Secretary Houston's Sermon "The secretary of the treasury in paying the bills which congress runs up goes far to explain the homely common sense with which recent secretaries of the treasury discuss taxation," says the New York Times. "The treasury has to borrow billions to make good the current deficit which congress permits and would enlarge if allowed by public opinion. The treasury also is embarrassed by the falsity of its position in urging discontinuance of such practices by its foreign debtors, who are much less able to do what the treasury cannot get done at home. What would happen to the nation's finances if there were not some such brake upon congress as the treasury exerts may be imagined from Secretary Houston's statement that he spends ninety-fold as much time in op

They carry fortunes around with them and are not aware of iti I remember many years ago listening to a great orator tell of a man who looked right over the top of l;1s fortunp every day. But he had to get mad at his collar button, and tear his collar all to pieces to find it out. Then because that sot hiravto thinking, he invented the collar button with a hinge bo that a man's collar could be removed with ease and that made him his fortune. Many men could stand for an hour on a street corner and get enough knowledge to write a useful book. But they would have to use their eyes and they would have to think. No matter where you go, no matter what you look at, no matter what you Lear if you do a lot of thinking alon with your looking, you can't help but j accumulate knowled When you look, look right thru things and be sure that you see them. It Is a good habit to get Into that of trying to visualize a thing after it has passed from the view of the eyes. Your eyes are really reporters to your brain And if thev do not report ac curately, they need training and that

If this would have occurred only once in a while we would not have thought much about it as everybody is subject, more or less, to headaches. But such was not the case. The headaches kept getting worse and came more frequently until at last it seemed as though lie had tiie headache most of the time. temptations to which it succumbs. Congress and the people waste more than enough to pay the treasury's floating debt; or to cheapen the cost of living by providing therailways with funds; or to relax the restrictions or credit which are checking production as the only other way of reducing inflation. "There is nothing above easy understanding in the secretary's sermon. If congress and the people would act upon his counsel the country would be spared such horrors of taxation as the excess profits tax, which the corporations shift

That evening she rang for a glass of milk and was surprised to see Martha appear with the glass grasped In her hand. "Oh, Martha," she said, "always bring the milk to me on a tray." Martha apologized and promised to remember in the future. The next evening the bell rang and the same request was made. This time Martha appeared with the tray and the milk emptied Into it. 4uXious to please, the curtsied and inquired: "Shall I bring a spoon, ma'am, or will you sup it up?" The girl was putting up the Easter decorations in the church, when the vicar happened to look in. Seeing some tacks lying about in the pulpit, he said: "You should not leave the tacks there, Katie. Now what would happen if I stepped on one in the middle of the sermon next Sunday?" "Oh, well," said Katie, "there would be one point you wouldn't linger on long, anyway." It docs seem a lot 6aner to just peel off the wornout skin when it loses its youthful inr and appearance now thnt thti nrr done so easily, safely, painlessly and economically. There is no trouble getting mercollzed wax at any drug store (an ounce will do), since its virtues have become generally known here, and there's no trouble using it just as you use cold cream, applying at night, washing it off next morning. The wax takes off the old scarf skin, in tiny flakes, a little each day. The new underskin which gradually appears, is velvety soft and beautifully white, radiant with girlish loveliness. If they abolish either part of the two-piece suit, we hope it will be the, coat. As a remedy, we would suggest that the candidates frame a few brief statements of their positions on certain matters. These could be printed on handbills and given to the audience and the speechmaking could go on v.ithout interruption. Back in the days when the tariff was the most exciting question before the people and was having a regular ouija board run of popularity, it was our embarrassing experience to ha seated on the stage during the speech of a distinguished United States senator who made one of the best speeches about nothing that we have ever heard, he tore all the tail feathers of the American eagle.
