SYRACUSE, N. Y.. May 29. Speculation was expressed here today as to the fine to be imposed on the John A. Roberts Company, of Utica, by Judge Harland B. Howe in United States Court next Wednesday. If the precedent set by Judge Martin Manton this morning in fining Weed's, Ic, clothiers, of Binghamton, $31,000 is followed, the Utica corporation may be ordered to pay close to $55,000 maximum which can be Imposed on the 11 counts. The Binghamton merchants were found to be guilty this morning on all of eight counts in the Federal indictment charging them with having profiteered. Six counts covered sales actually made and a fine of $5,000 was imposed for each of them. The charges in these counts were as follows: The sale of a suit of clothes costing $20 for $40. The sale of a suit costing $12.50 for $40. The defense disputed the cost price, claiming it was $21 instead of $12.50.
-The sale of another suit for $45, the
cost price being fixed at $23.50.
The sale of a suit costing $17.82 for
$45. The sale of a suit of clothes for $29.50, the cost price of the Buit having been $11.75.
The sale of a suit costing $23.25 to
a millionaire for $60.
The maximum penalty which might
have been imposed in the Weed's
case was $40,000 and a two-year prison
term for Gurdon II. Smith, the general
. manager, who was convicted on a conspiracy charge in the first count In the indictment.
