their great thrills from the larger things of life whether or not they succeed. It is much better to fail in a big undertaking than to win a Email one. To attempt things, which seem at the start to be much beyond us, inspires us to put our iighest abilities to the test. As we go--we grow. And as we grow, we gain momentum. Do vast things. It takes aoout the same sort of ability to do the small thing as the big one but the big one requires greater courage and will. Sweep the obstacles away. Have a definite goal, and center your soul upon it. Both welcome and merit responsibility. It is what makes the big man. Master the trivial so that it may have no worry for you, and so that your mind may move in a wide path. Think big and you can't help but act big. Your own thoughts place you. Either they make you their slave or else you make them make you their master and you dominant, full of free expression, knowing how to decide and to conquer. Every day prepare to become capable and able.' It has always been true that vast achievements have followed vast failures. Somehow or other misfortune only acts as a fine spur to the one who has determined. Good Evening By Roy K. Moulton Most of the men in this country are brave to the point of recklessness. Hardly any of them wear suspenders any more. Phonograph discs can be used as pie plates. This is the most satisfactory use to which many of them can be put. THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE. constitutes an indictment of the war department and no explanation it is likely to make will excuse the gross incapacity of. its underlings. "The Bergdoll case has been notorious for years. In July, 1907," the young millionaire failed to return his draft questionnaire to the board at Philadelphia and for two and a half years nianaged to escape arrest. He was finally apprehended, tried and sentenced to five years at hard labor. ' Within two months of his incarceration he was permitted to quit the prison without adequate guards and go to his home for the announced purpose of finding a mysterious pot of gold hiding at the end of the, family rainbow. It is reported that he was permitted to attend the theaters and movies while on this vacation, and otherwise enjoy himself. The two

sergeants who were supposed to guard him may have, been honest enough, but they at least were so stupid that Bergdoll's escape with effected with surprising ease. "After Bergdoll disappeared the federal officials admitted that they had received information regarding a plot to escape, but they seem to have completely disregarded it. The handling of the case recalls Secretary Baker's lenity toward slackers, draft dodgers and conscientious objectors. The congressional committee should not consider this question from a political point of view, but probe thoroughly into every aspect of what constitutes a national scandal."

LIFE WAS A MISERY TO HER Says this Woman Until Re lieved by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Carrollton, Ky. "I suffered almost two years with female weakness. I could not walk any distance, ride or take any exercise at all without resting. If I swept the floor or did any kind of work it would bring my sickness on. I was weak and languid, had no energy, and life was a misery to me. I was under the care of a good phvsician for sev eral months and tried other remedies. I had read of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and decided to try it. After taking twelve bottles I found myself much improved and I took six more. I have never had any more trouble in that respect since. I have done all kinds of work and at present am an attendant at a State Hospital and am feeling fine. I have recommended ypur Vegetable Compound to dozens of my friends and shall always recommend it." LnxiAX Thaep, 824 S, 6th St.; Carrollton, Ky. Suffered great pains from rheumatism of the joints. His muscles were sore and stiff. Claims great relief since tak ing Dreco, the great herbal remedy. Whein the kidneys become wea r deranged it is impossible for them to separate the poisons from the blood as it passes through these organs; the kidneys are the filtering plant for the body; as the blood goes through they . strain out the poisons and pass them from the system. If these poisons stay in the blood such troubles as rheumatism, catarrh, sallow skin, cMzziness, headaches, etc., show up. The body requires a full supply of pure, rich, red blood, free from poisons, to keep it in a healthy condition. Dreco acts on the kidneys, keeping them strong to purify our blood supply. "The greatest relief I've known in years is since I took Dreco" said Mr. Lester S. Geyer. employed by the Star Piano Co., Richmond, Ind. "I've been full of rheumatism, aching joints, and sore muscles for a long time. "My hands were so sore I couldn't double up my fists; I couldn't bend over without having terrible pains in my back. "I've taken so much medicin that my stomach was all out of order. My food didn't digest and I got nervous and weak, but I'm feeling great once more for I've never seen anything take hold like Dreco did. It simply knocked out my troubles and put me on my feet again.
